El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie (2019) Oct 14, 2019

Show notes

Jim and A.Ron watched Netflix's El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie. We follow Jesse as he escapes from the nazi compound, and fondly remember a time when nazism in America seemed preposterous. They enjoyed the movie overall, and are always glad to be back in the ABQ.

The Deuce - S03E05 - You Only Get One Oct 09, 2019

Show notes

This episode of The Deuce has re-surfaced a lot of difficult feelings for Jim and A.Ron. Paul meets Tod's parents and it has us thinking about our own parents, beliefs, and mortality. Jim made an accurate prediction about Frankie's home movie, but it's still a touching family moment. Eileen also confronts her idea of family and support. Lori is on her own while Greg does "his own thing". There is plenty of damage to be had all around.

Joker (2019) Oct 04, 2019

Show notes

Jim and I went to see the Joker tonight, and it was intense, challenging, but also beautiful and engrossing look at mental illness and the sicknesses at the heart of our society. Director Todd Phillips gives us a plausible, believable, and terrifying Joker to inhabit a world that is set in a hazy late 70s period but the political landscape is very 21st century. We can see multiple ways this movie could be considered "dangerous", but we feel the most dangerous thing about it could be people ignoring the many cautionary tales it packs into it's run-time.

We'll be back in two weeks to discuss what we imagine to be a bit lighter fare; Zombieland: Double Tap!

The Deuce - S03E04 - They Can Never Go Home Oct 02, 2019

Show notes

We are halfway through the final season of The Deuce, and there is a lot to discuss. A.Ron has two prophecies come true in one episode! Lori is back in New York, and battling her insecurities. Abby recruits Candi to speak with Women Against Pornography; and it's a tough crowd. Jim and A.Ron don't have the final answers, but they're brainstorming. Finally, Frankie has an emotional scene with Vincent and Dr. Mike that has us wondering what an "infield-fly rule" is.

The Deuce - S03E03 - Normal is a Lie Sep 25, 2019

Show notes

Jim and A.Ron discuss the latest episode of The Deuce, ‘Normal is a Lie’. The women of The Deuce are fighting for rights to their own money and choices about their own body. The men of The Deuce, (or Deucey’s as A.Ron calls them) are are either pushing boundaries and taking advantage, or too stupid to know any better. We assume that everyone, including anyone who looks completely healthy, is dying of AIDS. They also consider if the police really have the neighborhood’s best interests in mind.

Ad Astra (2019) Sep 20, 2019

Show notes

Jim and I went to the outer reaches of the solar system with Ad Astra, the paradoxically slow moving, absorbing, thoughtful, but action packed sci-fi film starring Brad Pitt and Tommy Lee Jones. We spend the better part of an hour talking about what we thought the film was about, and the strange, ultra-realistic yet dreamy quality to a lot of the proceedings. I think we both admired the film more than loved it, but I at least wouldn't be surprised if further contemplation (and watches) revealed some hidden depths.

We'll see you in two weeks for The Joker!

Please enjoy our spoiler-free review of the movie as well as a discussion of upcoming films and trailers, but if you want to hear our full, spoiler-filled analysis you'll have to be a Club Bald Move member!
