In The Boudoir Of Noir... Nov 26, 2023

Show notes

In this edition of Attaboy Clarence, I'll be taking a tour through film noir with a brace of reviews...

First, a twisty tale of loveless marriages and lovestruck marksmen in The Great Flamarion, starring Erick Von Stroheim, Dan Duryea and Mary Beth Hughes.

Then Ray Milland is in spidery villain mode, turning good girl, Ann Todd into a femme fatale before our very eyes, in gaslight noir, So Evil My Love...

I'm also joined by special guest and noir expert, Karen Hannsberry, who shares her fascinating list of five noir stunners that may have passed you by.

You'll also have a chance to guess the identity of the noir star in Who The Hell Is That Hollywood Legend? And radio entertainment comes from the great Suspense, with a sequel to one of noir's greatest hits...

In this edition of Attaboy Clarence, join me as I review three classic movies, including an all-timer of a rom-com, a noir thriller set in the world of golf (no, really...), and a police procedural with a decidedly modern flavour.

Diabolical Hitchcock-alikes Jun 18, 2023

Show notes

Attaboy Clarence returns, and to usher in the summer let's step into the shadows with two fine examples of Golden Age thrillers that bear more than a passing resemblance to the work of The Master Of Suspense - one tells the tale of a blind playwright who overhears a most diabolical plot, and the other is the twisted story of a murderous couple with very different ideas about the outcome of their relationship...

There's another chance to guess the identity of a famous Hollywood star in Who The Hell Is That Hollywood Legend? See whattawa it's all about with the all-new Ottawa Song, and there's a radio entertainment headed your way directly from the hand of Alfred Hitchcock himself, but with a twist...

Being The Ricardo Apr 02, 2023

Show notes

In this episode of Attaboy Clarence, the spotlight falls on one of Hollywood's most talented, yet undersung leading men - Ricardo Cortez - the man who brought a certain sense of sparkle to every genre in Old Hollywood (he was cinema's first ever Sam Spade!)

I'll be taking you through three Ricardo Cortez classics, including a Pre-Code shocker from the pen of Anita Loos, a murder mystery with an intriguing background, and a satirical take on Hollywood life with added espionage!

Radio entertainment this time comes courtesy of a strangely-named, but endearingly charming hour from the past...

Rootin' Tootin' Mar 09, 2023

Show notes

Saddle up and let's head on off... out... in (?) to adventure as I embrace the genre that's always been a little elusive to me - the western!

I'll tell you all about two examples of western storytelling that I consider to be just swell. One is a genre-bending horror thriller produced by cinema's greatest horror maestro. The other is the deeply affecting tale of three criminals who find themselves on the road to redemption when they decide to save the life of a child...

There's music from Hank Williams, some painting advice from everyone's favourite screen star, and a gut-wrenching radio adventure featuring one of the true greats...

Jacques Attack! Feb 13, 2023

Show notes

This time round, we turn the show over to France's gift to the Golden Age of Hollywood, the man who always made something to surprise his audiences: Jacques Tourneur!

Many remember him as the man who helped Val Lewton to establish a new and unique brand of cinematic horror, but his back catalogue also contains some wonderfully dramatic programmers, gothic melodramas, and of course, film noir...

In this episode I'll tell you about two fantastic, under-seen Tourneur gems - Experiment Perilous starring Hedy Lamarr, and Phantom Raiders starring Walter Pidgeon and Donald Meek!

There's a dip into the Question Pot, a flight upon some very odd "Wings", the answer to why girls won't dance with you, and a very special radio presentation featuring a certain actor/madman...

The Warner Corner Jan 16, 2023

Show notes

In this all-new edition of Attaboy Clarence...

Some delightful melodies from Louis Armstrong and Henry Hall (one of which might be more fitting for Halloween...)

We answer the question: What must your diet be if you need an Airwick freshener?

Another guessing game from Who The Hell Is That Hollywood Legend! (Clue: it's a swashbuckler who once starred in a film with a HUGE twist)

And then we're in the very capable hands of Warner Brothers as we take a look at two of their 1937 hits - one a dark tale of resentment and prejudice, and the other an empowering but brutal tale of ladies vs gangsters - and both starring one of their most iconic leading men.

He's also back to star in one of Warner's most famous weepies for the radio in a truly wonderful piece of fantasy casting

Welcome to The Warner Corner!
