Artist Friendly with Joel Madden

Latest Episodes:

DJ Paul of Three 6 Mafia Oct 18, 2023

Show notes

This week on Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by DJ Paul, a founding member of hip-hop luminaries Three 6 Mafia.

The Memphis collective broke ground when they released their debut album, Mystic Stylez, in 1995. That LP became a landmark, particularly for the underground, with its foreboding cover and love for the occult.

After following it up with two more dark records, 1996’s Da End and 1997’s Chapter 2: World Domination, it became clear that Three 6 Mafia were creating a remarkable legacy.

Fast-forward two decades and DJ Paul has become involved in other endeavors, from his record label Scale-A-Ton Entertainment to the fashion line Dangerus / Skandulus.

Mike Herrera & Tom Wisniewski of MxPx Sep 20, 2023

Show notes

Listen as Joel Madden is joined by Mike Herrera and Tom Wisniewski of MxPx.

MxPx are still riding high from the release of their 11th studio album, Find A Way Home, which reflects on the passing of time, mistakes made, and feeling like a failure.

“I just hope that the music hits in a way that either makes them happy [or] just gives them some entertainment,” Herrera told AP last month. “We do this for people to have something in their lives, not just today. Everything these days online really seems fleeting. But songs — good songs — aren’t. Something can stay with you years from now — that’s what makes it so worth it for us to put so much work into the songs.”

Benji and Joel Madden Sep 13, 2023

Show notes

In a conversation with Alternative Press Editor in Chief Anna Zanes, Benji and Joel Madden reflect on the different eras of Good Charlotte — and what has allowed them to create enduring businesses, as well as maintain longevity as musicians.

“I think that the idea that always comes to my mind about everything that we do or have done — the theme of what injured us, what we thought was our weakness, what our trauma was — always ends up being our strength,” Joel says of the band.

Check out the Fall 2023 issue of Alternative Press for this episode's companion cover story. This issue also comes with three alternate collectible covers featuring Scowl, Yves Tumor and Poppy, as well as stories on Jean Dawson, Shapel Lacy and Toby Morse, Genesis Owusu, and more.

Royal & the Serpent Sep 06, 2023

Show notes

Royal & the Serpent joins Joel Madden on the latest episode of Artist Friendly.

The last couple of years have been massive for Royal. From collaborating with Sleeping With Sirens on Complete Collapse, to touring with Fall Out Boy and Demi Lovato (as well as appearing on HOLY FVCK), she’s also been sharing plenty of her own music.

This year, she followed up her heady Happiness Is An Inside Job EP with a series of dual singles, dubbed the RAT TRAP saga. If anything, Royal is always in motion, particularly as she prepares to head out on her first-ever headline tour, kicking off 10/14 in Phoenix.

Phillip Frankland Lee Aug 23, 2023

Show notes

Chef Phillip Frankland Lee joins Joel Madden on the latest episode of Artist Friendly.

Before Lee was a celebrated chef, he served as the drummer in the rock outfit Alpha and Omega. His love of food, however, took over.

His first experience in the culinary world was as a dishwasher, moving into different positions over time until he opened his own restaurant, Scratch, in 2013. Scatch is just as its name suggests, serving up imaginative dishes that focus on “the purity and experience of food.”

Lee has also appeared on several cooking shows, beating out challengers on Chopped, Guy’s Grocery Games, and Cutthroat Kitchen, as well as competing on Top Chef season 13.
