    Becoming Financially Confident

Breaking Free from Financial Shame, one conversation at a time.

Most money advice assumes you already know what you’re doing. This show doesn’t.
Becoming Financially Confident is a live weekday show for people who want to get their financial life in order without being lectured, judged, or sold something. Host Ralph Estep Jr. is a Licensed Public Accountant with more than 30 years of experience sitting across the desk from real people and real businesses — the shoebox of receipts, the tax notice nobody wants to open, the budget that never quite balances. He has made his own expensive mistakes, and he talks about them openly.

This is not a new voice. Ralph has published more than 1,200 episodes across eight seasons, earned national recognition for his work, and written nearly a thousand articles on money, taxes, technology, and small business. Becoming Financially Confident is the next chapter of that same show, in the same feed — sharper, live, and built around one idea: you are capable of figuring this out.

Every show opens with Headlines: what happened in the money world, and why it matters to your money and not just somebody’s portfolio. From there, the recurring segments include:

Do the Math — one real financial decision run all the way to the number.
The Envelope — a full teardown of a single financial product, account, or government program.
Yes or No — a question that usually gets “well, it depends” gets an actual answer.
Side Hustle Corner — what a side gig really pays after expenses, self-employment tax, and the hours nobody counts.
Explain It Like I’m Broke — plain-English translation of the jargon that keeps people from asking.
Scam of the Week — the ones running right now, and how to spot them before they cost you.
Bill of the Week — a line-by-line look at something everybody pays and almost nobody reads.
Homework — one task, free, finishable in fifteen minutes, with a check-in before the week is out.
Wins of the Week — listeners who did the thing, and what actually happened when they did.
What It Cost Me — Ralph puts his own money mistakes on the table.

This show is for the person making good money who still can’t say where it goes. The couple who have been meaning to build a budget for four years. The 52-year-old who opened the retirement statement and closed it again. The freelancer who just got a tax bill they weren’t expecting. If you have ever felt like everyone else got a manual you never received, you are the reason this show exists.

Here is the thing nobody says out loud: most people aren’t stuck because they lack discipline. They’re stuck because they’re ashamed — of the balance, of the mistake, of the years they didn’t start. Shame keeps the statement unopened and the question unasked, and an unasked question never gets answered. So this show asks them out loud, without flinching and without judgment, and then hands you the actual tools.

    Not just informed. Equipped.

Live at 11:30 AM Eastern, Monday through Friday, with the full episode in your podcast feed by 5:00 PM the same day. Weekly highlights drop every Saturday.

Ralph Estep Jr., LPA, is the founder of Saggio Management Group, an accounting practice he has run in Middletown, Delaware for more than 30 years. He is a financial educator, author, business coach, and podcast host.

How Can I Afford My Kids’ Activities Without Going Broke? Aug 01, 2025
    Show notes

Remember when a stick and some imagination were all we needed to have a good time? Fast forward to today, and kids’ interests come with schedules, equipment lists, and a surprising amount of logistics. Whether it's gymnastics on Tuesday, coding club on Thursday, or suddenly needing cleats right now for soccer tryouts, raising passionate, curious kids can feel like managing a small startup. In this episode, we're pulling back the curtain on the real cost of extracurriculars—and how to keep the dream alive without draining your bank account . So, how can I afford my kids’ activities without going broke? Grab a seat and let’s get into it!

    Read today’s blog article

Check out the full podcast episode here

Kids these days are like little tornadoes of energy, wanting to do everything from soccer to piano to robotics. And while it's awesome to see them so pumped about exploring their passions, let’s be real for a sec – that enthusiasm comes with a price tag. As parents, we often find ourselves in that classic tug-of-war: do we say yes and support their dreams, or do we clutch our wallets and think about the budget? In this episode, we’re diving into the nitty-gritty of how to manage extracurricular costs without losing our minds (or our savings).

Picture this: I drop a funny story about my own childhood attempt to become a tuba player after a random guy in school called me out on it. Spoiler alert: I ended up with a trumpet instead because, well, the tuba was a bit out of the price range. We talk about how every new interest your kid picks up can lead to a whole new set of expenses – registration fees, gear, travel costs, the whole shebang. So how do we keep our cool while still letting our kids try new things?

The key point I hammer home is about prioritization. Not every opportunity is a must-have, and it’s totally okay to say no sometimes. We talk about creating a simple extracurricular plan, sticking to a budget, and finding that sweet spot between joy and wise spending. By the end of this episode, you’ll be armed with actionable steps to help your family enjoy activities without breaking the bank. Let’s make sure we’re saying yes to what truly matters while keeping our financial sanity intact!

