Can Instructional Coaches Save the Teaching Profession? Dec 12, 2022
Show notes Welcome to "Ask the Tech Coach," a podcast for Instructional Coaches and Technology Integration Specialists. In this episode of “Ask the Tech Coach,” Jeff sits down with Donna Gerard to discuss some of the reasons why teachers are leaving the profession. If you would like to be a part of future podcasts and share your thoughts, please contact the podcast. We would love to have you join the show.

    Question of the Week

Our favorite part of recording a live podcast each week is participating in the great conversations that happen on our live chat, on social media, and in our comments section. This week’s question is: Question Topic: Why are so many teachers leaving the classroom?

    Weekly Topic

    1. Why did you want to become a teacher?
    2. What do you want to tell prospective and new teachers?
    3. Why do you think so many teachers are leaving the profession?
    4. How do you think teaching and education in general can be restored?
    5. You make many references to The Powers That Be. What would you like to tell The Powers That Be?

    About our Guest: Donna Gerard

Donna Gerard is a retired teacher turned writer and part-time substitute teacher. She had 34 years of teaching experience, mostly in middle school, and she has taught all subjects. She has experience with general program students, special education, ELL, gifted and talented, and struggling learners. Gerard was a practitioner of basal readers, formal spelling programs, phonics, whole language, call and response, book learning, hands-on learning, multiple intelligences, computer-based learning, individualized instruction, and cooperative learning, to name a few. She drew the conclusion that every trend in education has merit and should be used, but none are the "answer" to how to teach all students or should be used exclusively. Aside from teaching, Gerard loves every kind of water sport, from swimming laps to parasailing and kayaking. She is an avid game player, a die-hard Star Trek fan, and an aspiring world traveler. She lives with her husband and her part-time dog in New Jersey.

About our Guest: Michael Thomas (Senior Learning Digital Analysist)

Michael was born in Burlington, VT and lived there most of his life. Having the opportunity for authentic learning experiences throughout his formative education years he wanted to deliver that to his future students. After completing his education through Johnson State College with a degree in Education he began his work in education as a paraprofessional and sports coach. After a few years of teaching, coaching soccer & basketball, he moved to Massachusetts and began a new phase as a head teacher in fifth grade. He spent time at two different schools in Springfield, one with a charter model and one with a more traditional model. During those seven years he learned and honed his technology skills such as utilizing a learning management system, using technology to create authentic learning opportunities and learning how to use technology to create actionable steps for student learning after assessments. Eventually, Michael was promoted within the district to his current position. Mike is a huge proponent of using technology in education and a firm believer in the flipped classroom and blended learning models of teaching. His time teaching led him to discover his real passion in education, helping teachers understand the benefits of technology in the classroom. During his free time, he enjoys spending time with his wife and three children, watching movies, brewing beer, playing bass and creating things with his hands.

    Question of the Week

Our favorite part of recording a live podcast each week is participating in the great conversations that happen on our live chat, on social media, and in our comments section. This week’s question is: Question Topic: How can I be more productive with my teachers ... by doing just a bit less than I am already doing?

    Weekly Topic

    • What is a “Minimalist Classroom?”
      • Do Less … Better

    • How to declutter your:
      • Physical environment
      • Curriculum

    • How can we help our classrooms stay focused on the important aspects of day to day activities?
    • What is the Triple P Cycle?
    • Advice for Instructional Coaches supporting teachers in multiple buildings when they also have an extremely cluttered life

The importance of bringing principles of lifestyles that create calm and applicability to schools. Sharing ideas about how we began this work is helpful for educators to know and how we try to live these ideas in our lives as educators.

    About our Guests

    Tammy Musiowsky-Borneman

Tammy Musiowsky-Borneman has been in the field of education for over 20 years, working primarily with elementary school students and teachers. She currently works at Kokua Academy in Kona, Hawai’i as the school’s Head of Teaching & Learning. She is the founder of Plan Z Professional Learning Services and an ASCD author. Over the years, Tammy has also taught and led inHawai'i, Singapore, New York City, and Edmonton, Canada. She is the Executive Director of the Emerging Leader Alumni Affiliate and has co-authored the ASCD book, The Minimalist Teacher. She has also written several guest blogs for ASCD Inservice, Express, and EdWeek Teacher blog on topics such as minimalism in teaching, creating cultures of learning, student engagement, inclusivity, and student agency. Follow her on Twitter @TMus_Ed.

    About Planzplservices

Tammy Musiowsky-Borneman and Christine Arnold have developed a way to bring a minimalist mindset to the classroom and shed the burden of too many initiatives, strategies, and "things" in general. Their Triple P process helps teachers declutter in three steps: identify something's purpose, prioritize what is important, and pare down to essentials. Because the Triple P process emphasizes structured and candid self-reflection to determine what is essential, meaningful, and useful—and then discard what is extraneous—The Minimalist Teacher can be adapted to the physical classroom environment, curriculum, instruction, assessment, and more. Each chapter provides sample reflection questions and brainstorming activities to help teachers
    • Reduce mental and physical waste.
    • Manage burnout and stress.
    • Advocate for minimalism in the school.
    • Prioritize resources that best support student learning.

Teachers face countless decisions every day, few of which are easy, but they don’t have to be overwhelming. No matter the classroom, you can take control of your daily decisions in a way that reduces educator stress and builds a better learning environment for students.
