'UNFURL YOURSELF IN GRACE' - A homily by Rev. David Ruffin May 22, 2016
    Show notes

The homily was delivered on Sunday, May 22, 2016, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. David Ruffin, Assistant Minister. HOMILY DESCRIPTION "Unfurl yourself into the grace of new beginning. That is at one with your life's desire… For your soul senses the world that awaits you." —John O'Donohue What is possible when we truly, fully receive the gift of Grace? What power do we release in our lives? What does it look like to not just have faith that grace will be there when we most need it (i.e. when our normal control mechanisms fail us) but to surrender to it, opening ourselves to receive and follow the flow of grace, each and every day?! The promise of grace - the unearned, unconditional love and beauty, and "right here, right now," goodness of life, is the promise of the possibility of freedom from fear. Not freedom from vulnerability or heartbreak. But true freedom from ultimate fear. Can you let this promise give birth to you anew? What are you free to be and do with this one wild beautiful life of yours? 'MAKING MORE SPACE FOR GRACE' - A sermon by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar May 15, 2016
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, May 15, 2016, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION If grace is a gift freely given to all people including the righteous and the wicked, how are you doing in relationship to grace? Are you "making space for grace" as Rev. Barbara Prose asked last Sunday? Is there room in your daily life and in your heart for love and spirit to enter in new and surprising ways? It is Pentecost Sunday and opening oneself as a vessels of the spirit is how the first church service began. It was an eclectic and diverse group of people who gathered on Pentecost and found their lives transformed. How are we like them and what is required for us to open ourselves as recipients and as conduits of God's love? What would it mean if we did? 'WILL & GRACE' - A sermon by Rev. Barbara Prose May 15, 2016
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, May 15, 2016, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Executive Director of Ministry. SERMON DESCRIPTION We know perception and reality don't always match up. But what can we do about it? We assume that the external world maps our internal experience. This is a cup. I pour water into it and have a drink. But psychologists and neuroscientists are discovering that even perception is not fixed but flexible, and that we are incapable of being fully objective, even in our most mundane observations. Knowing this, let's talk about the tools that can help us navigate the stormy waters of our personal relationships and today's political landscape, so we can make more space for grace in our daily lives. 'WHY GOOD THINGS HAPPEN TO BAD PEOPLE' - A sermon by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar May 01, 2016
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, May 1, 2016, at All SoulsUnitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar,Senior Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION Is there a goodness of life that is bestowed on us regardless ofwhether or not we deserve it? In traditional theological languagethis would be called "grace." It is said that there is a goodnessthat is granted to us solely to the degree that we have thecapacity to receive it. If that is true, then a realistic goalwould be to remove the barriers and obstacles that get in the wayof our receiving such free gifts. Through the course of life weaccumulate various barriers to life's goodness. Yet, if people canexperience the goodness of life without earning it, why wouldn'tthat encourage people to be selfish or bad? Good things happen tobad people and since we all are bad sometimes, this is good news!Sunday, as we launch our new theme of "Gifts and Grace" I willspeak in the Traditional Service and The Point about the idea ofunmerited gifts, that like the sun, are received by the therighteous and the unrighteous alike. 'THE ART, DISCIPLINE, AND SCIENCE OF LETTING GO' - A sermon by Bishop Carlton D. Pearson Apr 17, 2016
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, April 17, 2016, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Bishop Carlton D. Pearson, Affiliate Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION It is an American cultural condition to "hold on." It's part of our common consciousness and motivates us from birth. We naturally hold on to our mother's breast for nourishment and life. "Holding on for dear life" is a term of both desperation and strength. Letting go on the other hand is in sometimes considered a weakness and even for some, a sin. But there comes a time when letting go can actually save your life. Letting go is often a more rewarding discipline than hanging on. In this day of ongoing change and evolution, we must all learn the art, discipline and science of letting go. 'YOU'LL NEVER KNOW... UNLESS YOU LET GO ' - A sermon by Rev. David Ruffin Apr 17, 2016
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, April 17, 2016, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. David Ruffin, Assistant Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION Even though letting go is at the heart of being alive, we often resist it with all the strength we have. But clinched fists receive little… Striving to hold on to what we cannot grasp, we keep ourselves from the greatest gifts life has to offer. In a contemporary culture that emphasizes accruing our way toward happiness, could you risk letting go of your white-knuckled grip on what you think you need to be okay? If you can, you may find you're finally able to fully receive what you're already being given, and for that matter, finally able to fully give what you're capable of giving to others. But you'll never really know unless you really let go. 'FREEDOM IS NOT FOR COWARDS' - A sermon by Bishop Carlton D. Pearson Apr 10, 2016
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, April 10, 2016, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Bishop Carlton D. Pearson, Affiliate Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION The opposite of letting go is holding on. Both have their place and purpose in consciousness and character. Knowing when and how to do either is a spiritual discipline of life, love, and liberty. Freedom is not for cowards. 'LETTING GO OF THE THINGS THAT HURT US ' - A sermon by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar Apr 10, 2016
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, April 10, 2016, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION Sometimes it seems like the things we are drawn to or that we like best are not always the things that are good for us. Why do people have such a hard time letting go, even when we are letting go of something or someone that we know is hurting us? How can we learn to let go? When we do let go? And how can we maintain our freedom? 'THE CONCEPT OF SALVATION' - A sermon by Bishop Carlton D. Pearson Mar 20, 2016
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, March 20, 2016, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Bishop Carlton D. Pearson, Affiliate Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION As most people, particularly Christians, perceive it, the concept of salvation is actually built more around fear than faith. Religious faith is more in religious fears, or fear based theologies, particularly fear of God or the gods than it is in benevolence. Do we need Jesus to protect us from God? Jesus didn't come to protect us from God, but to reconnect us to God in consciousness.
