How Should EdTech Companies Treat Instructional Coaches? Sep 12, 2022
Show notes Welcome to "Ask the Tech Coach," a podcast for Instructional Coaches and Technology Integration Specialists. In this episode of “Ask the Tech Coach,” Jeff and Susan discus the various ways that an Educational Technology Brand should be supporting Instructional Coaches so that they can be successful in implementing that tool or application in the classroom. If you would like to be a part of future podcasts and share your thoughts, please contact the podcast. We would love to have you join the show.

    Question of the Week

Our favorite part of recording a live podcast each week is participating in the great conversations that happen on our live chat, on social media, and in our comments section. This week’s question is: How can a Tech Company best support Instructional Coaches?

    Weekly Topic

    • How can Educational Brands best support Instructional Coaches to have their products and applications be properly used in the classroom?

How can EdTech Brands Support Instructional Coaches?

    • Understand what a Coach is and the role they play in the school district
      • They aren’t teachers … but they are
      • They aren’t administrators … but they are
      • They aren’t decision makers … but they are
      • They don’t control money … but they do
      • They don’t teach students … but they do

    • Speak to Coaches using teacher language … not corporate language
      • It’s an app or a website … it’s not a “solution”
      • Help us understand what the product is going to do and how it is going to save a teacher time.
      • Relationships between vendors and coaches - “Trust, but verify. Relationships with vendor partners and customers are grounded in Performance and Trust, but verifying what you have been told is always an important aspect of purchases and support.” --- Keith Frank, Proven Learning EdTech Sales - Kentucky

    • Provide resources for the coach to share with their teachers so that they don’t have to feel like they need to make their own tutorials.
    • Be active on Social Media
    • Trials and Demos are a great way to help the coach get a feel for the product and how it would help a teacher’s productivity.

    Question of the Week

Our favorite part of recording a live podcast each week is participating in the great conversations that happen on our live chat, on social media, and in our comments section. This week’s question is: Question Topic: How can Caoches support high quality teaching in the classroom?

    Weekly Topic

    • Why are teachers micromanaging their classrooms?
      • Whose fault is it?

    • I might be a micromanager if …
    • Is “non-hover” teaching the same as Flipping your Classroom?
      • Students can learn and take responsibility for their learning
      • Choice-based instruction

    • How do you shift the mindset in the classroom?
    • The importance of relationship building
    • Engagement vs Investment
    • What is Choice-Based Instruction?
    • Should teaching and learning be “hands-off”?

    About our Guest: Miriam Plotinsky

Miriam Plotinsky is an author and instructional specialist who addresses challenges in both teaching and leading across schools with a wide range of differentiated needs. A strong advocate for student-centered learning, she provides coaching and professional development for teachers and administrators. Her first book, Teach More, Hover Less: How to Stop Micromanaging Your Secondary Classroom (W.W. Norton & Company, 2022), is a practical guide to a student-centered instructional approach that removes the necessity of teacher micromanagement. Miriam is widely published in Education Week, Edutopia, ASCD Express, The Teaching Channel, EdSurge, K-12 Talk and Education World. She is also a National Board-Certified Teacher with additional certification in administration and supervision.

About the Book: Teach More, Hover Less

A hover-free classroom starts with a dynamic class community. Our image of a classroom community in secondary education is rapidly evolving. The experience of remote learning during a pandemic has altered our mental picture of students occupying rows of desks with a teacher nearby, closely monitoring their activities. But even when teachers are able to be in physical proximity to their students, the research is clear that students need to be empowered to take ownership of their learning in order to be fully engaged. The question this book explores is: How can teachers step back, stop micromanaging, and allow students more agency? In this engaging guide, instructional specialist Miriam Plotinsky breaks hover-free teaching down into four sequential stages: mindset, deeper relationships, planning for engagement, and choice-based instruction. Her book shows how teachers can free themselves from helicopter habits and allow students greater control of their own learning, while still managing and maximizing classroom time effectively. https://wwnorton.com/books/9781324019879

    Question of the Week

Our favorite part of recording a live podcast each week is participating in the great conversations that happen on our live chat, on social media, and in our comments section. This week’s question is:
    • What do you think district and building leaders should be watching for in tech in the upcoming school year?
    • How should leaders address professional development this year in regards to technology integration?

    Weekly Topic

    • Why is it important to work with your administrator, especially at the beginning of the school year?
      • Coaches are put in school buildings to support teachers in meeting both district and building goals.
      • They are not “spies for the administration” rather they are “certified support professionals” and “content specialists” designed to help classroom teachers develop and deliver dynamic curricular activities to help students meet their standards.

    • How should you approach your principal at the beginning of the school year?
      • Set up a time to meet before the school year starts.
      • Have a meeting set at least twice a month if not weekly to keep in touch of what is happening in the classrooms.

    • When should you approach your principal at the beginning of the school year?
      • Often
      • After the first few days have passed
      • Before the first major staff meeting
        • to set up an opportunity to work with teachers

      • Should building leaders be focused on “Tech”?
        • No – Building leaders should be focused on standards and how students are meting them.
        • Building leaders should be focused on how their students are meeting the standards and how teachers are creating lessons to meet those standards THROUGH the use of digital learning activities.
        • The “Tech” is simply a vehicle for meeting the standards.

      • What is the purpose of Instructional Coaches doing Professional Development?
        • Professional Development should be designed to setup a way to demonstrate how teachers can meet the needs of the principal.
        • Large Group PD should be designed to then lead into discussions and be agenda items in department & grade level PD which then needs to be designed to lead to 1:1 Coaching sessions in classrooms.

      • Advice for Instructional Coaches starting out the new school year.
        • Create meaningful relationships with your administrators.
        • Make sure that all PD sessions are supporting the goals of the building and district. This way you are being “the answer” rather than “just another thing” that teachers have to listen to each week.
        • Use your Newsletter and Website as marketing vehicles to assist you in supporting your principal goals.
