AT Parenting Survival | Raising Kids with OCD & Anxiety

If you’re raising a child or teen with OCD or anxiety, you’re in the right place.

Parenting a child with OCD can feel confusing, exhausting, and isolating, but you don’t have to figure it out alone. Each week, therapist Natasha Daniels shares practical, evidence-based strategies to help you understand how OCD and anxiety really work, respond in ways that support recovery, and feel more confident as a parent.

Whether your child struggles with contamination OCD, intrusive thoughts, reassurance seeking, perfectionism, moral OCD, social anxiety, panic, school refusal, or other anxiety-related challenges, you’ll learn realistic tools you can use at home right away.

Drawing from more than 20 years of clinical experience and her own journey parenting children with OCD and anxiety, Natasha breaks down complex topics into clear, compassionate guidance that parents can actually apply. Episodes cover OCD treatment, ERP (Exposure and Response Prevention), reducing family accommodation, managing meltdowns, supporting therapy, and navigating everyday challenges with confidence.

Whether you’re newly discovering that your child’s anxiety may actually be OCD, searching for better ways to help, or simply looking for reassurance that you’re not alone, this podcast is here to support you every step of the way.

In my latest episode of the AT Parenting Survival Podcast I sit down with Alisha to discuss how sensory issues can show up in our kids and what we as parents can do to help them.

Alisha has graciously gifted my audience $50 off her program Rise with Sensory. This is an on-demand video course that will give you all the skills you need to help your child with sensory issues directly.

PSP 329: What to Do When Your Child with OCD or Anxiety Won’t Discuss it Aug 29, 2023
    Show notes

Often parents give up before they even start because their child with OCD or anxiety refuses to talk. It is easy to think there is nothing you can do if you can’t get your child to discuss their anxiety or OCD.

But there is always a place to start, always.

Kids refuse to talk about anxiety or OCD for various issues. Here are some common ones:

-They have a hard time expressing their emotions in general

-They are embarrassed about having anxiety or OCD

-They think you’ll force them to work on their issues

-They don’t fully trust you or your reactions

-They don’t want to burden you or increase your anxiety

-They are worried about what you’ll think

-They have a stereotypical view of these issues which causes shame

So where to start? The first step is to figure out why the shutdown is occurring. Does your child struggle communicating with you in general? Do they have a hard time expressing difficult situations? Or is this specific to just anxiety or OCD struggles?

In this week’s episode of the AT Parenting Survival Podcast we discuss reasons why kids refuse to talk about anxiety or OCD and what to do to help them move forward.

PSP 327: Reducing Inflammation to Improve Mental Health Aug 15, 2023
    Show notes

We are hearing more and more about how inflammation is implicated in many mental health issues including anxiety and OCD. But what does that mean? Are there ways we can see if our child is struggling with inflammation? Are there things we can change in their diet or lifestyle that will reduce inflammation?

I don’t know those answers, but I do know someone who does!

That is why I invited Dr. Ann Kulze, a renowned physician and founder of the Healthy Living School to come and talk to us.

Dr. Ann has been featured on the Dr. Oz show, Oprah and Friends Radio, Time, and WebMD sharing her expertise in this area.

🌸 To get 30% off Dr. Ann’s course, How to Eat to Reduce Inflammation, click here.

    Note from the show:

On the podcast Dr. Ann recommended testing “hsCRP” and “Sed rate”. However, she’s unsure if they have standards for doing the hsCRP in kids and imagines pediatricians would likely say they don’t run hsCRP. Sed rates are not super sensitive but can give some indication of inflammation. A sed rate will only be positive in context of higher levels of inflammation as occurs in context of healing or self-defense.

PSP 326: OCD and Eating Disorders Aug 08, 2023

PSP 325: OCD Recovery and Maintenance with Shaun Flores Aug 01, 2023
    Show notes

Shaun Flores was only a couple of years into his own struggle with OCD when he became an OCD advocate. He quickly became a stronger messenger of hope through his OCD awareness work.

Recently I had Shaun back on the AT Parenting Survival podcast to discuss how his OCD recovery is going, what he does to maintain progress and how the perception of recovery can be part of a bigger issue.

As Shaun discussed his recovery it became apparent how OCD decimated his financial stability, derailed his career path and left him in debt. Despite those issues, Shaun continued to be a shining light for others.

I have created a Go Fund Me account to show Shaun how much the OCD community appreciates him and all the work he has done. The funds will help Shaun find that stable grounding, cover expenses related to his upcoming knee surgery and help him claw out of the financial hole OCD put him in.

🌸 Any amount will show Shaun he is valued. You can donate here.

PSP 323: Raising a Child With Chronic Health Issues and Anxiety or OCD Jul 18, 2023
    Show notes

It can be difficult having a child with both chronic health issues and anxiety or OCD. Often there is a symbiotic relationship between them. Anxiety and OCD can hijack health issues and make them worse. Stress and worry make health issues worse. It is a vicious cycle that some kids struggle to break.

In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I talk about how to help a child with both chronic health issues and anxiety or OCD.

PSP 322: Finding Happiness During Difficult Times Jul 11, 2023
    Show notes

When we are raising kids with anxiety or OCD it can take a toll on our own level of happiness. We can be consumed with fear, overwhelm and the what-ifs of tomorrow.

But our child’s journey with anxiety or OCD is a marathon not a sprint. If we live in crisis mode all of the time we rob ourselves and our family of the joy life can bring.

In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I talk about how to find moments of happiness even during difficult times with your child’s anxiety or OCD (or any difficult time for that matter).
