Mudslide Review Oct 09, 2024

Our hosts return to the podcave and get stuck in with their review of, MUDSLIDE.

Alex and Will discuss the blend of classic monster movie and Alfred Hitchcock vibes in this episode. Highlighting the subway train and the laboratory sequences as the stand outs, as well as Ron Perlman's performance as Clayface.

Our hosts also notice that if Batman didn't get involved in this plot, Clayface would've been able to cure himself and that be one less problem for him to deal with in Gotham City.

They also discuss if Clayface has a smell and what it would be similar to, and how Alfred is dropping quality jokes that just go over Batman's head.

The Man Who Killed Batman (w/ Paul Dini) Review Oct 02, 2024

Our hosts return to the podcave and are joined by the one and only Paul Dini to review the episode, THE MAN WHO KILLED BATMAN.

Paul reflects on the making of the episode and shares many behind the scenes stories, including how the Simpson’s inspired the writing of this episode, where the name Sid the Squid comes from, and why his car ride home on the day of the recording was memorable.

What is Reality? Review Sep 11, 2024

The Batman Movie Review (or: Kermit the Riddler, here!) Feb 15, 2024

Eternal Youth Review (ft. Kevin Altieri & James Strecker) Feb 08, 2024

Our hosts return and welcome another incredible guest onto the pod! The one and only, Alan Burnett (story editor and producer of Batman the Animated Series).

His other credits include: Producer of Superman TAS, Batman Beyond, Justice League, and all other DCAU shows. As well as being the co-writer of the current Batman the Adventure Continues comics and the producer of so many DC animated films.

Alex and Will discuss Alan's relation to the character Charlie Collins in the episode JOKER'S FAVOR and how they came to be. Plus, Alan shares how he came up with the origin story for Two-Face in the DCAU, why he likes villains like Scarface or Clayface, and what he thinks of the episode, THE TERRIBLE TRIO.

Alan then shares the stories of when he was in the same room as Alfred Hitchcock (one of his idols) and how Hitchcock influenced Batman the Animated Series. Plus, he discusses his current collaborative work with Paul Dini on Batman the Adventure Continues comics, and his memories of Kevin Conroy.

Not only did he grant his own wish and became known as the "Ra's guy" around the studio, he also went and got Denny O'Neil to write the first two Ra's episodes!

He recalls working with Bruce Timm, Paul Dini, Alan Burnett, Shirley Walker, and all of the amazing voice cast, including some lovely memories of Kevin Conroy.

Kevin also discusses directing the Two-Face episodes, including how the famous animated rain was captured in Part 2. The day that Paul Dini brought the idea of Harley Quinn into his office and why it took him so long to direct a Harley episode. His experiences creating the look and feel of the first episode, On Leather Wings, including the influences behind the batcave. How he introduced Jonah Hex into the DCAU, and so much more!

Alex sits down with Robert to discuss his work on Batman, which involves writing the episodes: His Silicon Soul, What is Reality?, and Lock-Up.

Robert shares the inspirations behind the Paul Dini created character of Lock-Up, including how Robert mirrored him off of a famous Martin Scorsese character. Robert also explains why the final scene of that episode takes place on a prison boat, how Lock-Up is the closest villain to being like Batman, and what he wanted to name the character originally.

Then Robert shares the greatest way you can defeat the Riddler and how it ended up in the final draft of What is Reality? Plus, sharing how His Silicon Soul became an episode and how Business Standards & Practices restrictive policies actually ended up giving him a better ending. Be A Clown Review Mar 14, 2023

Our hosts return and attend a birthday party that starts out strong, but the third act of BE A CLOWN, really does kill the party vibe.

Alex and Will discuss how the idea of the Joker disguising himself as a clown and attending a birthday party with the intention of blowing it up, is a really strong idea, but once the party ends, so does the quality of the episode. Even with the odes to The Killing Joke and The Dark Knight Returns, this episode just doesn't light their candle.

Our hosts discuss ways to improve the story, such as how young Jordan should have wanted to become a clown instead of a magician, and rebel against his neglecting father. Or, even more sinister, become a sidekick to the Joker and a real threat to Batman, as he can’t punch a kid in the mouth for being a menace!

Alex and Will laugh at the fact that Batman knows when garbage collection day is for each district of Gotham, and also take joy in realising that this episode is the origin of the popular Batman thumbs up meme.

Also discussed in this episode is the recent announcement of Amazon purchasing the Bruce Timm lead animated series, The Caped Crusader. Plus, a live action casting choice for Mayor Hill and another hilarious Caped Capers scenario.

The Forgotten Review Mar 08, 2023

Our hosts return and sit down to review, THE FORGOTTEN, an episode that is near and dear to their hearts and a true guilty pleasure.

Both Alex and Will are surprised at how well this episode holds up and most importantly, how much fun it was to watch.

They take a deep dive, discussing how this episode is the equivalent of a story where a superhero loses their powers and learns what it takes to be a hero. Alex and Will also believe that Boss Biggis is a cannibal and eating his enslaved workforce, as well noticing how the bat-computer is a sassy B, and that Alfred saves the day.

Also discussed in this episode is the recent casting announcement for the new TMNT movie, plus a fan-cast choice for Boss Biggis in a Batman TAS live-action universe.

P.O.V. Review Mar 01, 2023

Our hosts return and sit down in a large, dark room and shine a spotlight on the episode, P.O.V.

Alex and Will discuss how this episode is a love letter to film noir and that it finally reveals the vibe of BTAS that has mostly been missing in the episodes that have come before it.

The Underdwellers Review Feb 22, 2023

Our hosts return and plunge deep into their review of, THE UNDERDWELLERS.

Alex and Will are surprised at how much they actually liked this episode, expecting it to be one of the worst of the series from memory.
