Nehemiah Overview + 1: A Man of Purpose Who Pondered and Prayed Oct 20, 2025
    Show notes

How do you react when you hear devastating news of people suffering?

In this Nehemiah 1 Bible study, Nehemiah receives word that Jerusalem's walls are broken and its gates are burned. He immediately perceives the problem: the city of Jerusalem is at risk of attack, the people may be taken captive, and the Temple destroyed.

Instead of brushing past the pain, he weeps and ponders what should be done. He considers if he, as cupbearer to the king, might do it. Then, rather than rushing into reckless action, he fasts and offers one of the most powerful prayers in Scripture. In the end, Nehemiah decides to answer the call if God opens the door.

In our Nehemiah 1 Bible study, we cover:

    • [11:30] Identity and Calling: why Nehemiah only needs 13 words to show he’s qualified for this calling, and how God qualifies us for our unique calling too.
    • [16:23] Perception and Passion: why Nehemiah's tears aren’t a moment of weakness. They’re a sign of his passion and the key turning point in the entire story.
    • [18:54] Pondering Before Planning: how sitting with hard news, instead of rushing to fix it, can actually be the most productive thing you do, and why it sets Nehemiah up for ultimate success.
    • [20:09] Prayer as a First Step, Not a Last Resort: the simple four-part structure Nehemiah uses when praying before he takes action.
    • [23:59] Finding Favor: the surprising thread connecting Nehemiah to Noah, Moses, Esther, and Mary.

Group Discussion Questions for Nehemiah 1

    1. [17:26] Nehemiah didn't rush past the pain of his people. He paused to feel it and take it to God. When hard news moves your heart, do you tend to shut it out, rush to fix it, or take it to prayer?
    2. [20:32] Nehemiah praised, confessed, and gave thanks before asking God for anything. What do you think might change in your heart or perspective if you prayed in that order?
    3. [27:13] After perceiving, pondering, and praying, Nehemiah accepts he may be called to help. How can you take time this week to perceive what suffering moves your heart the most, ponder your current role in life (work, home, community), and pray about how God might be calling you to help?

Ezra 9-10: When Obedience Brings Heartbreak Oct 13, 2025
    Show notes

Have you ever felt the need to be healed from the inside out?

In Ezra 9-10, everything is going according to plan until one day Ezra uncovers a shocking truth that threatens Israel’s spiritual future. It’s a moment of sheer devastation that leaves Ezra pulling out his hair, sitting in complete agony, and mourning over a broken community.

What follows is a perplexing and emotionally heavy ending to the Book of Ezra, which highlights why external rules can never truly change our hearts. We need a Savior who can heal our hearts from the inside out.

In our Ezra 9-10 Bible study, we cover:

    • [2:38] Devastating Discoveries: Why marrying into idolatrous nations puts the Israelites back on the path toward spiritual exile.
    • [3:23] Intercession over Indignation: Why Ezra reacted with visceral grief rather than harsh judgment.
    • [13:32] A Heartbreaking Decision: The painful choices the community makes to turn away from sin and protect their covenant with God.
    • [26:52] Two Contrasting Processions: How the joyful march into Jerusalem at the start of the book contrasts with the heavy procession at the end.
    • [28:01] The Limits of the Law: Why external rules fail and how this points forward to the New Covenant.

Group Discussion Questions for Ezra Chapters 9-10

    1. [9:13] God's hesed shows us His deep, enduring love and favor for a people who keep messing up. When has God offered you another chance in a big or even a small way when you least deserved it?
    2. [28:01] Ezra and his community are trying to heal their struggling hearts with an external solution when what they really need is an internal solution. A Savior to heal them from the inside out. Where in your own life are you tempted to fix heartbreak with an external solution rather than first surrendering it to God?
    3. [29:03] The Book of Ezra ends on a heavy, perplexing note rather than a neat bow, reminding us that God's story isn’t finished yet. Have you ever stepped out in obedience only to have the end result feel like a failure? How might it change the way you see that "failure" if you remember the story isn't finished yet?

Ezra 7-8: Ezra Arrives with a Resume Oct 06, 2025
    Show notes

How do you trust God when the road ahead feels uncertain or risky?

