'DIVIDED WE FALL' - A sermon by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar Feb 07, 2016
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, February 7, 2016, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION Both sides of the political spectrum in our country are claiming someone has stolen the American Dream. The result is that the American people are turning on each other. "A house divided against itself cannot stand," said Abraham Lincoln. A person divided within himself (or herself) is also set up to fall. Politicians and religious leaders often offer simplistic answers that feed on people's desire for control in uncertain times. The divisions we are seeing are in part a spiritual disease. Our initial work to repair the divisions in our country begins within. 'WE ARE THE ONES' - A sermon by Rev. Barbara Prose Jan 31, 2016
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, January 31, 2016, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Executive Director of Ministry. SERMON DESCRIPTION Our state is broke. We're having an average of 5 earthquakes a day. Our national elections are around the corner. 40% of OK residents vote. And we, as a community of liberal religious people, are conscientiously working to make this world a better place, putting our hearts, minds, and elbow grease into making Tulsa a little piece of heaven here on earth. Let's imagine you have the power to create a new law in the state of Oklahoma. What issue would you choose to focus on? What do you think would accomplish the most good for the most people? Imagine you can't choose by yourself but are being invited to share your own stories with others so that we can work together to create a new law or change an old one - right here in Oklahoma. Now imagine you are successful. If this feels like a dream, it's a dream about to come true, because we are the ones we've been waiting for. 'WHY WE LIE' - A sermon by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar Jan 24, 2016
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, January 24, 2016, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION Lying has become so pervasive in our culture that we now have countless ways of dressing it up so that it doesn't sound so bad. Instead of telling lies anymore, we: "Massage the truth" or we, "offer the truth from a favorable perspective" or we engage in "selective disclosure," "creative enhancement," "strategic misrepresentations," "poetic truth." We bend the truth or shade the truth or shave the truth or stretch it a bit. And our current favorite dress for dishonesty, we say it isn't a lie, it's just spin. It's the truth enhanced. Why do we lie? That is the subject of my message this Sunday. 'MARTIN, MALCOLM, AND MUSLIMS' - A sermon by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar Jan 17, 2016
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, January 17, 2016, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION A look at why there has never been an African American "Al Qaida" or African American "Intifada" movement in America despite the violence and disenfranchisement of African Americans throughout history and what we can learn from these two African American leaders of the past about how to deal with global terrorism. As our nation, once again, celebrates the legacy and honors the life and leadership of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., I look at the relationship between Dr. King and Malcolm X to see what it teaches us about Islam as well as about our current climate of prejudice in America. 'IS JESUS THE ONLY WAY, TRUTH AND LIFE?' - A sermon by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar Jan 10, 2016
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, January 10, 2016, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION In John 14:6 it is written that Jesus said: "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." This passage has been interpreted to mean that Jesus is the exclusive way to God. If course, it makes a big difference if a person believes there is only one truth or there are many truths. If there are many truths, then what does truth even mean? Can something be true to one person or in one place or in one time and then be untrue to someone else in another place and another time? Is everything relative? Or is there a central truth we can always count on? This will be my topic on Sunday as we continue this month's theme of Truth. 'A HERO'S JOURNEY' - A sermon by Rev. Barbara Prose Jan 10, 2016
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, January 10, 2016, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Executive Director of Ministry. SERMON DESCRIPTION "Truth and courage aren't always comfortable, but they're never weaknesses." According to Brenee Brown, it takes curiosity and courage to tell our true stories so that we can live a wholehearted life. It also requires that we get curious about our own feelings, and not believe every story we tell ourselves. The new year is just the right time to give ourselves a fresh start and I am learning so much from Brown, I am grateful to be able to share more stories about how we can develop shame resilience as we learn to claim our own worthiness. Are you ready to be more caring and more confident? Ready to be less resentful and regretful? It seems like we all want to be relaxed, real, resilient. But when life events knock us down, we either want to deny the pain or distract ourselves with various pleasures. Since we know life will knock us down again in the coming year, it makes sense to learn as much as we can about how people have managed to rise strong, even stronger and more whole than they were before, so we can be ready for something really new in 2016. Jesus said, "Know the truth and it will set you free." But what kind of truth was he talking about? This Sunday we'll explore how telling ourselves the truth about our own feelings and our own stories, can set us free to live and love the way we imagine it's possible to do. Mother's Day Homily by Rev. Barbara Prose May 10, 2015
    Show notes

The homily was delivered on Sunday, May 10, 2015, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Executive Director of Ministry. HOMILY DESCRIPTION To build community, a few times a year we bring all three Sunday services together for a celebration. Mother's Day is one of those Sundays. It is also our annual flower communion service. You are asked to bring a flower to church to place in a central bouquet and you will be invited to take someone else's flower home with you. It is a beloved tradition at All Souls as well as in our sister churches around the world. We will hear music from all three of our children's choirs as well as a special barbershop quartet and music from New Dimensions Chorale. My Mother's Day message will not be long, but I hope it will leave a lasting impression. Bring your mother to church and stay for our Mother's Day Brunch, which will be delicious and supports our Youth Group. It should be another Sunday to remember. 'Creating New Personal & Powerful Realities' - A sermon by Bishop Carlton D. Pearson Apr 26, 2015
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, April 26, 2015, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Bishop Carlton D. Pearson, Guest Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION Transformation, from its Greek origin means, transfiguration. It is actually changing the way you figure things out or how you figure into things. It is paying attention to the way you feel, and then choosing thoughts about you, that feel the very best. This is the way you manage your own vibration, which means you are controlling your own point and power of attraction. By doing so, you are creating your own reality and no longer a victim of someone else's.
