Beyond The Badge: Mainstream Media’s Narrative About Police Shootings Oct 03, 2018
    Show notes

BTB #1This week on Beyond The Badge, Vincent Hill discusses two officers killed in Brookhaven, MS Saturday during a shootout with a convicted felon who was under house arrest as well as newly released body cam of an officer involved shooting in Baltimore last week. In Baltimore, the suspect shot at officers ten times, striking one officer three times. Luckily, his vest took two of the bullets but he was shot in the elbow.

In both cases, Vincent talks about the lack of coverage because it doesn’t fit the narrative. However, would the reporting of these two previously convicted been different if the officers were not shot even with shooting at police?

Beyond The Badge: Memphis Police shooting of Martavious Banks Sep 26, 2018
    Show notes

BTB #1This week on Beyond The Badge, Vincent Hill dives into the Amber Guyger situation in Dallas. Guyger is the Dallas Police officer charged with manslaughter for the shooting death of Botham Jean, an unarmed Black man who was in his own apartment at the time of the shooting. Vincent explains why no one should rush to judgment in this case as to whether or not she is lying about believing she was at her apartment and why the issued search warrant the family is upset about may just validate her story.

Also, Vincent explores the shooting of Martavious Bank by Memphis Police. The 25-year old Banks was armed and ran from police before being shot during an altercation. There’s a lot of controversy surrounding this case because authorities are stating he was shot outside of his house getting out of a car while Banks’ family says he was shot in the house. Vincent explores the case, asks why what Banks did to have law enforcement called on him is being ignored, and why the public is ready to assume the shooting was racially motivated when the officers name and race haven’t even been released.

Beyond The Badge: Ex-Texas Cop Convicted Of Shooting Unarmed Black Teenager Aug 29, 2018
    Show notes

BTB #1This week on Beyond The Badge, law enforcement analyst Vincent Hill discusses Tuesday afternoon’s verdict of former Balch Springs, TX police offer Roy Oliver. Officer Oliver was convicted of murder of 15 year old Jordan Edwards.

If you aren’t familiar with the case, Officer Oliver and his partner, Tyler Gross, were called to a house party where there was underage drinking going on. While in the house, the officers heard gunshots and outside. Oliver retrieved his rifle while Gross ordered a car carrying Edwards and four other black teens to stop. The car stopped momentarily and then drove forward to Gross. Edwards felt his partner’s life was in danger and opened fire on the car, hitting and killing an unarmed Jordan Edwards who was in the front seat.

Oliver testified that he felt his partner’s life was in danger. However, Officer Gross testified that he never felt in danger, never felt the need to pull his own weapon, and never felt his life was in danger.

Vincent explains why he believes Officer Oliver thought he had to use deadly force and what ultimately led to his conviction.

Beyond The Badge: The “Stand Your Ground” Law, Trayvon Martin, & Markeis McGlockton Aug 01, 2018
    Show notes

BTB #1This week, law enforcement analyst Vincent Hill takes a long look at the “Stand Your Ground” law that was made famous in the Trayvon Martin case. With the documentary that premiered last night on Paramount Network and BET about the Trayvon Martin case, Vincent felt it was a good time to revisit the case.

The law is being spotlighted right now due to the shooting death of Markeis McGlockton in Clearwater, FL. McGlockton and his family pulled into a handicapped parking spot at a local convenient store when he was approached by 47-year old Michael Drejka, who had a reputation for being a local neighborhood nuisance. Drejka exchanged words with McGlockton and his family that led to McGlockton shoving Drejka to the ground. As you can see in the video, McGlockton was stepping away when he was shot in the side a few seconds later.

Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri announced that Drejka would not be arrested due to the “Stand Your Ground” law, which gives immunity to anyone in fear of their life to use lethal force to defend themselves.

It’s the same defense used by George Zimmerman in the Trayvon Martin case.

Vincent dives into that and much more on this week’s episode of Beyond The Badge!
