    Allyship in Action

I left Corporate America because the workplace culture sucked.

That realization was my personal pivot point, and it’s the entire driving force behind my podcast, Allyship in Action.

Inclusive workplace culture doesn’t happen by accident. It is built through intentional, consistent choices. In every episode of Allyship in Action, my goal is simple. My goal is to cut through the noise, skip the performative shiny stuff, and deliver real, practical tools that turn good intentions into sustainable workplace culture change.

Here is the core summary of what Allyship in Action is all about, and how all leaders can be better allies.

From Performative Statements to Everyday Practice

We’ve all seen standard corporate declarations like posting a statement on social media or making a grand pledge. While public support isn’t inherently bad, true allyship begins when the cameras are off. Allyship isn’t a badge you wear or a title you give yourself. Allyship is a verb. It requires continuous learning, unlearning, and showing up even when things get messy or uncomfortable.

In our conversations with workplace culture experts, we repeatedly unpack how real allies move from passive empathy to proactive intervention. That means noticing who gets interrupted in meetings, recognizing whose ideas are credited, and ensuring that opportunities are distributed equitably across the entire team.

Rewiring Workplace Culture for True Inclusion

A healthy workplace culture isn’t created by ping-pong tables or free snacks. Inclusive workplace cultures are built on psychological safety, fairness, and trust. For genuine inclusion to take root, organizations must audit the subtle systems that drive daily behavior. How are your meetings structured? How are performance reviews conducted? Who holds the informal power, and how is feedback delivered?

On the podcast, we showcase practical tactics—like rotating an Inclusion Booster role during weekly staff meetings to monitor airtime and ensure introverted or underrepresented voices are heard. When you design everyday workflows with inclusion in mind, you stop relying on heroic individual acts and start embedding equity into the DNA of your organization.

Protecting the Pipeline and How Inclusion Drives Talent Retention

There is both a deep human case and a rock-solid business case for DEI. In today’s shifting marketplace, talent retention is one of the single biggest operational challenges leaders face. High performers, especially women, racially diverse team members, neurodivergent colleagues, and Gen Z workers, simply will not stay where they have to mask their true selves or fight uphill against systemic microaggressions.

When employees feel seen, heard, and valued for their unique lived experiences, engagement skyrockets, innovation thrives, and turnover drops. Protecting your talent pipeline isn’t about complex retention gimmicks; it’s about fostering an environment where people know, without a shadow of a doubt, that they belong.

    Engaging People with Power

One of our biggest research insights is that inclusion work stalls when it remains isolated in ERGs or HR departments. Without people in positions of power actively engaged as allies, systemic progress hits a ceiling. Powerful leaders often stay on the sidelines out of a fear of making a mistake or saying the wrong thing.

Allyship in Action serves as a compassionate, pushback-proof invitation for leaders to step up. Allyship isn’t about having all the answers or acting like a superhero. It’s about having the humility to say, “I don’t know, but I’m here to listen, learn, and leverage my influence to help.”

    Allyship is a Continuous Journey

Allyship is progress over perfection. It’s a practice. We are all works in progress. If we want better workplaces, we have to stay curious, challenge our own blind spots, and commit to taking small, consistent micro-actions every single day.

When we do allyship well, we don’t just change our teams, we also redefine what it means to lead for all.

    50: Julie Kratz - Female-Dominated Industries Do Not Exist Apr 20, 2019
    Show notes

    Is your industry male-dominated?

Name an industry that is female-dominated...

The usual answers are: non-profit, health care, and education. While women are employed at higher levels in these industries, they are not equally represented at a leadership level.

While women make up 76% of teachers in the US, they are only 16% of university presidents and 52% of principals. Women are 70% of the health care industry's workers, and just 30% of leadership team members. In non-profit, women are just 18% of CEO's while they are 75% of the workforce.

Lead like an ally, and challenge the perception of this excuse. There is no such thing as a female-dominated industry. Measure gender equality in your organization, check bias in the workplace, and call out microaggressions (non-inclusive behaviors) that tend to affect women.

We are stronger together. We are ONE.

    48: Julie Kratz - #MeToo, Where Are We Now? Apr 05, 2019
    Show notes

With the recent allegations of Joe Biden violating women's personal spaces, it is a good time to take a perspective on where we are at with #MeToo in the workplace.

This story serves as an example of what allies do - listen to learn - and what not to do - enter people's personal spaces that do not want to be touched.

So, how do you discuss this at work? In this episode, we unpack key strategies to be an ally and have this candid conversation. Including, the infamous workplace hug scenario.

