Job 1-3: The Devastation of Job Mar 09, 2026
    Show notes

Why does God allow suffering to get worse even when you're doing everything right?

In Job 1-3, the losses pile up fast for Job. Then Satan unleashes physical suffering so severe that Job's own friends don't recognize him when they arrive. They sit in stunned silence for seven days.

Job's wife, broken by her own grief, urges Job to curse God and die. Then, in Chapter 3, Job who has worshipped God through catastrophe, opens his mouth and wishes he had never been born.

In our Job 1-3 Bible study, we cover:

    • [8:14] Satan's Strategy: Why Satan escalates from attacking Job's possessions to attacking his body, and what the phrase "skin for skin" actually means.
    • [10:25] Suffering's Two Sides: How suffering can be both the absence of everything good or the presence of everything bad.
    • [12:18] Job's Wife: Why her shocking outburst isn't villainous. It's deeply human, and the Accuser knows exactly how to use it.
    • [16:09] What Real Comfort Looks Like: What Job's three friends do right before they get everything wrong, and what it teaches us about showing up for suffering people.
    • [19:22] Job's Darkest Words: Why Job cursing the day he was born isn't a loss of faith, and what it reveals about honest grief before God.

Group Discussion Questions for Job 1-3

    1. [4:04] Job worshipped God in the middle of devastating loss. When you are suffering, do you find it difficult or empowering to respond like Job?
    2. [13:24] Job teaches us that when we encounter trials, we shouldn't ask, “How can I get out of this?” Instead, we can ask, “What can I get out of this?” Is there a current trial in your life that God might be inviting you to think about in this new way?
    3. [16:13] Job’s friends sat in silence for seven days, just present with him in his pain. Who in your life right now needs you simply to sit with them rather than offer answers?

Job Overview + 1 Job, the Righteous Target Mar 02, 2026
    Show notes

Why does God allow innocent people to suffer, and can we trust Him when life falls apart?

In our Job 1 commentary, we dive into one of the Bible's most honest, raw, and misunderstood books and watch God allow a blameless, upright man's world to be shattered.

But Job isn't just an ancient story about suffering. It's God's answer to every question about suffering we've been afraid to ask.

In this Job Bible study, we cover:

    • [3:35] The Wisdom Books: Why Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Solomon exist as a sudden shift from history to the human condition.
    • [14:33] Job's Character: What "blameless and upright" actually means and why it makes Job a target.
    • [18:14] The Divine Council: Who the "sons of God" are and what Satan's role reveals about spiritual warfare.
    • [24:15] Satan: How the Bible's understanding of "the accuser" evolves from Job all the way through Revelation.
    • [28:49] The Final Verdict: How Jesus closed the case Satan opened in Job 1... for good.

Group Discussion Questions for Job 1

Whether you're studying with a group or solo, Job 1 raises questions worth pondering to help you move from information to reflection. If you're listening together, pause at the suggested timestamps to discuss.

    1. [10:41] The Retribution Principle says good people prosper and bad people suffer. Have you ever subconsciously believed this? How has your own experience of suffering (or someone else's) challenged that belief?
    2. [14:33] Job is described as conscientious and upright, yet he becomes the target of a test. Have you ever felt that doing the right thing made things harder for you rather than easier? What did that season teach you?
    3. [30:50] When life doesn't make sense and you're in a season of grief, confusion, or doubt, what has your default response been: to question God or to trust Him? What has helped you move toward trust?

Esther 9-10: The Great Reversal, From Fasting to Feasting Feb 23, 2026
    Show notes

Have you ever faced an upcoming date on the calendar with growing dread?

That’s exactly how the entire Persian Empire feels in Esther 9-10 as the thirteenth of Adar approaches, when two opposing edicts will have a massive showdown. The day arrives, and the Jews, once marked for total annihilation, turn the tables on their enemies, because for the first time in the entire Book of Esther, everyone fears them.

Before the dust settles, Esther boldly requests another day of battle and the brutal destruction of Haman’s family. Then this woman, who once hid her identity to survive, signs her name as a Jew and establishes Purim, a religious holiday which still exists today to celebrate when the Jews' sorrow turned to joy.

