Mathew Fraser (@mathewfras) is an American professional CrossFit Athlete. With a coined mantra of "Hard Work Pays Off" (HWPO), he has been a dominant force on the CrossFit Games stage since the beginning of his career defining a legacy in the sport. In 2016, Fraser hit the competition floor and took 1st place, it was the first historic victory of his career, winning by the largest margin of victory in Games History. In 2017 and 2018 Fraser repeated not only his overall finish but each year has bested his own set record for winning by the larger margin of victory in Games History. In 2016 he led by 197 points, in 2017 he led by 216 points and in 2018 he led by 220 points. Fraser holds accolades in competitive sport before his time as reigning and defending Champ in CrossFit. He is a 3x Junior National Champion Olympic Weightlifter and a former U.S. Olympic Weightlifting team hopeful. In 2008- 2009 he was a resident Athlete at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO. Some Crossfit O.G. Talk W/ Blair Morrison and Ben Alderman — Real Chalk #62 Feb 12, 2019
    Show notes

I'm teaming up with two CrossFit OGs for this episode, comin' atcha from Wodapalooza weekend! As veterans of Regionals, the Games, podcasting in the fitness community, gym-owning, and everything in between, Blair (@morrison_blair) and Ben (@ironmile_ben) need no introduction—which is why they don't get one. We get right down to airing our unfiltered opinions on Sectionals, Ben Smith's post about event programming, Rich Froning's shoes, Jen Widerstrom, and why the CrossFit community brings together the most awesome people. 🤗

We go way back to the beginning of literally everything: our early gym days, competing, what our moms thought good nutrition looked like, training for the Olympics, starting podcasts, starting families, and what we used to dream about when we were kids. Flash forward to today: we're setting new goals, climbing new mountains, and living far, far away from Jersey. 🏔

Don't worry, it's not just the best shit-shooting session you've ever gotten to listen in to. It's also packed with useful tips for business-building, training safely, achieving epic things, and staying relevant even after you're not actively competing anymore. Plus, if you've ever wondered whether other CrossFitters are unimpressed with HQ's sweethearts, now is your chance to find out. 😉

    Enjoy!

Jesse Elder: Curiosity, Intelligence, And The Difference Between Effort And Struggle — The Bledsoe Show #120 Feb 08, 2019
    Show notes

Jesse Elder's (@jesseelderlive) own journey to self-mastery unfolded as he grew up in a family of 7. Being homeschooled, Jesse was given the gift by his parents of being largely self-directed in his education and spent hours exploring ideas that interested him. At the age of 9 Jesse was introduced to martial arts. Hitting the mats every week became a passion that would play a powerful role throughout Jesse's life.

Coming out of his teenage years, Jesse learned that some things in life are too important to ignore and even though it might be uncomfortable, you must do what you think is right. This lesson helped give Jesse the courage to open his own school, which eventually transformed into him realizing that big ideas aren't just for one person, but for anyone who desires more out of their life. The result of this realization is his website, jesseelder.com, which is a "vault" of mind videos at anyone's disposal.

In this episode we talk with Jesse about unconditional acceptance of self, developing a mindset of curiosity, the difference between effort and struggle, obeying the laws of nature, and, the all important question, last month, how many things did you do for the first time? You'll find lots of truth in this episode from a man who manages to live life faster than me.

    Enjoy!

    -Mike

    Episode Breakdown:

⚡️0-10: Jesse has tried a lot, here is what he's not going to recommend to you (hint: he won't allow you to live through him)

⚡️11-20: Why you need unconditional acceptance of yourself before you can serve others

⚡️21-30: Developing a mindset of curiosity leads to an expanded sense of intelligence and the difference between effort and struggle

⚡️31-40: Thought, feeling, action, repeat: The power of obeying the laws of nature

⚡️ 41-50: Memories and how we create the past every time we visit it

⚡️51-60: Blurring the lines of past, present, and future and the power of presence

⚡️61-70: Time is a narrative constructed by language, the importance of context, and the moment between the parentheses

⚡️71-80: The power of practicing courage and creating alignment in your life

⚡️81-90: Choosing to release resistance in your life

⚡️91-100: Why Jesse shaved his beard off

⚡️10-112: Last month, how many things did you do for the first time?

Devon Larratt: Why Pain Is Information And A Deep Dive Into A Sport You Know Nothing About — Muscle Maven Radio Episode #1 Feb 07, 2019
    Show notes

Devon Larratt (@devlarratt) is a world champion arm wrestler (in both arms) and received mainstream fame with his YouTube video defeating The Mountain Thor Bjornsson in an armwrestling match. He's also a twenty-year veteran of the Canadian military, with time spent in an elite special forces unit, and one of the most dedicated athletes on the planet–with a healthy dose of humor, stoicism, and just plain genetic freakiness.

In this deep-dive interview with Devon, we talk about how he found the sport of armwrestling, how he came to dominate the sport–including his training, diet, mindset, and even psychological warfare tactics against his opponents. We also talk about his military service and how he is able to transfer the intensity and stress of that job to help him excel in his chosen sport, and in life in general. We also go on tangents including drugs and drug testing in armwrestling, how women are navigating the traditionally male-dominated sport, and pain and injury management— and how many arms Devon's broken during his career.

    Episode Highlights:

8 - 20 Intro to the sport of armwrestling

20 - 32 Devon talks about the physicality of the sport and gnarly injuries (both to himself and others)

    32 - 54 Deep dive into training

54 – 1:06 Drug testing in armwrestling, and sports in general

    1:06 – 1:10 Women in armwrestling

1:10 - 1:22 Devon's diet, including a rabbit hole about some very weird experimental diets and a buffet-related eating injury

1:22 -1:34 Discussion of the mental game, and how to supremely mess with your opponents while still being respectful

1:34 -1:47 Devon discusses his military background and mindset, tells some actual war stories, and how his military career informs his approach to life and his career as a professional athlete

The Military Mindset: Balancing Work And Fitness W/ Chandler Smith — Real Chalk #61 Feb 05, 2019
    Show notes

Chandler Smith (@blacksmifff) is making a name for himself in the fitness world while holding it down in the Army—except for one time he got his finger chopped off. (You bet that story is included in this episode!) But he's fine, and crushing it on the Misfit team at Wodapalooza.

What does it take to be an athlete with a brand? We talk about the way the game has changed, being competitive while working a day job, and how sometimes you just need to fail until something works. Chandler gives us a glimpse into the influence Army training has had on his fitness career, and tells us what's next for him.

It may not always love us back (injuries, bad judges, the new Games qualification format) but we've got a lot of appreciation for this sport and all the crazy people we get to do it with. Whether you're a failed athlete in another sport, or you peaked and needed a new outlet, or you're just a savage addicted to the pain cave, there's room for you.

Now get out there and kill it!

    -Ryan

1:00 How the game has changed since Fisch's day (failed athletes and real jobs)

5:15 Chandler's training/school balance, transitioning from wrestling to CrossFit

8:00 Adapting to limitations (Tarzan and Jane)

9:30 Fisch's military aspirations and some backstory

14:30 How military training influences CrossFit, but also the toll on your body

    20:00 Injury repair and maintenance

27:00 If you can't win the Games, build a brand

36:00 You may not be able to imagine your life trajectory yet, so just go do stuff

37:00 The things Ryan does to get a workout in

40:30 Chandler chopped his finger off, but it just stoked the fire

45:30 What's next? Don't hold your breath for a Army x CrossFit collaboration

47:00 We're all weirdos here. Some of us are born with it, some of us have worked really hard.

    54:30 Where to find Chandler