47: Julie Kratz - The Gender Spectrum Mar 29, 2019
    Show notes

We have two hot topics to share in this week's episode. We're unpacking the gender spectrum as well as gendered language.

The words we use matter. When we say "guys" and "girls," we send signals that those that are underrepresented do not belong. Being inclusive as a leader requires us to address groups inclusively with words like "you all," "team," or "we." Those words help everyone feel more included.

I offer tools to take gender out of your vocabulary. Instead of thinking of "he" vs. "she," think of gender as non-binary. Recognize it is a spectrum and many fall in the middle of masculinity and femininity. Be okay with that ambiguity.

We are all allies in training. I love what one of my clients said this week, "I have some work to do." That is what an ally does. Starts inside and starts to change the outside through shifts in behavior.

We are stronger together. We are ONE.

46: Julie Kratz - Women as Allies for Women Mar 24, 2019
    Show notes

Two times this week clients stated that we need more women to be allies for women.

Whenever a subject surfaces more than once, I have to dig in. I get curious.

We need more allies for women. Women alone cannot solve this problem. 50% of the population will only solve 50% of the problem.

    So, why does this happen?

The tug of war gender bias exists in many organizations. The perception that there is only room for one woman to be on the leadership team.

What can you do about it?

Surface this hot topic and ask questions like, "how are we building a culture of allies here with women being allies for women?" "what are things we can do to be more inclusive and support across genders?" or simply share this episode and ask a team member or ally what they think.

Inclusive leaders have candid conversations. They listen to learn.

45: Julie Kratz - Captain Marvel, a Segway for a Diversity Conversation at Work Mar 15, 2019
    Show notes

This week, I unpack the first female-led superhero movie from Marvel - Captain America.

I discuss why this movie matters for women and young girls. We have to see it to believe it. And, it features people of color and white women as allies. Powerful stuff. No spoilers, promise!

My call to action is to have discussions in the workplace about the film - what people thought of it, what it means for diversity, and how we can have more diversity and inclusion in our organization.

If you are not having this conversation at work, you are behind. Take this easy segway to having a more diverse and inclusion workplace. Diversity is a candid conversation, leaders need to be the first to step into the conversation.

We are stronger together. We are ONE.

    44: Julie Kratz - Celebrating International Women's Day Mar 09, 2019
    Show notes

International Women's Day is March 8 every year. What did you do to celebrate?

My clients had women led panels, had a podcast or video discussions, Lunch & Learns, or invited me to speak.

Yesterday, I spent the day with my clients at Caterpillar, Zoetis, my very own Women's Leadership Academy, and wrapped up with Indiana Society of Association Executives on "Bolstering Your Authentic Confidence," "Leading with Influence," "Asking for What You Want," and "Building a Winning Career Game Plan."

Keep the conversation going beyond this one day. If you want to promote real positive change, keep the dialogue going.

If you are a leader or want to be more of an ally, ask questions like:

    - What is it like to be like you?

    - How can I support you?

    - Where do you want to go with your career?

Celebrate success. Keep it up. Be candid. Join us here for the next hot topic next week!

42: Julie Kratz - Everyone Has a Diversity Story (Bonus Episode) Oct 22, 2018
    Show notes

Here is my diversity story, along with tools to help you share your story. I had the opportunity to give a 5-minute talk on diversity storytelling this month – 200+ people and auto advancing slides – I was nervous! The subject was diversity storytelling. I believe everyone has a diversity story and as leaders, we all need to share them. In this episode, you will hear the live talk, and get tools to write your very own diversity story.

41: Denise Herd and Eleanor Beaton - Women as Allies Oct 01, 2018
    Show notes

While we need more male allies, we also need more women to be allies for women. Denise and Eleanor personify allies for women. Through their speaking on women's empowerment, both encourage women to share their voices more.

Denise Herd, visionary leader of Herd Strategies, helps women find and own their voices. Her candid conversation highlights the role of gender in conflict, and how allies (women and men) get to the root cause of the issue. As she shares, inclusivity is key. According to Denise, we need men at the table with women to hear what they think to be truly inclusive. And, we need to do that while maintaining safe places for women to learn and share their stories.

Eleanor Beaton, North America's top women's leadership expert, shares her candid conversation about unconscious bias as a mother in the workplace. While she wished she had responded more directly in the moment, she now teaches women how to speak up and directly address conflict when it happens. She offers questions as a powerful tool to stay in the moment to be candid. As she shares, curiosity, confidence, presence, and influence are vital skills for women to smash glass ceilings in every industry and every locale around the world.