In our Esther 9-10 Bible study, we cover:

    • [4:15] Ancient Roots: How this final battle connects all the way back to what God commanded ‌Saul to do centuries earlier in 1 Samuel.
    • [14:30] Esther's Boldness: Why Esther asks the king for more instead of walking away once the immediate danger passes.
    • [17:34] Divine Providence: Why a story that never mentions God is such a great example of how God’s divine providence is always at work behind the scenes.
    • [21:01] Justice and Irony: How the lot Haman cast to destroy the Jews becomes the name of their salvation, Purim.
    • [21:57] Purim Traditions: How the four simple requirements (Mitzvot) of Purim celebrate that the Jews' sorrow turned into joy, and why Purim still matters today.

Group Discussion Questions for Esther 9-10

    1. [15:14] Esther is gruesomely thorough because there’s no way she’s going to look back with regret. Is there a God-given assignment in your life right now that you've been holding back from finishing? What would it look like to see it through to the end?
    2. [25:30] Divine providence is God working behind the scenes through what looks like a series of coincidences. When was the last time you experienced a coincidence in your life, and do you think it might have actually been the hand of God?
    3. [28:22] The Book of Esther began with Esther hiding her identity, and it ended with her name publicly on a royal decree. Have you ever witnessed God transform the very thing someone was most afraid to be known for into the source of their greatest impact? What was the result?

Esther 8: Mordecai’s Rise: From Condemned to Crowned Feb 16, 2026
    Show notes

Have you ever removed a toxic person from your life, then found yourself dealing with the wreckage they left behind?

That's the mess they're all in as our Esther 8 Bible study opens. Haman is gone, impaled on his own gallows. But Persian law says a king's edict can never be reversed, not even by the king himself. So the death warrant marked for every Jew in the empire is still ticking, and something has to give, but it won't be the law.

What follows is one of the most satisfying reversals of fortune and power in the Bible. Then Esther marches back into the throne room, no banquets or mystery this time, just a brilliantly worded, passionate request for her people's lives. What she gets isn't exactly a "yes," but it will save her people because it gives them permission to fight back.

In our Esther 8 Bible study, we cover:

    • [2:34] The Great Reversal: Why the king hands all of Haman’s fortune to Esther and all of his power to Mordecai.
    • [6:37] The Artful Ask: Why Esther's four "if" statements are a brilliant diplomatic strategy to inspire the selfish king to do the right thing.
    • [8:54] A Legal Loophole: How a second decree transforms genocide into a legal war both sides can fight.
    • [13:27] God's Version of Rescue: Why God so often equips us for the battle instead of removing it altogether.
    • [18:51] Inspirational Intercession: What Esther has in common with Moses and David, and why all three point forward to Jesus, our permanent intercessor.

Group Discussion Questions for Esther 8:

    1. [4:54] In previous chapters, Esther fasted and waited before calmly approaching the king with her request. In this episode, she gets straight to the point with passionate diplomacy. In both cases, Esther does what she can, and it's enough. What situation in your life right now might God be calling you to take action in, within your current limits?
    2. [13:27] Although the murderous decree continues, the Jews now have permission to defend themselves. God doesn't always remove the opposition, but He does promise to be with us and equip us for battle. What trial or battle in your own life can you look back on and see how God was equipping and preparing you for it in advance?
    3. [22:35] Moses, David, and Esther were each willing to give up their lives for their people. Who in your life needs you to intercede on their behalf, even when it's inconvenient or costly?

Esther 6 - 7: The Masks Come Off: Esther, Haman, and Xeres Are All Exposed Feb 09, 2026
    Show notes

What if one sleepless night changed your entire life story?

Esther 6-7 is the fastest, most ironic reversal in the Old Testament. Our villain, Haman, expects to spend his day publicly humiliating and murdering his sworn enemy, Mordecai. Instead, King Xerxes’ God-induced insomnia leads to a discovery that changes everything. Through a hilarious misunderstanding, Haman is forced to publicly honor the very man he planned to hang on a 75-foot gallows.

Then, the tension explodes at Esther’s second banquet. The masks come off and our brave queen brilliantly exposes Haman as the villain, reveals her own identity, and begs for the life of her people. God’s hidden providence rings loud and clear with every intricate detail as Haman goes from the king's favorite advisor to a corpse on display in less than 24 hours.