In Ezra 7-8, armed with an impressive ancestral resume and an undeniable love for God's Law, Ezra steps up to lead the second wave of returning exiles back to Jerusalem to rebuild their faith.

God clears their path in miraculous ways, moving the heart of King Artaxerxes to grant Ezra unprecedented authority, royal treasures, and special tax exemptions. Yet Ezra still experiences real human moments of uncertainty, offering us a realistic map for trusting God even when the road ahead feels risky.

In our Ezra 7–8 Bible study, we cover:

    • [2:38] The Missing Cloud: Why the Second Temple felt strangely incomplete even after construction wrapped up.
    • [12:30] Setting Your Heart: How Ezra’s simple approach to knowing, practicing, and teaching God’s Word offers a clear roadmap for our own spiritual growth.
    • [16:55] An Unlikely Ally: Why King Artaxerxes hands Ezra total authority and unlimited royal funding.
    • [25:04] The Missing Levites: Why Ezra halts the entire journey after realizing key worship leaders are missing from the caravan.
    • [26:10] Fasting Over Forces: How Ezra puts his trust into action by praying for safe passage instead of asking the king for a military guard.

Group Discussion Questions for Ezra 7–8

    1. [12:03] Ezra "set his heart" on studying, practicing, and teaching God’s Word. The sequence matters: know it, practice it, teach it. Where are you in this sequence, and what might the next step look like for you?
    2. [25:11] When Ezra realizes the Levites are missing, he pauses the entire trip because they are essential for leading worship. Looking at your current season of life, what is one spiritual "essential" (like rest, community, prayer, or worship) you need to make sure you don't leave behind?
    3. [26:10] Ezra felt embarrassed to ask the King of Persia for a military escort because he had already boasted about God’s protection. Can you relate to that human moment of wanting to rely on earthly "security blankets" instead of stepping out in faith? How do you discern when to ask for human help versus when to simply trust God to pave the way?

Ezra 5-6: Darius' Decree Flips the Script Sep 29, 2025
    Show notes

Have you ever started strong, then hit overwhelming opposition that stopped you in your tracks?

As our Ezra 5-6 Bible study opens, the Temple rebuilding project in Jerusalem has been stalled for 16 years. God raises up two bold prophets, Haggai and Zechariah, who stir the hearts of the people into action.

But as soon as they pick up their tools, the local governor Tattenai demands to see their building permits. What follows is an absolute miracle showcasing God's powerful ability to transform the opposition in our lives into a source of abundant provision.

In our Ezra 5-6 Bible study, we cover:

    • [2:58] Prophetic Encouragement: How Haggai and Zechariah break the silence and rally the people.
    • [8:12] Fair-Minded Opponents: Why Tattenai’s questions trigger a search for the truth.
    • [13:58] A Flipped Script: Why King Darius demands that the opposition fully fund the Temple rebuild.
    • [15:18] Providential Opposition: How life’s obstacles refine and build us into stronger temples for God's glory.
    • [20:34] Restored Redemption: How finishing the Temple in time for Passover connects back to the Exodus and forward to Jesus.

Ezra 3-4: Opposition Arises and Discouragement Descends Sep 22, 2025
    Show notes

How do you handle opposition when you're trying to rebuild your life and faith?

In Ezra 3-4, the returned exiles finally lay the foundation for the new Temple, only to hit an immediate wall of discouragement, political backstabbing, and intimidation.

It’s a situation that feels all too familiar for anyone taking a step forward in their spiritual journey. When we try to draw closer to God, the enemy won't just sit back and watch.

In our Ezra 3–4 Bible study, we cover:

    • [2:51] The Priority of the Altar: Why the exiles build the altar first and how it points directly to Jesus as our ultimate sacrifice.
    • [10:29] Bittersweet Celebrations: Why the younger generation shouts for joy when the new foundation is complete, while the older generation weeps.
    • [12:21] The New Testament Temple: What Paul teaches about our temple today and how we can evaluate and rebuild it.
    • [18:08] Spotting Fake Allies: Why Zerubbabel and Joshua reject the Samaritans' offer to "help," and how the enemies respond.
    • [19:23] Tactics of the Enemy: Four common ways the opposition tries to derail our faith, from subtle lies to outright intimidation.

