Karen Hinton Talks P*nis Politics Jan 20, 2022

Show notes

P*nis Politics: A Memoir of Women, Men And Power by Karen Hinton, a journalist and former press secretary to Andrew Cuomo and later to New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio, offers an insider’s view of what it’s like to be a woman in the newsroom, the halls of Congress and the highest reaches of American political power. The book is available on amazon.com.
Hinton’s memoir expands on her widely-read New York Daily News op-ed coining the term “p*nis politics” to describe how powerful men assert control over women in a vulnerable or subordinate position and the extensive media attention Hinton received over her revelations of Andrew Cuomo’s sexual politics.
Throughout the book, Hinton writes about the small, everyday abuses that some men use to magnify their power at home, in school, and in the office. She shows how penis politics negatively impacts girls and women’s view of themselves and their options in life, saying that women are “damned if you speak up and damned if you shut up.”
Known for never ducking a fight, Hinton was at the peak of her career in 2018 when a catastrophic brain injury propelled her into the battle of her life. Emerging from a coma, learning to walk, talk and write again, she was determined to “speak up, not shut up” on issues involving women, men and power.
In P*nis Politics, Hinton writes of the toxic brew of ego, entitlement, and “bro-culture” that
is especially difficult for women to navigate in politics. She reveals how certain well-known men create a public image as champions of women’s rights and equality, but behind closed doors, they use gender domination to assert their authority.
With unflinching candor, Hinton discusses the sexual trauma that affected her and her close-knit group of girlfriends in rural Mississippi in the 1970s. She goes on to describe her career as a journalist and then a political operative and press secretary, evading Bill Clinton’s humiliating pickup attempt; maneuvering a tumultuous relationship with Southern writer Willie Morris; dragging highly-acclaimed author Bill Styron dead drunk out of her VW bug; and ultimately struggling with her headline-grabbing confrontations with former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio.
“I learned lessons in penis politics throughout my life from my interactions with high school coaches and principals, boyfriends, college professors, newspaper editors, lovers, and politicians,” Hinton explains. “Along the way, I struggled to master strategies for dealing with men of power that many women will recognize from their own lives. While the details of their stories may vary from mine, what remains consistent are the ways in which misogyny, sex and discrimination shape how girls and women view themselves and their options.”
Ultimately, what women want is to be treated with respect in their daily lives and as professionals in their work. Hinton’s goal with P*nis Politics is to help change the way we treat each other. The book is an outspoken appeal to moving us in the right direction and a wake-up call for men to support the women in their lives.

The Josie’s Best Gluten Free Story Jan 18, 2022

Show notes

What began in our kitchen as a way for our family to enjoy the breakfast foods we loved so much has grown to include an incredible family of customers all re-discovering their favorite foods minus the ingredients they can’t eat.
Josie’s Best Gluten Free is bringing breakfast back.
Web: https://josiesbestgf.com
Follow: @josiesbestgf
For the sleeves rolled up, flour on the nose messes that are the beginning of lifelong memories. We’re there on Sundays when you want to pile the pancakes higher than little hands can reach them. Or when you’ve declared “breakfast for dinner” and, somehow, it’s the best night of the week. Josie’s Best Gluten Free is there for all the moments you should never miss out on because of a food allergy.
From her childhood watching her culinary father whip up breakfasts, Josie has always appreciated good food—especially if that food was fluffy, round, and drizzled with syrup. When she was diagnosed with food allergies in her 20s, she set out to find a pancake mix that could stand up to her cravings. When she couldn’t find it on the market, she spent hours in her kitchen tinkering with ingredients and measurements until she created what we now simply call “the pancake.” From there, we’ve grown Josie’s Best Gluten Free to include the waffle, the muffin & more, and the crepe.
What started as a personal mission has grown into a larger one—to bring back breakfast for everyone.
Today, our customers are revived breakfast enthusiasts, home bakers, and well-loved restaurants looking to provide delicious options for all. And, just like a plate of pancakes or fresh-baked bread, Josie’s is best served with warm smiles and a side of family connection.

Life’s many obstacles can throw anyone into a tailspin that feels uncontrollable. Ultimately, everyone is searching for acceptance and joy. If you search for that acceptance and joy by living by the book when it comes to religion, your search for hope can be filled with frustration. Instead, live a life of purpose built on the principles that unite us all: love.
Conquering an undiagnosed disability, Armed Forces veteran Juan Lee studied religion for over 30 years. The truth he uncovered: Everyone is ultimately searching for acceptance and joy. Love Made Simple: A Guide to Inner Peace, Contentment, and Success is an earnest look into what it means to be part of humanity and live with love guiding your way. Look at success with new eyes and awareness to accomplish any goal before you.
Juan Lee is an author and teacher on the powerful principle of love. For over 30 years, he has studied organized religion to find the elements that unite humanity and share the message with those who need it. Raised within the Christian church, Juan has turned to teachings about love over the years to find strength, understanding and hope.
As a child, Juan was the youngest of four children raised by a single father. Juan struggled with an undiagnosed learning disability that made school difficult. While being constantly compared to others, he was unable to identify his strengths. Juan’s low self-esteem and fear took away his hope for life. He joined the US Air Force out of high school in hopes just to survive.
Juan received multiple merits during his time in the military, including the Air Force Commendation Medal, the Air Force Achievement Medal, the Air Force Good Conduct Medal, and the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award. He found new confidence in service but could not separate himself from his disability. During his time in the Air Force, Juan committed his life to Christianity and sought to utilize the principle of love in his life.
Juan is a devoted husband and lives outside of Washington, DC. He has a desire to share what he has learned over the years with others and be an agent of love for humanity.