In our Esther 6-7 Bible study, we cover:

    • [11:36] The Power of Insomnia: How an ordinary sleepless night becomes God's ultimate tool to protect His people, and how to trust Him in your own unresolved situations.
    • [16:12] Courageous Communication: How Esther’s carefully worded petition exposes Haman without cornering the volatile king, and what her example teaches us about speaking hard truths with wisdom instead of blame.
    • [26:32] Pride Before the Fall: Why Haman's desperate need to be honored becomes the exact trap that destroys him.
    • [22:37] Irony in Scripture: How the man who plotted genocide against the Jews ends up begging on his knees before a Jewish woman, then hangs on the gallows he built for his enemy.
    • [10:07] Missed Second Chances: The sobering warning from Haman's wife, and what it costs us when we refuse to repent.

Group Discussion Questions for Esther 6-7

    1. [26:03] The king's insomnia is the hidden hand of God moving to save His people. How has God used sleepless nights, unexpected conversations, or coincidences to lead you?
    2. [12:57] Paul prayed that God would do "immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine." What would change in your life if you prayed that prayer and truly believed it?
    3. [10:07] Haman ignored his wife's warning and refused to repent. Have you ever been like his wife, the one issuing the warning, or like Haman, the one ignoring it? Why do you think we must hit rock bottom to see the truth and repent sometimes?

    Esther 5: Esther’s High Stakes Invitation Feb 02, 2026
    Show notes

Have you ever made a big decision based on faith alone?

Esther 5 is the turning point when three days of fasting finally meet the moment of truth. Queen Esther risks her life, stepping into the king's court uninvited. Instead of demanding justice, she mysteriously invites King Xerxes and Haman to a banquet.

Haman’s pride soars, convincing him he's reached the pinnacle of power, until one man's refusal to bow sends Haman spiraling into a rage. He’s comforted by his wife’s suggestion to murder and begins constructing a lethal 75-foot execution stake for Mordecai. Little does he know, he's building his own grave.

In our Esther 5 Bible study, we cover:

    • [4:32] Divine Timing: Why Esther's choice of "the third day" isn't a random detail but part of a pattern that runs through Jonah, Joseph, Hezekiah, and the resurrection itself.
    • [6:52] The Power of Stillness: How Esther's two mysterious banquets may be the fruit of prayerful waiting rather than a calculated plan, and why our culture's addiction to instant answers can keep us from recognizing what God is doing behind the scenes.
    • [10:36] Historic Finds: What archaeological finds from Persepolis reveal about the real-life scepter protocol, and why it confirms just how much Esther risked by walking into that throne room.
    • [11:27] One Story, Two Kings: King Xerxes' offer of "up to half the kingdom" echoes centuries later in Herod's fatal promise to Salome, highlighting how different the two outcomes are: one saving a nation, the other the murder of a holy man, and why the position of our heart matters when we answer important questions.
    • [13:55] Pride Before the Fall: How Haman's obsession with one man's disrespect exposes the emptiness of status, and why "when pride comes, then comes disgrace" is a warning worth taking personally.
    • [15:47] A Hidden Chiasm: How the banquets in Esther form a hidden chiastic structure with God's reversal sitting right at the center, and why that reveals God’s intricate fingerprint, even in a story that doesn’t mention Him.

Group Discussion Questions for Esther 5

    1. [8:55] Esther waited three days in prayer and fasting before making her move. In your own life, when has God asked you to wait instead of act? Did you choose to wait or not, and how did that impact the outcome?
    2. [13:12] The invitation to Esther's banquet feeds Haman's pride, and Mordecai’s disrespect shatters his peace. What's one area of your life where you might unintentionally let other people’s opinions inflate your pride or destroy your peace? How does Haman's story help you recognize how dangers that can be?
    3. [14:52] At the first banquet, Esther doesn’t ask for what she needs. Instead, she sits in the tension and waits. In difficult situations, do you blurt out what needs to be said or slowly build up to it like Esther? How do you think that might change if you followed God’s lead?

Esther 4: For Such a Time As This Jan 26, 2026
    Show notes

What does "for such a time as this" actually mean, and why does that phrase still hit so hard thousands of years later?

Esther 4 is the moment everything gets real. Mordecai finds out about Haman's death decree and does something drastic. He rips his clothes, throws on sackcloth and ashes, and wails at the King's Gate. It's loud and public because he needs Esther to know how bad things are.

