Welcome to SEASON THREE of the Black Girl Theology podcast!

If you have been an avid listener of the pod, then you have definitely heard that before. Technically, I released episode one of season three back in May 2024 and then never recorded another episode.

So, we’re back…

As I have been prepping for coming back to the podcast, I felt like the Lord wanted me to push the topic of roadblock debates to a later season and instead focus on something else for season three.

And that is…SURRENDER!

This has been a huge area of growth and discomfort for me over the past year, so I am going to take some time to talk through that today and what it looks like for us to surrender to God.

This week’s Black Girl Theologian is Dr. Sarita Lyons.

Dr. Sarita is a wife, mother, speaker, Bible teacher, and psychotherapist. Dr. Sarita speaks, writes, and advocates about the intersections of faith, mental health, and justice; as well as women’s issues in and outside of the church.

Dr. Sarita released her first book in 2024 titled, “Church Girl: A Gospel Vision to Encourage and Challenge Black Christian Women,” and has been named a USA Today National Bestseller.

Dr. Sarita is passionate about the emotional and spiritual health of the Church, making disciples, and developing leaders. She deeply cares about the Church being stabilized in Christ amidst the changing tides and influence of culture.

In this season of the Black Girl Theology podcast, we talked all about transitions and how hard, heartbreaking, and healing they can be.

In today’s episode, I wanted to lean into what Mo Brooks touched on at the end of episode five. At the end of that episode, I asked him what advice he had for someone who was struggling to receive God’s love or was feeling unworthy of it. He encouraged us to do three things:

1. Be with Jesus

2. Become like Jesus

3. Do what Jesus did

This week’s Black Girl Theologian is Yolanda M. Solomon.

Yolanda is the Director of Discipleship at Epiphany Church in Brooklyn, New York where she teaches and creates discipleship curriculum and resources. Yolanda has also worked in campus ministry at Columbia University in New York where she was blessed to serve undergraduate students for eight years.

Yolanda is the author of Discipleship As Holy Collaboration: Helping Others Follow Jesus in Real Life which will be released in May 2024.

Yolanda is a disciple of Christ, a Brooklyn native and a lifelong Knicks fan which richly fuels her prayer life. She lives in Brooklyn, NY with her family.

In today’s episode, we are talking with my friend, Morgan Makail, about RELATIONSHIP TRANSITIONS and what she learned when God revealed her husband and then told her to move 1,000 miles away.

Morgan Makail, also known as, The Faith Coach, is a Jesus lover, author, speaker, and faith-based entrepreneur, who helps millennial women walk boldly in their faith. She holds a Bachelor’s degree from Eastern Michigan University (EMU) and a Master’s degree from Baylor University in Clinical Social Work. While at EMU Morgan founded WarriHERs, a Christian women’s organization turned membership community, that helps sustain women on the path of righteousness.

Morgan’s goal is to impact all generations of women to step boldly into who God has called them to be, walk confidently in their purpose, and not let fear hold them back from the promises of God.

Toni is a speaker, host of the Still Coloring podcast, and author of two books: Brave Enough to be Broken, and a children’s book, Broken Crayons Still Color. Toni is teaching people all over the globe that you can be broken and still worthy, or feel unqualified and still be called to do great things.

She is a sought after international speaker, leadership coach and consultant with more than 20 years of leadership experience.

She is the author of several books including Voices of Lament; Journey to Freedom (Exodus Bible study); A Sojourner’s Truth; Hope for Us: Knowing God through the Nicene Creed Bible study; and Mentor for Life. She started her blog in 2010, A Sista’s Journey, where she writes about being a servant in God’s kingdom with a focus on leadership, mentoring, reconciliation, and biblical justice.

Welcome back to another episode of the Black Girl Theology podcast. In this season, we have been talking about the basic fundamental principles of Christianity and theology. In the next season, we are going to talk about what it’s like going through seasons of transition, and how hard, heartbreaking, and healing that can be. I’ll be bringing on a few of my favorite Black girls to discuss how transition has been showing up in their lives as well.

But, in today’s episode we are going to be talking about spiritual disciplines. Up until this point, we have discussed the Bible and how it came to be. In the last episode, we talked about salvation and the process of sanctification and justification. And in that episode, we described sanctification as the process by which Christians are set apart for God from the rest of the world, or the process by which Christians are made holy (this is otherwise known as spiritual maturity and it happens over the lifetime of a Christian).

The only way for us to grow in maturity over our lifetime is to continue in our spiritual disciplines. So we’re going to dive into what those are today.

This week’s BGT is Jackie Hill Perry. Jackie is a Bible teacher, writer, and artist. She is the author of Gay Girl, Good God: The Story of Who I Was, and Who God Has Always Been; Holier Than Thou: How God’s Holiness Helps Us Trust Him; and Upon Waking: 60 Daily Reflections to Discover Ourselves and the God We Were Mae For. She is the wife to Preston Perry, with whom she cohosts the podcast, Thirty Minutes with the Perrys. Jackie is also the mommy to Eden, Autumn, Sage, and August.

This week’s BGT is Yana Jenay. Through teaching, writing, and disciplemaking, Yana desires to curate content that will help others think well and exchange a secular worldview for a biblical one. She has done this through a blog series called The Miseducation of Music, providing theological training and consultation on race and unity to churches and organizations, and walking alongside women through anxiety, depression, and harmful patterns of sin.

You can also find her writings on platforms, such as Gospel-Centered Discipleship and The Jude 3 Project. She also wrote The Jude 3 Project’s black apologetic’s curriculum, Through the Eyes of Color.

Yana is also the host of a podcast that I really enjoy, “Living Single with Yana Jenay”. This podcast is all about singleness. Not dating or how to prepare yourself for marriage but how to LIVE single. Though the culture (church culture included) has convinced us that marriage and romantic love is the pinnacle of life, in this podcast, Yana Jenay shares how her faith in Christ has caused her to embrace a new narrative. Her hope is to move the conversation about singleness past contentment to celebration and create a movement of #notthirsty singles.

With a clear passion for Bible Literacy, Jennifer founded a gathering called “SoulCircles” which equips women to study the Bible inductively not just for information but for transformation. These events occur all over the country in restaurants, coffee houses, and now have a budding virtual community. In 2020, Jennifer founded Mission Consulting Hub which is comprised of a group of BIPOC women creatives who are on a mission to “serve the servant-leader” through VA services, copywriting, social media management, and more.
