    Black Oxygen

    Angela Russell is a Black woman who loves Wisconsin. That said, with so few Black folks in the state, sometimes she needs a little extra dose of Black oxygen. A place where she can breathe, connect, restore by hearing and listening deeply to Black folks in this shared journey of life. This podcast will feature and highlight the Black voices in Wisconsin and a little beyond. We hope that these conversations will lift your spirits and give you a few moments to breathe.     Jessi Evans Kendall: Nursing needs you Nov 07, 2022

    Born and raised in Madison, WI, Jessi Evans Kendall is a bedside nurse and a diversity and cultural congruence resource nurse at UW Health. Earlier this year, Jessi was named as one of Madison's top nurses and received the Top Nurses 2022 Leadership Award from Madison Magazine. Of her path towards nursing she says, "I didn't originally think of myself as someone who could help others … I thought of myself as someone who needed help." In this episode of Black Oxygen, Jessi talks about growing up in Madison, her experiences with depression, and the importance of Black nurses for patients and the health care system.

    Ja'Malik: Art should make you feel something Oct 31, 2022

    Ja'Malik says, "I don't remember dance ever not being a part of my life." From being inspired by Michael Jackson's Thriller to being moved by Ulysses Dove's Urban Folk Dance performed by the Alvin Ailey Dance Theater, Ja'Malik knew as a child that he wanted to become a dancer and choreographer. As the new Artistic Director of the Madison Ballet he is one of three Black people in the US that runs a ballet company not founded a Black person. In this episode of Black Oxygen, Ja'Malik discusses his journey to Wisconsin, honesty and truth in dance and in the US, and the role of dance in resilience and joy.

    Hezouwe Walada: Never Give Up Oct 24, 2022

    As a child growing up in a rural village in Togo, Hezouwe Walada saw the impact of malaria on his community. In seeing the death of many close to him, Hezouwe decided to become a doctor. In this episode of Black Oxygen, Hezouwe describes his journey from Togo to Madison and the path towards becoming a physician. He describes how he's the first in his village to attend school, go to college and to go abroad. Hezouwe talks about moving from experiencing homelessness when he first arrived in Madison to how Madison College and UW-Madison's Odyssey program help him not give up his dreams of becoming a physician. He is currently a senior at UW-Madison majoring in biochemistry and getting a certificate in global health studies. Of his journey he says, "I don't just want to be a doctor, I want to be someone that my community looks up to."

    Dr. Takiyah Ball is a Food Safety Microbiologist at Sargento Foods based in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin.