The time has come for Esther, secluded and safe in the palace, to choose between comfort and calling. Mordecai's challenge to her, "who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this," becomes one of the most quietly powerful lines in all of Scripture. Esther response transforms her from a passive girl in a palace into a woman willing to say, "If I perish, I perish."

In our Esther 4 Bible study, we cover:

    • [4:04] Grief Inspiring Action: Why Mordecai's torn clothes, scratchy sackcloth, and ashes aren’t just drama, and how openly expressing grief can be the first step in moving the right people to take vital steps to save others.
    • [9:17] God’s Unexpected Messengers: How one overlooked servant, Hathak, becomes the crucial link between Mordecai and Esther and why that’s proof God inspires ordinary, unnoticed people to move history.
    • [10:15] Impossible Circumstances: Why Mordecai's famous challenge, "who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this," is a challenge for all of us and an invitation to see our “impossible circumstances” through the lens of divine providence, courage, and calling.
    • [14:28] God’s Purpose: Why God’s purpose cannot be moved by man but how we respond will change the course of our life, and a powerful analogy to help us understand how God respects our free will while still accomplishing his purpose.
    • [16:11] Faith Despite Fear: How Esther's transformation from a quiet, controlled queen into a woman of bold strategy shows us what courage actually looks like when the stakes are life and death, and why faithful action doesn’t require the absence of fear.
    • [19:13] The Real Battle: How Esther’s story quietly echoes the prophet Joel's call to repentance and foreshadows Herod's attempt to kill the baby Jesus, revealing one enemy, one target, across centuries.

Group Discussion Questions for Esther 4:

    1. [06:03] Mordecai refuses to be comforted until Esther hears the truth about her true calling. Has God ever refused to give up until you were clear what your calling was? Or do you wish God would be more obvious about your calling?
    2. [06:51] Your circumstances may feel accidental or even the result of your own hard work, but Esther 4 reminds us that God places His people strategically. Like Esther, your influence exists for more than comfort. Esther made the leap from passivity to courage. Is there an area in your life where God is asking you to stop playing it safe and step into your callig for such a time as this?
    3. [13:08] Mordecai argues that if Esther stays silent, God will use someone else. How does the idea that God's plan will move forward with or without you motivate or challenge you?

    Esther 2-3: Haman's Pride Demands Genocide Jan 19, 2026
    Show notes

What happens when hatred meets absolute power and an entire nation becomes the target?

In Esther 3, Mordecai refuses to kneel before Haman, the king's newly promoted right-hand man. That single act of defiance ignites a fury that spreads from one Jew to all of them. Haman doesn't just want Mordecai gone. He wants every Jewish man, woman, and child in the Persian Empire destroyed.

What follows is a masterclass in manipulation. Haman lies to the king, bribes him with a fortune, and walks away with the king's own signet ring and permission to "do with the people as he pleases." A death sentence goes out to all 127 provinces on the same day the Jews should be celebrating Passover. While the empire panics, the king and Haman sit down for a drink.

In our Esther 3 Bible study, we cover:

    • [9:53] Pride and Principle: Why Mordecai's refusal to bow isn't random. It's rooted in an ancient battle between two families.
    • [14:48] Rolling the Dice on Genocide: Haman casts lots to choose the date for the Jews' destruction, never realizing God has already destined that random roll to buy His people 11 months.
    • [17:47] The Price of Hate: Haman offers the king a small fortune to seal the deal, a reminder of how far people will go to justify cruelty.
    • [24:04] Seven Traits God Detests: Haman checks every box in Proverbs 6, making him one of only a couple of biblical characters to embody all seven traits God detests.
    • [26:11] Waking Up to Chaos: Susa is in an uproar while Esther sleeps, unaware her whole world is about to change. Most of us know that feeling of waking up to a crisis we didn't create.

    2. [8:24] The king forgot to reward Mordecai for his loyalty. How do you respond when your faithfulness goes unnoticed or unrewarded by those in authority?
    3. [17:24] Haman manipulated the king by presenting a distorted picture of the Jews. Has anyone ever manipulated the facts about you or a loved one to serve their own purpose? What do you wish others would have done to verify the facts before judging?

