    Listener Questions Dec 29, 2025
    Show notes

Do some stories or laws in the Bible have you stumped?

In this special Q&A episode, we tackle your hardest biblical questions from why innocent people face consequences for others' sins to how Jesus' genealogy proves his Davidic lineage through both Mary and Joseph.

We explore controversial Old Testament laws about rape and marriage, unpack the cultural context behind family punishment in ancient Israel, and reveal why Satan appears less frequently in Old Testament books compared to the New Testament. You'll discover surprising answers about Joseph's Egyptian wife, the evil spirit that tormented King Saul, and how to study scripture like a theologian.

    Podcast themes:

    • Context transforms understanding. When we understand the cultural and historical context of difficult biblical passages, God's justice and protection come into clearer focus. So when stories seem harsh or unfair, look at them as an invitation to dive deeper and seek the true nature of God who is just, patient, and intentional from Genesis to Revelation.
    • God's plan leaves no room for doubt. The dual genealogies of Jesus in Matthew and Luke aren't contradictions. They're confirmation. One traces Joseph's legal lineage, the other Mary's biological line, both converging at King David to prove Jesus fulfills messianic prophecy completely.
    • Satan's influence has always existed, even when unnamed. Just because "Satan" isn't mentioned by name frequently in the Old Testament doesn't mean spiritual warfare wasn't happening. The adversary operated throughout biblical history, sometimes through direct attack when God withdrew His protection.

Nehemiah 12-13: Remember Me, My God Dec 22, 2025
    Show notes

What happens when everything you've built starts coming undone?

In Nehemiah 12-13, we reach the dramatic conclusion: a massive praise parade atop Jerusalem's walls. But when Nehemiah returns to Persia, the people quickly fall back into old habits: defiling the Temple, ignoring the Sabbath, and compromising their worship.

In this episode, we unpack the frustrating cycle of hope and human failure and explore how Jesus steps into our brokenness to set us free.

In our Nehemiah 12–13 Bible study, we cover:

    • [2:06] A Praise Parade: How Nehemiah and Ezra lead a marching band atop Jerusalem's walls to celebrate what God has done.
    • [14:40] The Pattern of Failure: Why repeated human failure reveals our deep need for Jesus over self-reliance.
    • [20:56] A Parent on the Warpath: Nehemiah’s reaction when he catches the priest giving his worst enemy a private suite inside the Temple.
    • [29:59] Protecting Faith & Family: How compromised worship and bad influences quickly erode essential spiritual habits.
    • [36:08] Nehemiah's Final Prayer: Why Nehemiah is a powerful model for how to seek God’s approval above everyone else.

Group Discussion Questions for Nehemiah 12-13

    1. [21:11] The people slip into old habits the moment Nehemiah leaves. When life gets busy or chaotic, what's the first spiritual habit (like prayer, quiet time, or rest) that usually slips away from you, and how do you catch yourself?
    2. [26:41] Nehemiah calls Eliashib's decision "the evil thing." When you spot evil in the world, do you ever hesitate to call it out for what it is? Why?
    3. [36:27] Nehemiah prays, "Remember me with favor, my God." He cares more about pleasing God than pleasing the people around him. How hard is it for you to stay focused on God’s approval over everyone else's? What helps you stay focused on God?

Nehemiah 10-11: God Is Committed. What About Us? Dec 15, 2025
    Show notes

What does it really look like to commit your whole life to God, not just your words?

We’ve all been there: full of fresh inspiration and making bold promises to do better. But what happens when the dust settles and sticking to those promises gets tough?

While Nehemiah tackles real-life hurdles like family priorities, honoring the Sabbath, and giving back, he faces another huge issue in Nehemiah 10-11: Jerusalem is a complete ghost town. The city walls are built, but nobody is living inside!

To get the community thriving again, Nehemiah uses a mix of casting lots and calling for brave volunteers to repopulate the city. Through their story, we learn what it takes to shift from empty promises to wholehearted commitment.

In our Nehemiah 10–11 Bible study, we cover:

    • [3:26] The Impossible Promise: Why 84 leaders sign a binding agreement with God that they can't keep, and why we need the Holy Spirit, not just willpower.
    • [9:28] Family, Faith, and Finances: How Ezra and Nehemiah tackle marriage choices, Sabbath distractions, and giving back.
    • [9:44] The Firstborn Connection: The thread linking Exodus traditions, Nehemiah's era, and Mary and Joseph presenting baby Jesus.
    • [14:51] Ghost Town Recovery: How Nehemiah uses drawing lots and eager volunteers to spark an urban revival in Jerusalem.
    • [15:52] Uncomfortable Sacrifices: Why trading suburban comfort for God's calling turns everyday laypeople into biblical heroes.
    • [29:22] Living as Exiles: How our modern lives mirror those of the ancient Israelites as we learn to live out our faith wherever God places us.

