AT Parenting Survival | Raising Kids with OCD & Anxiety

If you’re raising a child or teen with OCD or anxiety, you’re in the right place.

Parenting a child with OCD can feel confusing, exhausting, and isolating, but you don’t have to figure it out alone. Each week, therapist Natasha Daniels shares practical, evidence-based strategies to help you understand how OCD and anxiety really work, respond in ways that support recovery, and feel more confident as a parent.

Whether your child struggles with contamination OCD, intrusive thoughts, reassurance seeking, perfectionism, moral OCD, social anxiety, panic, school refusal, or other anxiety-related challenges, you’ll learn realistic tools you can use at home right away.

Drawing from more than 20 years of clinical experience and her own journey parenting children with OCD and anxiety, Natasha breaks down complex topics into clear, compassionate guidance that parents can actually apply. Episodes cover OCD treatment, ERP (Exposure and Response Prevention), reducing family accommodation, managing meltdowns, supporting therapy, and navigating everyday challenges with confidence.

Whether you’re newly discovering that your child’s anxiety may actually be OCD, searching for better ways to help, or simply looking for reassurance that you’re not alone, this podcast is here to support you every step of the way.

PSP 223: How to Not Compare Your Child to Other Kids Aug 17, 2021
    Show notes

The comparing game can be so tempting.

Why can her kids do that and mine can’t?

Why is it so easy for them and everything is so difficult for us?

Why do we have to go through this?

I wish my child was like that.

Trust me I get it, I live it. But in this episode of the AT Parenting Survival Podcast I talk about how to get out of that mindset or at least not live in it permanently.

PSP 222: Interview with Instagram on Safety Measures for Our Kids & Teens Aug 10, 2021
    Show notes

We cannot cocoon our kids from social media and online platforms forever. Eventually most of our kids will enter the online world. So what can we do as parents to keep our kids safe? What are platforms like Instagram doing to stay on top of the wave of younger and younger children on their platforms?

I had the pleasure of talking with Vaishnavi, Instagram’s head of Safety and Well Being. She discussed the latest changes and policies IG is implementing to help keep our kids safe. She also talks about how we can talk to our kids about online safety.

PSP 219: How to Help a Child with Both Autism and OCD Jul 20, 2021
    Show notes

Many parents who are raising children with both Autism and OCD find themselves in a no man’s land of sorts. Professionals treating Autism don’t always understand OCD and those treating OCD don’t always understand Autism. Ugh. What a struggle.

That is why talking to Dr. Rebecca Sachs is like talking to a rare unicorn. Her practice, CBT Spectrum specializes in both and her knowledge runs deep!

I invited her on to the AT Parenting Survival Podcast to answer the most common questions I get from parents who are navigating both these words simultaneously.

PSP 218: The Power of Helping Your Child’s Anxiety by Working on Your Own Jul 13, 2021
    Show notes

Anxiety and OCD doesn’t live in a bubble, it lives in our house. As parents we have to walk the walk and talk the talk. But what does that mean? It means tapping into our own fears, regardless of whether we have anxiety or OCD ourselves. It means knowing ourselves and the human fears that come with it. It means walking towards fear and discomfort the way we ask our kids to do.

In this AT Parenting Survival Podcast episode I talk about why it’s important for all parents to examine their own fears to help their kids. I also talk about how to start doing it!

PSP 217: Helping Kids Who Struggle to Eat with ARFID and OCD Jul 06, 2021

OCD is scary enough, but when it starves your child it is alarming. That is how it feels when OCD goes for the one thing your child can’t live without - food.

In this episode of the AT Parenting Survival Podcast I talk about ARFID and OCD. ARFID stands for Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder and OCD likes to partner with it. I open up about my son’s ongoing struggle with restrictive eating, our journey and what steps we have taken to help him.

PSP 216: Helping Kids with Anxiety or OCD Develop Self-Compassion Jun 29, 2021
    Show notes

Kids with anxiety and OCD often struggle with self-love and self-compassion. It is developmentally common for all kids to struggle with self-compassion, but when you have anxiety and OCD it can be even harder.

In this episode of the AT Parenting Survival Podcast I talk with Madina Alam, a Clinical Advisor with NOCD about how we, as parents, can help our kids develop more self-compassion. When kids have more self-compassion, they are also more empowered to work on their issues! So working on this can be powerful.

PSP 214: Interview with Dr. Shefali | Helping Mothers Turn Pain into Power Jun 15, 2021
    Show notes

Dr. Shefali is a prominent clinical psychologist and the New York Times best selling author of The Conscious Parent and The Awakened Family. In her new book, A Radical Awakening, she talks to women abou how to take their pain and turn it into power.

According to Oprah Winfrey, “The world needs to know. Trailblazing. Life-enhancing. [A Radical Awakening is] one of those books you will want to keep on your nightstand.”

In my interview with Dr. Shefali I dive deeper into what it means to be a parent and mother to kids with anxiety and OCD. We talk about how we separate their pain and their journey from our own. We go into how to live our own authentic truth and become free from the burden of living in judgment.
