Ep. 446: Should the Cardinals have long-term concern over Tyler O'Neill's durability after his latest nagging injury? Aug 10, 2023
    Show notes

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the strange circumstances for Tyler O'Neill over the past couple of days after he was scratched again from the lineup Wednesday as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Rays 6-4.

O'Neill has been dealing with knee tightness, and it seems the Tropicana Field turf is central to his concern. Is this an injury O'Neill should be playing through in order to demonstrate his reliability ad durability to the Cardinals? Or does it make the most sense to hold O'Neill back until he's mentally convinced he can give it 100% on the field?

This chicken or egg debate requires some nuance, but it's worth having the discussion because the Cardinals are going to have to make a decision about O'Neill one way or another before constructing their lineup for 2024.

Ep. 445: Did Oli Marmol pull Mikolas too early in Tuesday's Cardinals loss in Tampa? Aug 09, 2023
    Show notes

Brenden Schaeffer discusses Tuesday's 4-2 loss for the Cardinals down in Tampa as the Rays got the better of the Redbirds late. Miles Mikolas was twirling a gem through seven but was pulled after allowing a leadoff triple in the eighth.

Was it the right decision by Oli Marmol? Brenden takes some time to explore that question, because while there was a sensible explanation for removing Mikolas, the strategy employed by going to Andre Pallante -- and using the groundball specialist the way they did -- didn't seem to make the most sense.

Also, does another nagging injury for Tyler O'Neill further color the Cardinals' view of whether they can rely upon the athletic outfielder next season?

Ep. 444: Twitter Q&A leads to candid discussion of expectations for the Cardinals approach to the upcoming off-season Aug 08, 2023
    Show notes

Brenden Schaeffer took to Twitter for topics and questions from the audience for the off-day podcast on Monday, August 7, 2023.

After discussing the bizarre behavior by Orioles ownership as it pertains to broadcaster Kevin Brown's suspension, we essentially lay out a helicopter-view outlook on what Brenden expects to see from the St. Louis Cardinals front office in its approach to retooling the team this winter.

Ep. 443: Zack Thompson Strikes Out EIGHT In Spot Start -- Should Cardinals Give Him A Longer Look In Rotation? Aug 07, 2023
    Show notes

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals' 1-0 loss to the Rockies from Sunday, August 7, 2023 in the context of the brilliant outing by Zack Thompson. The lefty was only slated to be the opener for a bullpen game for the Cardinals Sunday, with manager Oli Marmol saying he would let Thompson go as long as he could--but realistically, how long could that be?

Turns out, four innings of one-run baseball as Thompson struck out a whopping EIGHT hitters to command the attention of the organization. Should Thompson be on the radar for more opportunities in the starting rotation? As the Cardinals plan for what their starting five might be in 2024, should Thompson be under consideration after what he showed Sunday?

Ep. 442: Is Steven Matz now the Cardinals' best starter? If it sounds crazy, just check the stats... Aug 06, 2023
    Show notes

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the St. Louis Cardinals' 6-2 win over the Rockies from Saturday, August 5, 2023. Steven Matz has suddenly turned himself into a model of dependability for the Cardinals, turning in his third straight start with six innings pitched. He's got a 0.78 ERA since rejoining the rotation in early July. These are all real stats... But how much weight do they carry when thinking about what the St. Louis pitching rotation should look like in 2024? Plus, what do we think of the Tyler O'Neill resurgence in the context of the Cardinals' crowded outfield? He homered again on Saturday, by the way. Patreon: Patreon.com/bschaeffer12

Ep. 441: So... Is Adam Wainwright going to make it to 200 wins?? Aug 05, 2023
    Show notes

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the start by Adam Wainwright from Friday's 9-4 Cardinals loss to the Rockies at Busch Stadium and poses the question on the mind of every Cards fan when it comes to the beloved veteran... Is he going to eventually reach his 200-win milestone or not?