    1. [13:52] Nehemiah requires commitments in three areas: family, faith, and finances. What do you think God wants our commitment to marriage, the Sabbath, and supporting the church to look like today?

    2. [15:42] Some families are chosen by lot to sacrifice the comfort of where they live for where God wants them. How would you feel if your family was chosen to give up a comfortable home and move into a city destroyed by war and neglect?

    3. [29:22] The Israelites are described as being much like us: exiles, battling temptation, needing to commit to walking with God. Where do you see the clearest parallel between the Israelites of Nehemiah's day and your own life?

Nehemiah Chapter 9: Lessons on Confession and Renewal Dec 08, 2025
    Show notes

How do I break free from the power of sin when I keep making the same mistakes?

Ever feel like you genuinely want to do the right thing, but you keep slipping up? You’re not alone! From the Israelites in the Old Testament to Paul in the New Testament and Christians today, we all feel it!

So, after finishing the Feast of Tabernacles, the returned exiles in Nehemiah 9 swap out their celebration clothes for scratchy sackcloth, humbling themselves to get real about their mess-ups. They realize that true repentance isn't just feeling bad; it’s turning back to a God who is constantly gracious, merciful, and ready to restore.

In our Nehemiah 9 Bible study, we cover:

    • [6:26] Scratchy Sackcloth: Why the Israelites put on burlap to publicly own their sin and make themselves uncomfortable for the Lord.
    • [9:39] The ACTS Roadmap: How the Levites lead a corporate prayer using Adoration, Confession, Thanks, and Supplication.
    • [11:53] Walk Down Miracle Lane: Remembering God’s massive rescue missions, from Mount Sinai's fire to water out of a rock.
    • [14:18] The Cycle of Mercy: How God continuously shows compassion and grace whenever we turn back to Him, even when it happens over and over again.
    • [23:15] Putting It in Writing: Why the community signs a binding agreement to renew its covenant with God.
    • [25:35] The Covenant Thread: How every promise from Noah to David leads straight to Jesus and the New Covenant written on our hearts.

Group Discussion Questions for Nehemiah 9

    1. [1:54] Paul said he didn't know coveting was wrong until the Law named it. Has there ever been a moment when learning or hearing something new (a sermon, a verse, a friend's honesty) suddenly showed you a "blind spot" in your own faith walk that you hadn't noticed before?
    2. [6:36] The Israelites wore sackcloth to make their outside match their inside. What's one way you personally "sit with" discomfort (guilt, grief, conviction) instead of rushing past it, and do you find that hard or easy to do?
    3. [10:43] The Levites walked through Israel's whole history before ever confessing anything, remembering who God is first. When you're struggling or discouraged, is there a memory or "God moment" from your own life that you return to because it helps you remember how faithful God is?

    Nehemiah 8: Nehemiah's Next Build--The People's Faith Dec 01, 2025
    Show notes

How do you rebuild your faith when you feel distant from God?

In Nehemiah 8, it’s time to rebuild the people’s faith, so Nehemiah calls his friend, Ezra the priest, to read the Book of the Law to the people. What follows is a massive outdoor gathering.

Thousands stand for hours under the hot sun to listen to God’s Word. As they do, they're moved from deep sorrow over how far they’ve strayed to explosive celebration as they realize God’s unfailing love and promises are still theirs.

In our Nehemiah 8 Bible study, we cover:

    • [4:41] The Water Gate Revival: Why they chose the Water Gate as the location for reading God’s Word.
    • [10:13] Pop-Up Small Groups: How the Levites moved through the crowd to help ordinary people understand what was being read.
    • [12:43] The Joy Reset: Why Nehemiah told a weeping crowd to stop grieving and go throw a party.
    • [13:35] The Threefold Response: How engaging with God's Word triggers deep worship, honest conviction, and uncontrollable joy.
    • [15:55] Camping for the Lord: How rediscovering the long-lost Feast of Booths turned the whole city into a week-long celebration.
    • [19:36] The Emmaus Connection: How listening to Scripture opens our eyes to Jesus across the entire Bible.

Nehemiah 6-7: The Wall Is Finished But Nehemiah's Work Isn't Nov 24, 2025
    Show notes

How do you protect your faith when the opposition never ends?

All 2.5 miles of the Jerusalem wall have been rebuilt in just 52 days! You’d think Nehemiah could finally take a break, but the opposition doesn't just pack up and go home when you hit your goal.

