Having just released their 10th studio album, Devourer, which represents “personal imperialism and the imperialism of relationships,” the band will support their Omaha peers Bright Eyes on tour in April.

In a conversation with Madden, the Nebraska-born indie rocker delves into his love of directing, the steady growth of the band’s near 30-year career, and Devourer.

Brandon Saller of Atreyu Nov 13, 2024

Show notes

On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by Brandon Saller of Atreyu.

Over the past year, the Orange County metalcore vets have stayed furiously busy. In 2022, they put out an EP trilogy that began with The Hope of a Spark and continued with The Moment You Find Your Flame and A Torch In The Dark.

Those releases culminated in the band’s heavy but reflective ninth studio album, The Beautiful Dark of Life.

Then, earlier this year, Atreyu unleashed The Pronoia Sessions — a 10-song collection that takes eight of their hits “to a whole new place” and features a pair of covers (Audioslave and Tom Petty).

24kGoldn Nov 06, 2024

Show notes

On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by 24kGoldn.

24kGoldn became a huge name after going viral on TikTok with “VALENTINO” in 2019. Since blowing up, the rapper has worked with several heavyweights, including Quavo, Mötley Crüe’s Tommy Lee, and Future (the latter of whom appeared on his debut album, 2021’s El Dorado).

This year only got bigger, as 24kGoldn shared his introspective Growing Pains EP and is currently on tour with Chase Atlantic in support of their new album, LOST IN HEAVEN.

In a conversation with Madden, he opens up about manifesting, navigating the release of a hit single during COVID-19, and how chasing success can dilute artistry.

Ryan Ashley Oct 30, 2024

Show notes

On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by Ryan Ashley.

Though Ashley dreamed of becoming a tattoo artist as a teenager, she didn’t think it was realistic and became a fashion designer instead. Specializing in beads and lace, she ultimately used that eye for detail and deep understanding of tattoo culture to win Ink Master season 8 in 2016.

Since winning in 2016, she’s gone on to appear in spin-offs and other seasons, including serving as a judge on season 16 of Ink Master, which is airing now.

In a conversation with her co-star, Ashley reflects on her most meaningful tattoo, the challenges of being a working mom, and behind-the-scenes stories from the Ink Master set.

Show notes

Jefferson is a storied photographer within punk and alternative spaces. From his work in the revered skateboarding magazine Thrasher and being a staff photographer for the Los Angeles Lakers to shooting AP’s WILLOW cover in 2021, Jefferson embodies the culture.

“I am still always inspired by so much new skateboarding and photography,” he told AP, but whether he’s unveiling collaborations with Supreme or Modernica, music remains in the foreground.

During his conversation with Madden, Jefferson digs into his beginnings in the skateboarding world, capturing everyone from Playboi Carti to Tyler, the Creator, and his biggest inspiration.

DPR IAN Oct 23, 2024

Show notes

On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by DPR IAN.

Christian Yu began making music under the moniker DPR IAN in late 2015 as one of the founding members of Seoul’s DPR (“Dream Perfect Regime”) collective, which creates, directs, produces, and edits various multimedia projects for its roster.

Having put out two EPs in the last couple of years, DPR IAN has transformed into an unpredictable solo artist whose work blurs together pop, R&B, rock, and electronica with painstaking attention to detail.

In a conversation with Madden, the Australian singer, rapper, and director dives into building new versions of yourself, tattoos as intimate memories, and his current THE DREAM REBORN tour.

Dexter Holland of The Offspring Oct 09, 2024

Show notes

On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by Dexter Holland of The Offspring.

The Offspring have been kicking around for four decades, but the band are celebrating a major milestone this year — the 30th anniversary of their mainstream triumph Smash, which remains the biggest-selling rock album released on an indie label.

In a similar vein as Dookie, punk purists disregarded the band when they signed to Columbia following its release, but they’ve only grown in stature over the years.

Now, the Orange County vets are readying their 11th studio album, Supercharged (out Oct. 11), which was produced by Bob Rock and continues their streak of writing punk hits.
