'Broken Record Breakthroughs' - A message by David Ruffin Mar 22, 2015
    Show notes

The message was delivered on Sunday, March 22, 2015, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by David Ruffin, Resident Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION Ever feel like you’re spinning on a broken record? Overcoming great challenges, working through pain and loss, only to find yourself tripped back up by brokenness all over again? ...It gets pretty tiring, to say the least. At some point most of us have probably felt like finding a way off the turn table or calling upon some envisioned master disc player to change the music!! Hello?! MC?? This disc is scratched!! ...But new vinyl doesn’t seem to be part of the record contract. Can we ever break through the brokenness to the happiness, wholeness and harmony we long for, when the record itself is so clearly broken? At Sunday’s Point we’ll reconnect with our breakthrough power for navigating scratchy vinyl, time and again, and somehow making ever more beautiful music. 'The New Day' - A sermon by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar Mar 22, 2015
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, March 22, 2015, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION We call it, “the break of dawn” or “the break of a new day “ There is an interesting connection between breaking and newness. We cut the ribbon to dedicate a new building. We smash champagne over the bow of a new boat. Jews break a glass during the wedding ceremony and it is a tradition in the US to cut a cake as part of a marriage celebration. What is the point of this universal connection between breaking and new life? 'Broken But Not Destroyed... Picking Up the Pieces' - A sermon by Bishop Carlton D. Pearson Mar 15, 2015
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, March 15, 2015, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Bishop Carlton D. Pearson, Guest Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION Have you ever felt fractured or damaged and no longer in one piece or in working order? If you want to effect substantial change in your life experience, you must think thoughts that feel different as you think them. You are not what you believe, you are what you think about what you believe. “We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed;” (The Apostle Paul) Your attitude determines your altitude. 'Breaking the American Family Open: Our New Family' - A sermon by Rev. Barbara Prose Mar 15, 2015
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, March 15, 2015, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Executive Director of Ministry. SERMON DESCRIPTION Our families are changing. More unmarried couples are raising children, more gay and lesbian couples are raising children, more single women are having children, more people are living together without getting married, more mothers of young children are working outside the home, more people of different races are marrying each other, and more women are choosing not to ever have children at all. The facts are undebatable and undebated. The meaning of these family facts divides our country into red and blue states. Join me this Sunday, for another look at Family Values, a reflection shared earlier at The Point, so our congregation can make meaning of these changes in our country and in our own families. Because I imagine your family is changing too! 'Broken Open At Last!' - A sermon by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar Mar 01, 2015
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, March 1, 2015, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION “When you are broken open you get to discover for the first time what is inside you.” —Bryant McGill In March we launch a new theme: “Brokenness”. Life is beautiful, but it is also full of broken hearts, broken promises, broken vows, broken bones, broken families, broken relationships, and brokenness of all kinds. Much of life’s meaning and possibilities are determined by how we face the broken places in our bodies, hearts and world. Beautiful mosaics are made from broken things. Bones are stronger in the places where they have broken and healed. Exquisite gems are found among broken rocks. During the month, we will look at how we can find the gems, strength, beauty, and possibilities in the broken places in our lives and in our world. 'Ordinary Problems: A Christian Universalist Perspective' - A sermon by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar Feb 22, 2015
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, February 22, 2015, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION ”How could we forget those ancient myths that stand at the beginning of all races, the myths about dragons that at the last moment are transformed into princesses? Perhaps all the dragons in our lives are princesses who are only waiting to see us act, just once, with beauty and courage. Perhaps everything that frightens us is, in its deepest essence, something helpless that wants our love.” —Rainer Maria Rilke Ordinary problems are not necessarily trivial problems. Everyone of us has problems of our own; even if we like to pretend we have it all together and even though we tend to focus on others’ problems. Sometimes we focus so much on the big problems that we fail to find the beauty, teaching, and the grace within the ordinary problems of our lives. Sometimes our greatest teachers are the small obstacles and challenges we encounter every day. I delivered this message in the Traditional and The Point services last week. This week, in the Contemporary service, I will share it from a Christian and Universalist perspective. 'The Power of a Positive No' - A sermon by Rev. Barbara Prose Feb 22, 2015
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, February 22, 2015, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Executive Director of Ministry. SERMON DESCRIPTION Every parent of a two-year-old knows the power of “No.” But so did Rosa Parks, Mahatma Gandhi, and the writers of our country’s Declaration of Independence. No, I will not give up my seat. No, I will not follow a law that deprives the poorest of the poor of the most basic of human needs. No, I will not pay taxes to a foreign monarch. Beneath our most powerful Nos, often, an even more powerful YES, lies waiting to be fully expressed. Yes, I matter. Yes, the poor deserve dignity. Yes, independence is worth fighting for. When a woman says No to a pregnancy, she is often also saying Yes to something very important: her health, her independence, her marriage, and more. When has saying No changed the direction of your life? What was your underlying Yes? Join me as we explore the power and potential of our personal and political NOs, in order to uncover our wholehearted YESSES, especially those that fire up, fuel and sustain social transformation.