Rebuilding the wall was only the first step. Learning how to guard what God rebuilt is where the daily work begins. In this Nehemiah 6–7 Bible study, we explore how Nehemiah handled subtle political pressure and tricky family relationships and why we still need to guard the gates of our hearts against opposition today.

In our Nehemiah 6-7 Bible study, we cover:

    • [7:27] The Opposition Roller Coaster: How to ride out life's constant ups and downs with your hands in the air, praising God, instead of gripping the safety bar in sheer terror.
    • [10:13] Modern FOMO & Ancient Sacrifice: Why every step of obedience we take, big or small, matters to God.
    • [11:53] Integrity Over Influence: Why Nehemiah picks trusted men to keep watch over the city when noble politics get messy.
    • [13:40] Guarding Your Gates: What the gates of our heart are today and why they need guarding.
    • [21:37] The Mysterious Urim and Thummim: A fascinating look at how ancient priests sought God's clear direction when family records and answers were missing.

    1. [10:11] What will your testimony be? Nehemiah gave up the perks of the palace for the problems of his people. Is God asking you to give up your comfort zone for a higher purpose?
    2. [11:56] Nehemiah designates people he trusts to guard the gates of Jerusalem. Today, our eyes and ears are the gates that must be guarded, because they are the entry points for influences, ideas, and temptations that can take root in our hearts. Who is a trusted friend you can invite to keep watch with you? How might God be asking you to be that same protective presence for someone else?
    3. [13:40] If we don’t guard the gates of our hearts (our eyes and ears), we are more vulnerable to spiritual attack. What threatens the gates of your heart today, and what's one step you can take this week to better guard your heart?

Nehemiah 5-6: 4 Types of Opposition that Will Kill Your Credibility Nov 17, 2025
    Show notes

How do you handle toxic drama and personal attacks?

In Nehemiah 5-6, we dive into the sneaky tactics the enemy uses to derail us, from greed to fake invitations, outright lies, and manipulative traps disguised as holy advice.

Instead of reacting out of anger or getting dragged into endless debates, Nehemiah shows us how to pause, take time to ponder, lead by example, and use biblical discernment to spot a setup from a mile away. Through it all, he avoids distracting drama and stays laser-focused on his God-given mission.

In our Nehemiah 5-6 Bible study, we cover:

    • [2:13] Internal Conflict: How greed and fatigue divide us from within, and why pausing to ponder stops messy emotional reactions.
    • [9:54] Leading by Example: Why Nehemiah forfeits his governor privileges and personally funds meals to lighten the people's burden.
    • [13:28] Sneaky Distractions: Why Nehemiah repeatedly refuses to go down to the "plain of Ono" to meet his enemies, and how to spot deceptive invitations designed to pull you away from your calling.
    • [16:31] Slander and Rumors: Why ignoring today’s “unsealed letters” protects your peace and keeps your focus on God.
    • [20:53] Personal Attacks: How knowing God's Word helps you spot toxic spiritual advice, even when it comes from well-meaning friends.
    • [25:01] The 5-P Strategy: How praying, perceiving, pondering, planning, and preparing equips you to overcome modern opposition.

Is it a healthy amount of information and time, or is it causing you to lose trust in humanity? How might you take your eyes off the news and look up in trust to God, the author of truth?
    2. [20:53] Nehemiah knows God’s Word and His Laws, so Shemaiah can't fool him. When people give you advice, what’s one way you can run it through the filter of the Bible to make sure it’s true?

Nehemiah 4: There Was, Is, and Always Will Be Opposition Nov 10, 2025
    Show notes

How do you build a wall of faith when opposition is coming at you from every side?

Have you ever noticed that the second you try to make positive progress in your faith life, a wave of negativity comes out of nowhere to knock you down? You’re not crazy, and you’re definitely not alone. Since ancient times, this has been the opposition’s playbook.

In Nehemiah 4, as the Israelites rebuild the broken walls of Jerusalem, their enemies don't just bring physical threats; they launch a brutal mental and emotional attack. Join us as we unpack Nehemiah’s brilliant reaction and learn how you can use his simple "pray and prepare" strategy to protect your peace, your heart, and your family today.

In our Nehemiah 4 Bible study, we cover:

    • [5:25] The Weapon of Ridicule: How insults are used as a power move to make you feel small, and why reacting in your flesh only derails your work.
    • [8:50] Faith Over Flesh: How Nehemiah resisted the urge to defend himself or fight back, choosing to hand the battle over to God through prayer instead.
    • [10:32] The Purpose of Opposition: Why facing sudden pushback or mockery is actually proof that you are doing something spiritually significant.
    • [12:47] Archaeological Proof: What modern discoveries in Jerusalem reveal about the unbelievable scale and rapid construction of Nehemiah's actual wall.
    • [15:59] Prayer and Preparation: The game-changing balance of trusting God for protection while actively taking smart, practical steps to guard what you are building.
    • [18:50] Radical Agility: How to keep doing God's work with one hand while holding a spiritual weapon in the other to shield your home and family.

