Ep. 426: 'Ain't got time for thinking about next year' Nolan Arenado will hear none of your white flag talk Jul 19, 2023
    Show notes

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the thrilling 5-2 win for the Cardinals over the Marlins Tuesday as St. Louis walked it off on a homer by Nolan Arenado. We hear from Nolan on the pod regarding the notion that he might be playing for anything other than still prioritizing each and every game of 2023--he's not worried one bit about 2024 just yet.

Plus, Dylan Carlson continues to make Brenden look so smart that it's actually starting to scare him a little bit.

Ep. 425: Mozeliak waves the white flag on 2023; Is Dylan Carlson boutta be traded? Jul 18, 2023
    Show notes

Brenden Schaeffer dives in on a marathon episode on the podcast, giving you a chance to hear from Dylan Carlson, Nolan Arenado and of course, John Mozeliak from a jam-packed Monday at Busch.

In the afternoon, Mozeliak spoke to reporters to announce more formally the fact that this team is in sell mode, looking to improve their roster for 2024. We dive into a ton of details pertaining to that declaration, as well as hear from Nolan Arenado on the notion that he, uhhhh, doesn't really want to talk about white flags in July of his baseball season!

Of course, all of the above takes place in the second half of our loaded episode. That's because we had to spend a lot of time on Dylan Carlson and the fact that he once again has been given the shaft by the club. Hear from Dylan himself on how that's got him feeling.

There's so much in these 80 minutes that we almost forget to talk about Genesis Cabrera being DFA'd. Buckle up, Monday was a wild one.

Ep. 424: Was this Flaherty's final home start at Busch Stadium?? Jul 17, 2023
    Show notes

Brenden Schaeffer discusses Sunday's 8-4 win for the Cardinals over the Nationals. With the trade deadline looming, was this outing Jack Flaherty's final home start at Busch Stadium? If it was, he went out on a solid note by recording a Quality Start in a Cardinals win.

The lineup responded with a glowing performance, particularly at the top of the order. General thoughts clarifying our view of Lars Nootbaar and others on the ball club are found within today's episode.

Ep. 423: Burly and the bats pick up the slack to earn doubleheader split Jul 16, 2023
    Show notes

Brenden Schaeffer discusses Saturday's split in the doubleheader between the Cardinals and Nationals. It seems poor relief pitching and fundamentals--two common themes of the season--were to blame for the Game 1 loss. Is it time to just call it what it is with Willson Contreras behind the plate?

But Game 2 featured an eruption for the offense as the bats came alive with some help from the corner outfield defense to secure a win in the nightcap.

Ep. 422: What's the deal with all this Nolan Arenado trade chatter? Jul 14, 2023
    Show notes

Brenden Schaeffer dives into the swirling social media rumors -- largely driven by Yankees fans, it seems -- that the Cardinals might be looking to trade Nolan Arenado at the upcoming deadline. Plus we get into which Cardinals we think are truly untouchable leading up to July 31.

Honestly, the list isn't all that lengthy, but there definitely are some names we would be surprised to see on the move.

Ep. 421: Reacting to John Mozeliak's comments -- Mo admits Cardinals will SELL at trade deadline? Jul 13, 2023
    Show notes

Brenden Schaeffer reacts to the recent comments made by St. Louis Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak in an interview with Fox 2 KTVI's sports director Martin Kilcoyne. Mozeliak basically has acknowledged what we've all expected for some time based on the team's record: the Cardinals will be sellers at the MLB trade deadline.

We get into our thoughts on Mozeliak's reckoning with the reality of where the Cardinals are, as the team he built for 2023 has decidedly not lived up to expectations.

Ep. 420: Former Cardinals SHINE in All-Star Game: Why Did Mo Let Them Go? Jul 12, 2023
    Show notes

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the former Cardinals who thrived in Tuesday's MLB All-Star Game as the National League beat the American League for the first time since 2012.

It leads into a deep-dive retrospective on how the Cardinals front office landed in the predicament of watching their former prospects balling out for other teams on a big stage.

The painful conversation we've all known was out there, but the one you simply can't escape as a Cardinals fan.

Ep. 419: Which valuable young position player might the Cardinals consider trading for starting pitching? Jul 11, 2023
    Show notes

Brenden Schaeffer touches on the home run derby results before diving in on an in-depth discussion on the state of the St. Louis Cardinals pitching rotation and how trading from a surplus by moving a young position player that they probably don't want to trade might arguably be the best path toward improving the rotation for now and into the future.

Plus, we get into the Quinn Mathews draft pick and hear from Cardinals Director of Scouting Randy Flores on what he thought about the St. Louis fourth-rounder throwing 156 pitches in a Super Regional game for Stanford last month.

Ep. 418: Cardinals draft slugging outfielder, win in Chicago despite fundamental lapses Jul 10, 2023
    Show notes

Brenden Schaeffer breaks down the Cardinals' 4-3 win over the White Sox as well as the selection of U. of Arizona outfielder Chase Davis with the 21st overall pick in Sunday's MLB Draft first round.

Plenty of breakdown on the newest member of the Cardinal organization before we dive into how fundamentals nearly tanked the day on the South Side, but Steven Matz was fantastic in his return to the rotation and JoJo Romero held up to finish the job. The discussion on fundamentals, though, and who is to blame for the issues will be worth your time.

    Key timestamps:

Cardinals draft slugging OF Chase Davis at No. 21 (3:00)

Is Steven Matz, like… Actually back? (27:15)

Brenden offers a mea culpa on his Montgomery concern from Saturday (29:49)

The Cardinals' fundamentals are… not good! How much is Contreras contributing to it? (33:30)

A tease for Tuesday’s show + being happy for JoJo (52:48)

Ep. 417: Cardinals finally win a Mikolas start, but the Montgomery update is a concern Jul 09, 2023
    Show notes

Brenden Schaeffer breaks down the Cardinals 3-0 win over the White Sox from Saturday as Miles Mikolas pitches a gem to earn his first win in more than a month while Jordan Walker wallops another home run to continue his sturdy rookie campaign.

We get somewhat of an update on the Jordan Montgomery hamstring injury and reading between the lines, it doesn't seem like a positive one. Tink Hence in the Futures Game was cool, though! Plus, what was the deal with that whole Gio Gallegos towel incident?
