    Allyship in Action

I left Corporate America because the workplace culture sucked.

That realization was my personal pivot point, and it’s the entire driving force behind my podcast, Allyship in Action.

Inclusive workplace culture doesn’t happen by accident. It is built through intentional, consistent choices. In every episode of Allyship in Action, my goal is simple. My goal is to cut through the noise, skip the performative shiny stuff, and deliver real, practical tools that turn good intentions into sustainable workplace culture change.

Here is the core summary of what Allyship in Action is all about, and how all leaders can be better allies.

From Performative Statements to Everyday Practice

We’ve all seen standard corporate declarations like posting a statement on social media or making a grand pledge. While public support isn’t inherently bad, true allyship begins when the cameras are off. Allyship isn’t a badge you wear or a title you give yourself. Allyship is a verb. It requires continuous learning, unlearning, and showing up even when things get messy or uncomfortable.

In our conversations with workplace culture experts, we repeatedly unpack how real allies move from passive empathy to proactive intervention. That means noticing who gets interrupted in meetings, recognizing whose ideas are credited, and ensuring that opportunities are distributed equitably across the entire team.

Rewiring Workplace Culture for True Inclusion

A healthy workplace culture isn’t created by ping-pong tables or free snacks. Inclusive workplace cultures are built on psychological safety, fairness, and trust. For genuine inclusion to take root, organizations must audit the subtle systems that drive daily behavior. How are your meetings structured? How are performance reviews conducted? Who holds the informal power, and how is feedback delivered?

On the podcast, we showcase practical tactics—like rotating an Inclusion Booster role during weekly staff meetings to monitor airtime and ensure introverted or underrepresented voices are heard. When you design everyday workflows with inclusion in mind, you stop relying on heroic individual acts and start embedding equity into the DNA of your organization.

Protecting the Pipeline and How Inclusion Drives Talent Retention

There is both a deep human case and a rock-solid business case for DEI. In today’s shifting marketplace, talent retention is one of the single biggest operational challenges leaders face. High performers, especially women, racially diverse team members, neurodivergent colleagues, and Gen Z workers, simply will not stay where they have to mask their true selves or fight uphill against systemic microaggressions.

When employees feel seen, heard, and valued for their unique lived experiences, engagement skyrockets, innovation thrives, and turnover drops. Protecting your talent pipeline isn’t about complex retention gimmicks; it’s about fostering an environment where people know, without a shadow of a doubt, that they belong.

    Engaging People with Power

One of our biggest research insights is that inclusion work stalls when it remains isolated in ERGs or HR departments. Without people in positions of power actively engaged as allies, systemic progress hits a ceiling. Powerful leaders often stay on the sidelines out of a fear of making a mistake or saying the wrong thing.

Allyship in Action serves as a compassionate, pushback-proof invitation for leaders to step up. Allyship isn’t about having all the answers or acting like a superhero. It’s about having the humility to say, “I don’t know, but I’m here to listen, learn, and leverage my influence to help.”

    Allyship is a Continuous Journey

Allyship is progress over perfection. It’s a practice. We are all works in progress. If we want better workplaces, we have to stay curious, challenge our own blind spots, and commit to taking small, consistent micro-actions every single day.

When we do allyship well, we don’t just change our teams, we also redefine what it means to lead for all.

58: Lorraine Ball - How to Create Inclusive Values Jun 20, 2019
    Show notes

This week's podcast features my mentor and marketing expert, Lorraine Ball, founder of Roundpeg. Lorraine recently updated her organization's values with her team and shares her experience with me.

She asked her team, "who do you want to sit next to?" to help them craft specific values and behaviors to hold each other mutually accountable to. They have now become her hiring criteria and coaching standards. As Lorraine says, "values are a window into the soul of the person."

And, for those struggling to recruit and engage top talent, you just might be looking for an elusive unicorn. Think more about what values are critical to you and prioritize those over skills and industry knowledge that can be taught.

If your organization is creating or updating your values, we facilitate discussions and highly recommend this facilitation tool kit: https://www.story.solutions/store/the-values-deck

55: Julie Kratz - What Women Are Up Against At Work Report May 24, 2019
    Show notes

This week, Lean In published a study in partnership with Survey Monkey on What Women Are Up Against At Work. What they found is an alarming 63% of men are uncomfortable working with women at work on basic tasks.

This is a problem. We need men and women to work together now more than ever.

In the post #metoo era, sexual harassment is still pervasive in organizations, while men think it is getting better at the same time women think it is getting worse.

This week's episode leans into this tough conversation with tools for actionable change.

We need #menasallies. We are stronger together. We are ONE.

54: Julie Kratz - Non-Allies, What to Do About Bad Behavior at Work? May 17, 2019
    Show notes

Today's hot topic came from an audience question in one of my talks this week.

What do you do when you have a non-ally?

While, I would argue many men are allies in training or want to be an ally, what do you do when they truly do not want to engage as an ally?

To address this, I explain what a microaggression is and why they matter, and share a framework for a candid conversation about bad behavior.

First, ask yourself, are they aware of the behavior? (likely not)

Second, is the behavior intentional? (again, likely not)

Then, help them become aware and/or realize their intentions do not match the perception.

Resist delaying this conversation, because if you do not say something, you are saying it is okay.

53: Julie Kratz - More Women in Politics, Yet Has Anything Really Changed? May 10, 2019
    Show notes

Netflix Documentary on Women in Politics is Getting Attention. At the start of 2019, women made unprecedented advances into politics in the United States. There was a 15% increase overnight in women in Congress than in 2018. Yet, the percentage of the total is only up from 20.6% to 23.7%.

The women that have joined are experiencing criticism, which may be perceived as gender bias. If men were to demonstrate this behavior, would it be okay?

And, the women that are joining are largely Democrats, many of which won on grass root campaigns. Is this what it will take to drive diversity in politics?

These questions and more covered in this week's episode.

I share my own discomfort talking about this topic and what I have done to lean into this tough conversation. The privilege walk is an excellent way to talk about diversity and inclusion at work.

51: Julie Kratz - How and When to Involve Our Allies Apr 26, 2019
    Show notes

This week, I had three interesting conversations with clients about gender equality and diversity and inclusion in the workplace.

    1) I brought my daughter to work with me this week when speaking at a conference, and was met with unexpected applause from the audience. Despite my nerves and apprehensions, I was so proud to have brought her to see Mama in action. More on this experience in our "Take Your Daughter to Work Day" blog: https://www.nextpivotpoint.com/blog/

    2) I was then met with some unexpected feedback on how to engage men in our Women's Leadership Academy. We came up with dual tracks for women and men as allies as a result based on key skills needed to be a successful women leader and be an inclusive leader. More on our Pivot Point Women's Leadership Academy: https://www.nextpivotpoint.com/womens-leadership-academy/

    3) I had a conversation with a diversity, equality, and inclusion officer that has created a full diversity and inclusion road map for her organization. They are pushing beyond check the box unconscious bias and empathy training. With only 50% of organizations do any equality training with their employees, there is an opportunity to differentiate with a holistic strategy and intentional set of activities that embed inclusive leadership skills into the culture. Video on Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion Road Maps: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w8kQ3sWxAZ0

Being an ally is a journey, think about:

What does it mean to be an ally for you personally?

How can you bring allies into the conversation and when is it the right time to do it?

How can you embed equality education and create a road map of activities beyond bias and empathy?
