The Story
Leslie’s life wasn’t always filled with health and vibrance. At the tender age 13, young and curious Leslie started experimenting with a variety of recreational substances such as marijuana and alcohol. Unfortunately for Leslie, her envoy in drugs quickly escalated into more alarming territories, eventually diving into more dangerous concoctions such as cocaine. Though she stayed sober for a while, the craving for drugs proved to be too much eventually leading her to relapse.
After hitting rock bottom, her father came to her aid, looking for treatment which led her to the NJ Alina Lodge where she sought treatment for her addiction. At the age of 20, she attended a short-term, 30-day, in-patient treatment, but was eventually moved to a long-term 3-month stay in the facility. She ended up staying in the facility for 11 months, soon moving on to a halfway house for 6 more months to help her bounce back and readjust to everyday life. Following her journey toward rehabilitation, she stayed for one last year in New Jersey, eventually coming back to Atlanta. Since then, she has been completely sober.
During her path to recovery, Leslie discovered the many benefits of juicing and having a plant-based lifestyle firsthand from her mother and witnessed her mom building Arden’s Garden. After years of following the footsteps and influence of her mother, Arden’s Garden was passed on to Leslie, letting her manage the business and continue operating as an oasis of health in food deserts. Now she has her own family to nurture and care for. Following a healthy lifestyle, she gave birth to 4 beautiful children later in her life, without any need for medical intervention.
Similar to her mother, Arden, Leslie continues to positively influence her family to share a passion for fitness and nutrition. Her daughter, Delaney, also had personal struggles with health, afflicted with morbid obesity. Inspired by her mother and grandmother, Delaney also found a passion for sports, fitness and has already adopted a plant-based lifestyle. Since finding her way back to health, she’s lost over 150 pounds and is still on the road to becoming more fit.

Susannah Marren Talks Maribelle’s Shadow Jun 28, 2023

Once again from the excess and folly of Palm Beach society, the novelist Susannah Marren has woven an intricate tapestry of secrets and foreboding.
The third volume in her trilogy about the Florida haunt for the wealthy and famous, Maribelle’s Shadow comes to life with biting dialogue and the inner monologues of three sisters who are at cross-purposes with each other and their elegant, imperialistic mother. The Barrows women just can’t shake their personas and the place they came from.
“While arriving in Palm Beach with an amorphous past was common,” Marren writes, “the revelation of a backwater story was not.” It is there, in that backwater story, that the truth about the Barrows begins. Their Florida Panhandle existence — ordinary lives launched into the stratosphere by a wildly successful chain of coffee shops — had been transformed Cinderella-like two decades earlier.

Mysterious Death Shakes Family Secrets Loose
Sisters Maribelle, Caroline, and Raleigh would like to keep that story hidden. With their mother Lucinda, once a modest schoolteacher and now a showpiece, they have a lot on the line.
Outside their doors lies the Intracoastal Waterway with its docks, boats, and tropical gardens. Inside their homes, “vast decorated spaces,” the 30-ish sisters argue with their husbands, host parties, and cultivate their children. This is learned behavior that could be passed on for generations: “always rushing toward what’s next and better,” as Marren describes it.
Yet within the first 14 pages of Maribelle’s Shadow, the family’s veneer is ripped off. Back home from yoga, Mirabelle learns that Samuel, her philandering husband, is dead. Two hours earlier he had insisted on driving his speedboat to work. The sunny day suddenly turned stormy and somehow the expert pilot lost control.
As the Chief Financial Officer of the Barrows Corporation, Samuel had grown the company’s bottom line through business expansion and retail innovation. Working alongside his longtime friend and business partner, Caroline’s husband Travis, Samuel seemed devoted to Barrows. He even tolerated his intrusive mother-in-law.
However, much to the anger and puzzlement of Lucinda and the three sisters, it appears that Samuel absconded with several million of the company’s profits. In disbelief, Maribelle wishes that Samuel were alive to explain what happened even though she loathes him more each day he is gone. Meanwhile, Lucinda hires a forensic accountant to plumb the books.
Reflexively, Maribelle returns to her prestigious job, managing editor of PB Confidential, a glossy magazine that is her baby. Here she can lose herself working with the staff writers and Holly, the publisher, as they continually tinker with content and design.
But during lunch at the Breakers with Holly, Maribelle is shocked to learn that a decision has been made to move the magazine entirely online. That is not all. Holly confides an important fact about PB Confidential. Suffice it to say that this revelation creates in Maribelle a sensation “somewhere between shortness of breath and someone stomping on her heart,” Marren writes.
Well-Plotted With a Keen Eye for Detail
Among the joys of Susannah Marren’s novels is her eye for detail. “Cantaloupe leather bar stools and cognac wood accents” and “the ice grey rooms that led into one another” immediately transport the reader to the homogenous interiors inhabited by—what can one say? —the insincere socialites she portrays so well.
Marren captures equally well the world outside those rooms: the blues and greys of the ocean and sky, the churning waves and rustling banyan trees; everything dependent on quicksilver weather. This affinity with Palm Beach is akin to Joan Didion’s romance with California, her evocation of the Santa Ana winds and the arrival of rain in “a place in which a boom mentality and a sense of Chekhovian loss meet in uneasy suspension.”
Maribelle’s Shadow is a beautiful, unforgettable book.