    Takeaways:

    • Kids have a ton of interests, but every activity comes with a price tag, right?
    • It's super important to prioritize what your kids really want to do and what fits the budget.
    • Not every opportunity is a must; learn to say no sometimes to avoid financial strain.
    • Creating a budget for extracurricular activities will help keep your finances in check and avoid overspending.
    • Researching the true costs of activities is key, from gear to travel expenses, keep it real!
    • Kids appreciate limits, so teaching them about money management now will totally pay off later.

Let’s get real—shopping with a plan is the way to go, and I’m here to help you tackle that list without breaking the bank. Stick around, and let’s make this back-to-school shopping a breeze as we answer the big question: How Can I Shop Smart for School Supplies: Essentials vs. Extras?

    Read today’s blog article

Check out the full podcast episode here

Back to school season is upon us, and let's be real, those supply lists can feel like a never-ending scroll of demands. You walk into the store armed with a list, but shortly after, you find yourself coming out with a cart full of stuff you didn’t even know you needed, right? That’s where today’s episode kicks off. We dive into the art of shopping smart, focusing on what your kiddos actually need versus what’s just shiny and tempting. It’s all about avoiding the dreaded budget regret and keeping those dollars in check while still making your kids feel like they’re getting the good stuff.

Ralph breaks down his back-to-school strategy, which is more like a life lesson in financial stewardship wrapped up in a shopping guide. He emphasizes the importance of crafting a ‘needs only’ list—think of it as your shopping battle plan. We talk about reusing what you already have, whether it’s those half-used crayons or last year’s backpacks that are still in decent shape. It’s a reminder that sometimes the best deals are the ones you already have waiting for you at home. Plus, we touch on how to involve your kids in the shopping process without losing your mind (or your wallet).

At the end of the day, it’s all about teaching discernment and making this back-to-school shopping experience a fun, educational moment instead of a stress-fest. Ralph wraps it up with a heartfelt prayer asking for wisdom in our purchases and a smooth school year for all, proving that financial confidence and faith can totally go hand in hand. So, grab your list, and let’s shop smart this year!

    Takeaways:

    • Back to school supply lists can be flashy, but let’s focus on what we really need, fam.
    • Creating a needs-only shopping list can save you from budget blowouts and stress, trust me.
    • Involve your kids in shopping decisions to teach them the difference between wants and needs.
    • Shopping smart means reusing what you already have before buying new stuff, no need to overspend!
    • Comparing prices and hunting for sales is key, but don’t get distracted by tempting discounts.
    • Start the school year with a clear plan and watch your financial confidence soar, it's a game changer!

How Can One Daily Habit Keep Me Focused on What Matters Most? Jul 27, 2025
    Show notes

Ever feel like you start off strong with your habits, only to watch them unravel the moment life gets hectic? You’re not alone. Whether it’s budgeting, meal planning, or just trying to catch your breath in the chaos, staying consistent when life throws punches is no small feat. But here’s the truth—lasting change doesn’t come from big, one-time pushes. It’s built in the quiet, everyday moments. Those small, steady rhythms are what keep us grounded when everything else feels like a whirlwind. And it all comes down to one powerful q0uestion: How can one daily habit keep me focused on what matters most?

Building solid habits is awesome, but let’s face it, keeping those habits alive when life gets all hectic? That’s a whole different ball game. Today, we’re diving into the nitty-gritty of creating a daily rhythm that helps you stay grounded, even when the world around you is throwing curveballs. This isn’t just about finance; it’s about finding that sweet spot in life where your money habits align with your values. You see, it’s super easy to start strong with budgeting and tracking your spending, but then life just swoops in and chaos ensues. A missed day turns into a week, and before you know it, you’re back to square one. But don’t sweat it! The key is simple: small daily check-ins. Just a few minutes each day can bring clarity, intention, and hey, a whole lot of peace.

So, what’s the deal with these daily check-ins? Well, it’s all about being consistent, not intense. Let’s take a peek at some scriptures that back this up—like how Jesus encourages us to ask for our daily bread, not weekly or monthly. It’s about those little daily disciplines that build up over time, leading to that financial freedom we’re all chasing. And Ralph lays out some practical steps for you: choose a time, ask yourself some key questions about your spending and values, and wrap it up with a bit of gratitude. This doesn’t have to be a long, drawn-out ritual—just a quick, intentional moment each day to keep your finances in check and your spirit anchored. So let’s kick those money worries to the curb and build that rhythm together!

    Takeaways:

    • Building strong habits is key to making real progress in life and finances.
    • Creating a daily rhythm helps to keep you grounded when life gets hectic and busy.
    • Consistency in daily check-ins can lead to big changes in your financial awareness.
    • Taking just a few minutes each day to reflect can help you align your spending with your values.
