    Episode 619 - The Partey partner Mar 26, 2021
    Show notes

In this episode I'm joined by James Benge and Clive Palmer to discuss a host of topics, including the demands being placed on players going on international duty, and whether there can ever be the right balance; fixture schedules; Martin Odegaard's growing influence on the team; Thomas Partey, what he might bring between now and the end of the season, as well as the need to find him the right partner; progress under Mikel Arteta but weighed up against the flaws which are on display too often; and more.

    Arsecast Extra Episode 406 - 22.03.2021 Mar 22, 2021
    Show notes

In this episode, we try and make sense of yesterday's extraordinary 3-3 draw with West Ham. We chat about the vast chasm between how bad we can be and how good we can be, the goals we conceded, the incredible response to coming back from 3-0 down, the influence of Martin Odegaard, Calum Chambers and Alexandre Lacazette, how both sides could have won it, and how the things we're doing well are consistently being undermined by the stuff we do badly. Then there are listener questions about centre-halves, keeping Odegaard, Bernd Leno's recent form, the great striker debate and lots more.

    Episode 618 - Coke off what?! Mar 19, 2021
    Show notes

In this episode Arsenal's 1-0 defeat to Olympiacos is made less painful by the hilarity of Sp*rs getting knocked out of the Europa League despite taking a two goal lead into their second leg. After laughing at that, we talk about our game, Mikel Arteta's post-game bug bear, Aubameyang's misses, Martin Odegaard, a sighting of the lesser-spotted Gabriel Martinelli, Kieran Tierney, the ridiculous upcoming Interlull and lots more.

    Arsecast Extra Episode 405 - 15.03.2021 Mar 15, 2021
    Show notes

In this episode, it's a very goodly morning as we revel in the 2-1 win in the North London derby. After falling behind to a sheer fluke of a goal, Martin Odegaard equalised and Alexandre Lacazette's second half penalty secured the points. We chat about the collective performance, some very good individual ones, the absence of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, the terrifying final 10 minutes, the red card , Harry Kane's nasty challenge, but most of all enjoy an important win over the old rivals and beating their manager too. Then we have questions about Kieran Tierney, players shouting at each, Emile Smith Rowe, trying to make Odegaard's signing permanent, Gabriel Martinelli and loads more.

Arsenal's 3-1 win over Olympiacos in the Europa League was a great result, with three brilliant away goals, yet why did Mikel Arteta have a face like thunder afterwards? Could it because we gave away another stupid goal? Yes, yes it was. We discuss this damaging habit we need to shake off as quickly as possible, before we chat about the positives from the night – including starting the game well, scoring goals, and finishing strongly. We also answer listener questions about Nicolas Pepe, the concept of what is good, how to approach the North London derby on Sunday, rotational fouling in football, and lots more.

    Arsecast Extra Episode 403 - 08.03.2021 Mar 08, 2021
    Show notes

In this episode we discuss the 1-1 draw with Burnley on Saturday. After a strong start Arsenal failed to make the most of their dominance, and a Granit Xhaka error saw the home side equalise. We analyse that mistake, how it impacted the performance, and chat about a game that we should won even aside from that. There were missed chances, a ridiculous VAR decisions which cost us a penalty, and it all added up to a frustrating afternoon for Mikel Arteta's side. Then there are questions about the way the team is playing, the manager and his development, Nicolas Pepe, playing out from the back and lots more.

In this episode we enjoy what was a very nice surprise – a 3-1 win over Leicester. Given the team rotation, with six changes, and some big names not starting, it looked more difficult on paper, and even more so when we conceded another early goal. However, the Arsenal response was excellent, and we chat about the goals we scored, a set-piece routine working, VAR, an influential performance from Nicolas Pepe, Willian playing well, and how well we controlled a game against opposition which have often been troublesome to us. Then there are questions about Pablo Mari, head injuries, Gabriel Martinelli, finishing in the top 6, the durability of Granit Xhaka and lots more.

Episode 617 - Saka gets us out of our own jail Feb 26, 2021
    Show notes

On this episode I'm joined by Ryan Hunn and Andrew Allen to discuss our last-gasp 3-2 win over Benfica in the Europa League. As Arsenal are wont to do, we made life very difficult for ourselves, and we discuss our self-destructive tendencies, on display for both Benfica's goals on Thursday evening. We then chat the two goals for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, two assists for Bukayo Saka, that Kieran Tierney goal and the reminders of Bacary Sagna from it, the Willian 'assist' and how much of this was Arsenal getting out of a jail of our own making, and how much was it a win showing kind of character we can build on.

    Arsecast Extra Episode 401 - 22.02.2021 Feb 22, 2021
    Show notes

In this episode we look back on the 1-0 defeat to Man City on Sunday. Losing to a team as good as that isn't a surprise, but we explore the sense of frustration afterwards and what else might be informing it. We chat about the team selection, Mikel Arteta's changes, and the early lapse in concentration which cost us the goal that won City the game. Also on the agenda: substitutes, why games against Man City are so weird, and a tired looking Kieran Tierney, plus lots of listener questions about squad rotation, Bukayo Saka playing 90 minutes again, Gabriel Martinelli, Pep's post-game comments, the importance of the Benfica game on Thursday and lots more.