Does anyone really need another social media app? Jeff Gillis, founder of the Winelikes, argues that anyone who loves wine or wants to learn about it must download this one. Here are a few things that make Winelikes different:
Winelikes is all wine. That means there is less clutter and fewer irrelevant posts to wade through.
Winelikes doesn’t use algorithms or AI to push sponsored posts at people. When an individual logs into the app, they actually see their friends’ content, not something a computer or advertiser thinks they’ll like.
The app is designed to help people who are new to wine learn about it in a fun and non-threatening environment. New users take a palate quiz to begin developing their preferences. There are numerous other quizzes designed to aid people interested in learning about different aspects of wine — and take some of the intimidation and tedium out of solo study.
Winelikes provides a non-judgmental environment for exploring and experimenting with wine. The site will never tell a user that they “should” or “shouldn’t” like anything.
Some apps are designed to get the user hooked on a screen. Winelikes focuses on connecting people for real-life experiences. People can use the app to learn about wine destinations they’d like to visit and arrange meetups with folks at local restaurants, bars, wineries and other destinations.
Since wine and food so often go together, there is a feature designed to help people determine what foods and wines might pair well, as well as a place to save food/beverage combinations that users enjoyed.

11-year-old Cancer Survivor Talks SHE WARRIOR Jun 19, 2023

11-year-old Toronto-based author Siena (Sisi) Kleiner-Fisman details her harrowing but inspirational experience as a long-term cancer survivor with her impactful new book for adults and children alike, “She-Warrior” — available now.

When Sisi was three years-old, she was diagnosed with a rare cancer. Initially, the weight of it all made her sad and angry at being sick and missing out on all the fun of summer. However, when Sisi and her parents traveled to Philadelphia, PA, to receive life-saving radiation, Sisi made new friends and had all sorts of adventures exploring a new city.
Facing her demons head-on with optimism and a relentless spirit, Sisi chronicles her life-changing journey with “She-Warrior”. As Sisi puts it, “Being diagnosed with cancer as a small child, getting through treatment, and now being a long-term survivor is a unique experience.”
What follows is an excerpt from “She-Warrior” detailing one of Sisi’s first doctor’s visits:
“The doctors needed a sample of the cancer (“earth-monster” to Sisi). They wanted to look at it under the microscope to make sure it really was Rhabdomyosarcoma and not some other monster and to help decide which medicine Sisi would need. Sisi actually called the “earth-monster” “Toots” after watching a cartoon episode about a funny little germ named “Toots.”
Years after her cancer ordeal, she woke up one morning with an epiphany. Sisi realized she had an extraordinary story that had to be told. She decided to write this book to help other kids cope with childhood cancer and inspire them to remain hopeful in their journeys and to know that they are not alone.
“Even though my days were filled with uncertainty and fear, with the help of my doctors, nurses, and my mom, I never lost hope, and eventually, I recovered,” says Sisi.
“I decided that telling my story could have such a huge impact on kids who are going through tough times with cancer as I did and telling them my story might help them have hope that they too will get better.”
This story, written by Sisi when she was 11-years-old, will delight children, teens, and adults alike. Featuring original art by Sisi, “She-Warrior” is the true story of an inspiring little girl with a big personality who navigates adversity with humour and resilience. Sis’s debut book is written with a youthful spirit capturing the optimism and resilience of childhood.
Sisi Kleiner-Fisman lives in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, where she is a grade 5 student. She loves singing, dancing, performing in musical theatre, drawing and painting, and spending time with her friends and family.
While Sisi still has some hurdles to conquer due to the effects of radiation, she plans to be a child psychologist. Sisi says “I want to help kids cope with their feelings and anxieties because I know what it's like”. She will impact others, knowing what it is like to be vulnerable and in need of support and encouragement.

“The advice applies equally well to small or large corporations and to entrepreneurial ventures,” he said, adding, “The book was inspired by a request for advice from my daughter on how to be identified as a high potential employee and advance her career as she languished in an entry-level position at her large global company. The advice proved to be very effective as she was rapidly promoted into positions with greater levels of responsibility.”

Sievert drew upon his unique combination of experiences as a Christian executive, a mentor and a college instructor to develop a book packed with practical Christ-centered advice for those wishing to add a spiritual dimension to career pursuits.
“During my career, and afterward, I mentored many young employees and executives
— at least 10 of whom went on to become presidents or CEOs of their organizations,” Sievert explained.
Ultimately, Sievert hopes to show others the value of nurturing a symbiotic relationship between faith and career.
“Since most of us will spend more than half of our waking hours at work, I really felt it was important to talk about ways in which you can bring and follow biblical principles in the workplace, and at the same time, get some really valuable business tips from a guy who’s been there,” he added.
