    Beyond the Scope

    Beyond The Scope, a new podcast by the Digital Pathology Association, focuses on hot topics in digital pathology. Co-hosts Dr. Giovanni Lujan (OSUWMC) and Dr. David Tulman (Instapath) converse with key opinion leaders in an engaging format discussing all of the new research, technology, and workflows emerging in digital pathology. Beyond The Scope aims to cover specific topics ranging from artificial intelligence to computational pathology, whole slide imaging to in/ex-vivo microscopy, regulation and commercialization, and more!     Giovanni and David are joined by Aleksandra Zuraw DVM, a fellow podcaster and founder of www.digitalpathologyplace.com. Dr. Zuraw is a veterinary pathologist working for Charles River Labs CRO on pre-clinical drug discovery studies. Digital Pathology Place is a website featuring a podcast, blog, webinars, and news items related to digital pathology. This episode is the first installment featuring the digital pathology podcasters getting together to discuss hot topics. The result is a general discussion on digital pathology adoption and reactions to the recently published guidelines for validating clinical and pre-clinical digital pathology applications.

    Dr. Lewis Hassell is a pathologist and Director of Anatomic Pathology at The University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. He joins Beyond the Scope to introduce the Open Pathology Education Network (OPEN) and discuss the challenges currently facing the global pathology workforce. OPEN is a platform that aims to provide remote and digital education to pathologists in underserved areas of the world; they recently launched the first pilot programs in Vietnam. Dr. Hassell also shares his insights on how learnings from the COVID 19 pandemic are transforming the way we educate the next generation of pathologists.     David West is a computational biologist, entrepreneur, and co-founder of Proscia. Proscia is a company advancing data-driven pathology with its Concentriq platform and computational solutions. He joins BTS to share his journey with Proscia from University spin-off to their recently closed series C funding round. In the second half of the episode, David discusses the challenges and opportunities of working with big data in pathology. Lastly, David shares his insight into how pathologists should go about selecting software tools to meet their needs.

    Dr. Chhavi Chauhan (CC) is the Director of Scientific Outreach and Continuing Medical Education for the American Society of Investigative Pathology. CC is also a key member of the DPA educational and membership initiatives. She joins Beyond the Scope to discuss the ethical considerations for new applications of artificial intelligence in medicine, and the specific role pathologists will play in forming new standards. CC is a passionate advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion in medicine, and importantly shares her vision, including how we can use large datasets, for a more globally connected and inclusive healthcare system.

    As one of the earliest adopters of digital pathology, Eric Glassy has been at the forefront of most of the major DP/AI innovations in the past 25 years. Eric joins Beyond The Scope to guide us through his career long journey with digital pathology. Serving on numerous boards and committees for organizations like the DPA, CAP, and API, Eric also discusses all of the work related to the CMS waiver for remote sign out (including where we currently stand today). Eric is the Medical Director of Affiliated Pathology Medical Group, a community pathology practice primarily serving Southern California. Therefore, he appropriately presents the benefits and perils of using DP/AI in the community setting.

    Dr. Joe Sirintrapun is a surgical pathologist and genitourinary tumor expert, currently serving as the Director of Pathology Informatics at MSKCC. Joe joins Beyond the Scope to discuss his journey to the current role at MSKCC, revealing the value of overcoming setbacks and defining some of the qualities needed to be a leader in the field of Informatics. Previously the President of The Association for Pathology Informatics (API), Joe talks about all of the work that was involved in the CLIA relaxation of regulation for remote sign-out and gives a status update about how long this may last.     Dr. Jason Hipp is the Chair of the Division of Computational Pathology and Artificial Intelligence at the Mayo Clinic and the Director of Digital Innovation for Mayo Reference Labs. Jason joins Beyond the Scope to discuss his career path, which includes work in academia, the NCI, big pharma, and big tech. His journey through an evolving digital pathology industry is paving the way for pathologists to occupy non-traditional roles, such as informatics director or clinical trials pathologist.     David Klimstra is the Chief Medical Officer at Paige and was previously the Chair of Pathology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Paige is a medical company offering the first FDA cleared artificial intelligence platform to assist with the diagnosis of prostate cancer. Dr. Klimstra joins the show to discuss building a robust digital pathology program at MSKCC and the transition from academia to industry. Furthermore, he offers insights into what the first FDA clearance for an AI product means to the industry and the overall breadth of AI applications in pathology.

    Sylvia Asa is an endocrine pathologist leading University Hospitals in Cleveland, OH into the era of digital pathology. Previously, Dr. Asa was the Head of Pathology at Canada's largest hospital network, where she successfully built a digital pathology workflow. She joins Beyond The Scope to discuss the moment of realizing the power of digitizing a slide to achieving a fully integrated digital pathology workflow in Canada's largest medical network. As a Chair of the upcoming DPA Visions Conference (October 17-19 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas), she previews the program and highlights some of the upcoming talks. Finally, Dr. Asa gives her thoughts on what the field of pathology may look like in 10-20 years.