    1. [9:29] Nehemiah's flesh could have reacted to ridicule, but his faith redirected him to prayer instead. When you're mocked or dismissed for your faith, do you react in the flesh or respond in faith?
    2. [15:40] The threat from without (the opposition) led to a threat from within for the builders: fatigue, fear, and hopelessness. In your life, when has physical fatigue or fear threatened to keep you from being faithful in your prayer life or service to God? What’s one way you could push back like Nehemiah did with prayers and preparation? (For example, prepare healthier food to give you more energy/health to serve, plan when and where you’ll pray, prepare for better sleep with an improved bedtime routine, etc.)
    3. [17:06] Nehemiah told the people, "Don't be afraid of them... fight for your families, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your homes." What family members or friends are you fighting spiritual opposition for right now?

Nehemiah 3: Every Heart Needs a Wall Nov 03, 2025
    Show notes

Why would God dedicate an entire book of the Bible to building a wall?

We look beyond the brick and mortar to uncover a fierce spiritual battle in this Nehemiah 3 Bible study. Because, without a wall, Jerusalem’s rebuilt Temple is exposed, placing the people's sacred connection with God in constant danger.

Join us as we walk counterclockwise through Jerusalem's ancient gates witnessing an amazing picture of community. We reveal a prophetic mystery of the East Gate that points straight to Jesus and why God’s dwelling place today still needs guarding.

In our Nehemiah 3 Bible study, we cover:

    • [2:12] The True Value of a Wall: Why Nehemiah grieved far more over the people's spiritual vulnerability than their physical safety.
    • [5:34] Modern Gatekeeping: Practical wisdom for guarding where God dwells today and strengthening our spiritual gates and walls.
    • [9:11] Leading by Example: How High Priest Eliashib’s hands-on labor at the Sheep Gate set the tone for the project, and the deep spiritual symbolism of starting this way.
    • [13:17] Solidarity in the Trenches: Why perfumers, goldsmiths, leaders, and daughters all rallied together to rebuild their assigned sections.
    • [20:46] The “East Gate” Bible Bender: Why, throughout Scripture, moving east represents separation from God and how Jesus reversed our direction forever.

Nehemiah 2: Nehemiah Never Panicked–He Prepared and Planned Oct 27, 2025
    Show notes

When facing a massive life crisis, how do you stay calm and prepare a strategy?

Nehemiah 2 shows us a surprising way to handle overwhelming challenges, beginning with prayerful waiting and preparation. For Nehemiah, it takes four months before he finally gets his chance with King Artaxerxes, but when he does, he’s ready!

Then, in Jerusalem, he listens to the people before conducting a covert inspection of Jerusalem’s wall. Through genuine relationships, quiet faith, and thoughtful diplomacy, Nehemiah manages to unify an entire nation. And even in the face of critics like Sanballat and Tobiah, he teaches us how to be wise and stand firm.

In our Nehemiah 2 Bible study, we cover:

    • [3:03] Patient Waiting: How taking four months between hearing bad news and taking action allows Nehemiah to trust God's timing completely.
    • [10:31] Diplomacy and Prayer: How sending up a silent prayer before speaking to an authority figure can open doors for impossible requests.
    • [15:14] Preparation Over Panic: Why thinking through your logistical needs in advance prevents paralysis when sudden opportunities arrive.
    • [17:36] Facing Counterplots: Why pushback from enemies often occurs the moment you step forward in God's work.
    • [21:34] Covert Intel Gathering: Why inspecting Jerusalem’s broken walls at night allowed Nehemiah to separate facts from rumors before launching his plan.
    • [25:35] Persuasive Leadership: How using unifying words like "we" and "us" builds trust and inspires a community to work together.

    1. [3:03] Nehemiah waits four months before his opportunity arises, not in frustration but in confident trust that God will open the door. Is there a situation in your life right now where God may be asking you to wait patiently rather than force an opening?
    2. [4:23] Nehemiah is prepared with the right relationships, the right faithful confidence, and the right diplomacy when his moment comes. Which of those three areas do you feel most needs development in your own life right now in order to be ready to accept God’s call when it comes?
    3. [25:59] When Nehemiah rallies the people, he is inclusive, associative, visionary, and transparent. Think of a situation in your life where you need to bring others on board with a vision, whether it’s at work or simply getting the kids to clean their rooms. How might you apply Nehemiah’s persuasion tools to this situation?