    2. [19:55] The enemy tempts us to compromise our morals, goals, and faith by introducing subtle doubts, as he did with Eve, "Did God really say…?" In what areas of your life have you felt tempted to compromise a belief or your work for the Lord?

Ezra 1-2: God Moves, Cyrus Speaks, and the People Pack Sep 15, 2025
    Show notes

Have you ever felt God stir your heart to take action? The Israelites can relate!

As we kick off our Ezra Bible study, after 70 years in captivity, God is stirring the hearts of a generation raised on stories of the Promised Land. He's calling them back to Jerusalem, a difficult 900-mile walk, to rebuild a Temple they’ve never even seen before.

In Ezra 1-2, we hear the true story of how God moves the heart of a Persian king to send His people home. It’s an exodus foretold by Jeremiah and prophesied by Isaiah, down to the very name of the king 150 years before his birth!

In our Ezra 1–2 Bible study, we cover:

    • [7:12] A Pattern Worth Knowing: In the Israelites’ perpetual cycle of hope and disappointment, why God provides the hope, and the people provide the disappointment.
    • [8:19] Imperfect Leaders: Why even the best leaders in Ezra and Nehemiah can't finish what they started, and how that reveals our need for a Messiah.
    • [17:55] The Hand of God: How God moves quietly through non-believing world leaders to orchestrate freedom and provide resources for His people, and why He still moves mountains today through ordinary decisions and willing hearts.
    • [21:53] The Second Exodus: How God makes it possible for a generation born in captivity to pack up their lives and walk 900 miles back to a home they’ve never seen.
    • [30:35] A List of Who’s Who: Why Ezra's meticulous roll call of returning families matters more than you'd think, including one name carrying the literal bloodline of Jesus.

2 Chronicles 35-36: From Exile to Hope Sep 08, 2025

Why does God allow hard times?

As we wrap up our 2 Chronicles Bible study, King Josiah pulls off the biggest Passover celebration in centuries. Then he makes a questionable split-second decision that ends his life. After that, Judah spirals through puppet kings, foreign invasions, and tragic missteps.

Yet even in exile, God leaves a trail of hope, preserving the line of David. And He works through a pagan king to set His people free, reminding us He never stops calling us back.

In our 2 Chronicles 35-36 Bible study, we cover:

    • [3:38] Royal Generosity: Why Josiah is so generous, throwing the best Passover celebration they've had in over 400 years.
    • [10:14] Disguises and Blind Spots: How Josiah repeats Ahab’s mistake, and why it reminds us God's will cannot be thwarted.
    • [17:49] Wake-Up Calls: Why God allowed kings to be carried off to Egypt and Babylon.
    • [20:19] Preserving the Promise: How God protects the Davidic lineage so the family tree of Jesus remains intact.

2 Chronicles 24-28: The Missed Opportunity for Relational Restoration Aug 18, 2025
    Show notes

Do you have the humility it takes for relational restoration?

We've all experienced the painful ripple effects of broken relationships, whether with friends, family, coworkers, or God. In our 2 Chronicles 24-28 Old Testament Bible study, we walk through the wild saga of five consecutive kings of Judah: Joash, Amaziah, Uzziah, Jotham, and Ahaz.

Their stories read like a high-stakes drama full of great starts, massive ego trips, and missed opportunities for restoration. See how easily misplaced trust and sneaky pride can derail restoration and how our compassionate God continually sends warnings, second chances, and open doors for healing.

In our 2 Chronicles 24-28 Bible study, we cover:

    • [5:30] Joash's Tragic Turnaround: Why a king who started out so faithful ends up killing the son of the faithful family who saved him.
    • [13:42] Amaziah's Pride Trap: How failing to recognize God’s hand in our victories can lead us to pride that ultimately ruins us.
    • [22:31] Uzziah's Overconfidence: Why pride makes it difficult to see past ourselves and recognize the truth that’s right in front of us.
    • [24:46] Jotham's Lukewarm Leadership: What happens when we live out a personal faith but completely fail to influence or guide the people around us.
    • [31:40] Ahaz's Collapse: Why even when one generation literally shuts and locks the door to God, there is always hope for the future.