It's been a rough season for Waino, but the right-hander seems to believe his stuff is still good enough to compete if he makes a few minor tweaks, particularly the one needed to improve his results with two outs in an inning. Do you think Wainwright can earn those elusive two wins before the end of the year?

Ep. 440: Another HUGE Night For Masyn Winn -- When Will He Get The Call To The St. Louis Cardinals? Aug 04, 2023
    Show notes

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the St. Louis Cardinals' 5-3 loss to the Twins from Thursday, August 3, 2023. Matthew Liberatore continued to struggle as the Cardinals keep waiting for him to take command of a rotation spot.

Alec Burleson was a bright spot, however -- How much consideration should he earn from the club when it comes to playing time the rest of the way? Plus, Brenden stumps for a Memphis Redbird to get a call-up to the big leagues -- and he's not talking about Masyn Winn.

We do, however, dive into the situation for the Cardinals' top prospect after the shortstop went 4-for-5 for the Triple-A squad on Thursday night. Why isn't Winn in St. Louis and how long will it be before he gets there? All covered before tonight's episode concludes.

    Timestamps:

To open the show: Libby struggles -- How far does prospect pedigree take you? A general discussion on how the Cardinals should view the number of outside additions necessary to field a good starting rotation in 2024.

22:43 - Alec Burleson -- With his recent hot streak, is this a guy Cardinals fans wrote off too early? And is he one the team would ultimately regret trading?

31:45 - Brenden starts pounding the drum for a call-up from Triple-A--but it’s not the one you think it is

39:20 - Masyn Winn -- After a four-hit night at Memphis, why is he not in St. Louis yet, and when can you expect him to get there?

Ep. 439: Dakota Hudson takes no-no into the sixth while the Cardinal outfield UNLOADS on Joe Ryan Aug 03, 2023
    Show notes

Brenden Schaeffer discusses Wednesday's 7-3 win for the St. Louis Cardinals over the Twins as we just saw a version of Dakota Hudson that it feels like we have not seen in years as the 28-year-old righty struck out seven batters while taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning.

It may sound crazy to ask, but is there anything Dak can do down the stretch to earn genuine consideration for the 2024 starting rotation? Or have his struggles been too prolonged to reinvent himself in a meaningful way in the eyes of the organization?

Plus there's a big conversation on the Cardinals outfield that will be ongoing ahead of next season, with big decisions looming over the winter. Well, we saw four of the guys in that mix for that 2024 outfield all hit home runs Wednesday against the Minnesota starter. Tyler O'Neill was one of them--where does he fit into this discussion if he's healthy and playing confidently?

Ep. 438: Cardinals close out the trading period with a bang, trading DeJong and Flaherty before deadline -- What did they get?! Aug 02, 2023
    Show notes

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the St. Louis Cardinals' final flurry of activity before the MLB trade deadline on Tuesday, August 1, 2023. The Cardinals moved Paul DeJong and Jack Flaherty ahead of the deadline, but how do we evaluate these moves?

The prospect return was arguably light in the DeJong deal, but we explain why that was likely always going to be the case due to the financial implications of getting a PDJ trade over the finish line.

The Flaherty deal is one we explained on Monday night's episode just *had* to get done. It did and may have produced one of the most intriguing prospects that the Cardinals added over this entire week.

Ep. 437: Will the Cardinals hold onto Flaherty through the trade deadline after all? Aug 01, 2023
    Show notes

Brenden Schaeffer discusses some of the final finishing touches for the St. Louis Cardinals ahead of the MLB trade deadline including how the team might look to handle the final marquee pitcher with an expiring contract remaining of the roster.

I've assumed Jack Flaherty would be traded at all costs, but a new report by Derrick Goold on the eve of the deadline describes the possibility for an alternate approach that the Cardinals could take.

In today's episode of the show, we'll explain what that approach might be and give our opinion on whether it's a wise one.
