AT Parenting Survival | Raising Kids with OCD & Anxiety

If you’re raising a child or teen with OCD or anxiety, you’re in the right place.

Parenting a child with OCD can feel confusing, exhausting, and isolating, but you don’t have to figure it out alone. Each week, therapist Natasha Daniels shares practical, evidence-based strategies to help you understand how OCD and anxiety really work, respond in ways that support recovery, and feel more confident as a parent.

Whether your child struggles with contamination OCD, intrusive thoughts, reassurance seeking, perfectionism, moral OCD, social anxiety, panic, school refusal, or other anxiety-related challenges, you’ll learn realistic tools you can use at home right away.

Drawing from more than 20 years of clinical experience and her own journey parenting children with OCD and anxiety, Natasha breaks down complex topics into clear, compassionate guidance that parents can actually apply. Episodes cover OCD treatment, ERP (Exposure and Response Prevention), reducing family accommodation, managing meltdowns, supporting therapy, and navigating everyday challenges with confidence.

Whether you’re newly discovering that your child’s anxiety may actually be OCD, searching for better ways to help, or simply looking for reassurance that you’re not alone, this podcast is here to support you every step of the way.

PSP 213: When You Hit Compassion Fatigue with Your Child’s Anxiety or OCD Jun 08, 2021
    Show notes

None of us signed up to raise a child with anxiety or OCD. It wasn’t what we dreamed of when we poured over all the pregnancy and parenting books. And yet, here we all are, trying to not only survive, but thrive with our kids and their struggles.

What happens when compassion runs dry? What happens when we feel resentful or angry at our kids or the situation?

You are not alone if you’ve experienced those feelings. In fact, to be real, most of us have at one point or another.

In this episode of the AT Parenting Survival Podcast I talk about what parental compassion fatigue is, what the symptoms are and how we can navigate through it.

Does it really matter what theme of anxiety or OCD my child has?

    Yes and no.

There are pitfalls to wearing blinders and only focusing on your child’s anxiety or OCD theme.

However there are also incredible benefits to understanding the various ways anxiety and OCD can show up.

In this episode of the AT Parenting Survival Podcast I will talk about the good, the bad and the ugly related to understanding your child’ anxiety and OCD themes and how to use them to catapult your child’s progress.

PSP 211: Why Anxiety or OCD Therapy is Not Enough for Our Kids May 18, 2021
    Show notes

Many of us think that if only we can find a qualified anxiety or OCD child therapist, all of our child’s struggles would go away.

I wish that were true. I wish that was the case for the children that I have treated and for my own children.

But the truth is, as parents we have a major role in how our children do. Even if they are refusing help, there are things we do that can help or hurt the situation. There are things that we need to do for ourselves as well in order to survive.

In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I talk about what our role is as parents and how it can help our kids.

PSP 210: How to Help Kids with Anxiety or OCD When They are Angry May 11, 2021
    Show notes

Kids with anxiety or OCD aren’t just fearful, often they are angry. Anxiety and OCD can cause kids to rage, meltdown and talk back. It can make them dig their heels in and be oppositional.

But when parents react to those behaviors in “typical” ways, they often hit a brick wall.

    Why?

Because often anxiety and OCD is the undercurrent driving those emotions. So if you don’t address the undercurrent, you're missing a crucial piece of the puzzle.

In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I talk about how to differentiate between developmentally typical anger vs anxiety or OCD triggered anger. I also talk about the counterintuitive approach to take when you know that the anger was caused by your child’s anxiety or OCD.

PSP 209: Helping Anxious Kids Change Teachers or Therapists May 04, 2021
    Show notes

Change is hard on most kids, but it can be especially hard on anxious kids. So what happens when they have to change their teacher or therapist? It can be rough, especially if they were well bonded to the teacher or therapist before the change.

Change offers our kids the ability to practice flexibility and can build their adaptation skills. The question is how to do that - especially when they are devastated by the loss.

In this episode of the AT Parenting Survival Podcast, I talk about some ways to discuss this change with your child to help them transition successfully to a new teacher or therapist.

PSP 207: How to Help Kids Who are Scared of Bugs Apr 20, 2021
    Show notes

Many kids and even adults are scared of bugs. But for some of our kids it goes way beyond that. Perhaps they won’t go outside, won’t go to the park or won’t go swimming because of their fear of insects. Maybe they are worried about taking a shower or a bath or even going to the bathroom.

What are you supposed to do to help your child move through such a debilitating fear of bugs?

In this episode of the AT Parenting Survival Podcast I talk about some of the approaches I take when trying to help a child with their fear of bugs. Hopefully it can help your kids too!

PSP 206: How Self-Esteem Plays a Role in Kids with Anxiety or OCD Apr 13, 2021
    Show notes

Anxiety and OCD will often take a swing at our child’s self-esteem. It can do that with the anxious or intrusive thoughts it bombards them with. It can do that by paralyzing them with fear, as they watch their peers not struggle.

It can also be present alongside anxiety or OCD. It can help pick their anxiety or OCD themes. Social anxiety, perfectionism and Moral OCD all use self-esteem in their arsenal of weapons.

In this podcast, I explore how self-esteem dances with anxiety and OCD. I will highlight what areas to look into and talk about how focusing on your child’s self-esteem will in turn help their battle with anxiety and OCD.

PSP 205: Helping Kids with Anxiety or OCD Cope with Grief or Trauma Apr 06, 2021
    Show notes

It’s hard enough to have anxiety or OCD, but what happens when your child is hit with grief or trauma? It can feel like a muddy, chaotic mess.

Unfortunately life happens and so do tragedies. Our kids are not immune to life happening to them, I wish they were.

Anxiety and OCD are opportunistic. It will feed off the grief and trauma by trying to grow new themes and new compulsions.

Our family has suffered an unthinkable and sudden loss. My children are grieving the loss of their father. That alone would be an insurmountable feat. But they are also quietly fighting off another more subtle battle. The battle of an opportunistic disorder that thrives in chaos and tries to piggyback on any of life’s struggles.

In this episode I talk about how to keep your head above water, while trying to make sure that your child’s anxiety or OCD doesn’t gain momentum.