Esther 2: From Humble Hadassah to Exalted Esther Jan 12, 2026
    Show notes

What was Esther 2 really about: a fairytale, a beauty pageant, or something much darker than the movies let on?

After Xerxes loses his war with Greece and comes home to an empty throne, his advisors cook up a plan to distract him: a kingdom-wide search for a new queen. It sounds romantic, but it isn't. Hidden in the middle of this "contest" is a scared, orphaned teenager named Hadassah, who is about to be swept into a world that could destroy her.

In this episode we dig into Esther’s forced double life, the buried family history that connects Mordecai to King Saul (and an old enemy named Amalek), and the one phrase "she found favor" that quietly points to God moving behind the scenes when it looks like no one is in control.

In our Esther 2 Bible study, we cover:

    • [9:22] An Old Score That Comes Due: How Mordecai's ancestry ties this story back to King Saul's unfinished business with Amalek and sets up the conflict still to come.
    • [15:12] Holding Onto Our Identity: What Esther's forced double life can teach us about holding onto our identity in seasons when we feel completely out of control.
    • [17:18] The Real Beauty Pageant: Why this "contest" for queen is actually a one-way ticket into isolation for hundreds of young women, and why Mordecai is terrified for Hadassah to be part of it.
    • [20:25] A Girl with Two Names: What the hidden meaning behind the names "Hadassah" and "Esther" reveals about her transformation from frightened orphan to future queen.
    • [30:47] Finding Favor: Why the phrase "she found favor" is the key to understanding that Esther's rise isn’t about her charm. It is about God working when His name is never even mentioned.

Group Discussion Questions for Esther 2:

    1. [15:12] Have you ever experienced the tension of living between two worlds or two identities in your own life, hiding a part of your true self or stepping into a totally different "persona" just to get by? How did it end?
    2. [23:51] Think about a difficult or intimidating season in your past. Did an unlikely ally or an unexpected friend show up to help you get through it? Looking back, can you see God’s hand in that?
    3. [24:51] We can’t judge Vashti for her defiance or Esther for her compliance, because both women were simply trying to navigate a broken, difficult system the best they could. Is there anyone in your life right now you are judging harshly without knowing the whole story? If you consider how God might be working through them to carry out His divine purpose, how might that change your perspective?

Esther Overview + 1: How Divine Providence Moved Queen Vashti to Defiance Jan 05, 2026
    Show notes

What should you do when life feels out of control? Esther 1 has the answer.

With Esther 1, we step into the dazzling, dangerous world of the Persian court. King Xerxes is hosting a series of banquets meant to rally an empire for war. However, a drunken request ends in a moment of royal humiliation nobody saw coming.

Behind it all, what looks like a very public marital spat is actually the raw material God is using to carry out His divine will.

In our Esther 1 Bible study, we cover:

    • [4:32] The Historical Setting of Esther: Susa's palace was real, excavated, and matches the Book of Esther's descriptions so closely that archaeologists believe the author must have seen it firsthand.
    • [12:19] Divine Providence in Action: Why our world can feel chaotic and unpredictable, but Esther 1 reminds us to trust God because He can use even the messiest of situations to carry out His divine plan.
    • [17:56] The Role of Banquets: What the banquets were actually like in the Book of Esther, and how God used them to save His chosen people.
    • [25:32] Queen Vashti's Life: Why Persian queens weren't just decorative. They were economically independent, hosted their own banquets, and wielded real political influence.
    • [28:21] The King's Fatal Mistake: How Xerxes' drunken demand and the panicked advice of his nobles triggered an irreversible Persian law with unanticipated consequences.

Group Discussion Questions for Esther 1:

    1. [9:54] Even though the Book of Esther doesn’t mention God, He is powerfully working behind the scenes. Where in your own life have you spotted (or suspected) the "hidden hand" of God at work, even in messy or ordinary circumstances like a marital spat?
    2. [27:50] Vashti faced a lose-lose situation: comply and risk humiliation, or refuse and risk the king's wrath. When you face the stress of an impossible decision in your own life, how can you intentionally remind yourself that no matter what you choose, God will use it to bless you and others?
    3. [31:17] Xerxes had absolute authority over the largest empire on earth, yet a drunken impulse and a wounded ego set off a chain of events he couldn't control. In our own lives, how can we avoid making fear-based decisions and instead lean into the true wisdom of God?
