    Show notes

A day in the life of a nurse can involve long hours of standing, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling heavy items from point A to point B, which can cause stress on our legs and feet. To avoid work-related health and feet problems, it's important that nurses take proper care of their feet. And while we're thinking about our own feet, let's not forget those of our patients. They may not come in for primary foot issues but the legs and feet can tell you a lot about your patient's health status. Do they hurt? Are they cold? Do they have numbness or tingling? Are they discolored? Are they swollen? Are the toenail beds pale, discolored, or thick? A patient's feet may give you important information you need to properly take care of your patient as a whole.

In this episode Nurse Alice speaks with Dr. Ebonie is a licensed podiatrist aka foot and ankle surgeon behind the hit TLC television series “My Feet Are Killing Me.” She works with all types of foot and ankle ailments with a specialty in foot and ankle reconstruction and diabetic limb salvage.

Medical Marijuana: How To Educate & Empower Patients (with Ashley Wynn-Grimes BSN, RN, Founder of Cannabis Nursing Solutions, LLC) Mar 14, 2022
    Show notes

Medical marijuana has been a hot topic for several years. First legalized in California in 1996, now more than two-thirds of U.S. states and the District of Columbia have legalized it for medical treatments and more are considering bills to do the same. Then in 2012 Colorado and Washington became the first two states to legalize it for recreational use, and in a similar fashion, while only 18 states currently approve it recreationally, other states are expected to do the same.

But sadly healthcare has not done a great job with educating our healthcare professionals with this changing policy. How many of us fully understand the benefits and risks of cannabis? How is it consumed? How is it dosed? How does it work? What are the side effects? When should it be added to the care plan? And even for our patients using it recreationally and even sometimes illegally - how do we educate people around usage to keep them safe?

In this episode Nurse Alice speaks with Ashley Wynn-Grimes BSN, RN is the Founder of Cannabis Nursing Solutions, LLC, Executive Director Of Cannabis Patient Advocacy Association. Wynn-Grimes, a registered nurse for more than 12 years, is dedicated to empowering patients and nursing professionals to make informed medical cannabis care choices with impactful educational medical programs that also serve to promote diverse representation and medical equality in cannabis.

The State of Nursing report Mar 10, 2022
    Show notes

If the past two years have taught the world anything, it's that nurses are not okay. Nurses are burned out, many leaving the profession and for several reasons including having to work short-staffed in stressful, demanding, and hazardous conditions while being underpaid, undervalued, and overworked often at the risk of their own physical and mental health being. So of course the nursing shortage (which in fact existed well before COVID) has now been exacerbated and accelerated. So now what???

In this episode Nurse Alice shares, some of the findings of the "This is the State of Nursing" Report by Nurse.org where nearly 1,500 nurses were surveyed to find out how they felt about the past year and to get the real reasons behind the nursing shortage. They were asked about the real issues they are facing every day during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Why did we do a survey? To capture qualitative and quantitative data to better understand the current state of the nursing workforce. If we want to resolve the nursing shortage, we need to fully understand the systemic and underlying issues and work with hospital leadership, nursing allies, and politicians to create solutions that address the issues plaguing the profession.

For some women after breast cancer and mastectomy, it can leave them feeling a void and having a desire to restore their natural-looking breasts. In this episode Nurse Alice speaks with Jasmine Jones, founder of Myya, the first direct to consumer, insurance-billable, and inclusive intimates/prosthetics brand for anyone post-mastectomy. Inspired by her grandmother's battle with breast cancer and limited mastectomy care, Jasmine launched Myya during Breast Cancer Awareness Month with the goal to upend traditional healthcare’s approach to post-mastectomy care by adding a fresh perspective to an antiquated industry and breaking down stigmas around mastectomy care in the process.
