'SYRIAN SOLSTICE' - A sermon by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar Dec 18, 2016
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, December 18, 2016, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION Solstice represents the darkest time of the year and comes with the promise of hope being born out of that darkness. Today, people all over the world are witnessing atrocities and war crimes of unbelievable proportions in Syria through photos, tweets of despair, and live-feeds on social media. As millions of people - including thousands of children - face starvation, barrel bombs and torture at the hands of their fellow human beings, are there any signs of hope's promise in such a dark time? Where is God in this mass devastation? How and why are Syrian Christians creating makeshift crèches? How have Syrian Muslims maintained their holidays and hope despite the inhumanity and destruction? Let's not just talk about the theory of light's birth in dark times, let's stare into the heart of darkness today and see if we can find any light. 'BRIDGING HUMANITY TO DIVINITY, THE RECONNECT!' - A sermon by Bishop Carlton D. Pearson Dec 11, 2016
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, December 11, 2016, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Bishop Carlton D. Pearson, Affiliate Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION In the farthest reaches, regions, and rhythms of consciousness there is a reality and intelligence people like to call God. If, in fact, God is infinite (without end), then how can we who are finite (with limitations and a perceived end), define an Infinite Reality? God is not a name or a pronoun. God is not an it, a he, a she, or a they. God is a belief or ideology that varies according to culture, geography, tradition, and history. Bridging our humanity to divinity is the art and science of the human soul and sojourn. The message was delivered on Sunday, December 11, 2016, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Executive Director of Ministry. MESSAGE DESCRIPTION Our national social justice campaign declares, "We Are Standing on the Side of Love." But how is it done? How do we counter hatred and stay calm? How do we fight racism and remain friends? How do we meet our enemy and engage peacefully? Our times demand that we engage with these questions. 'COVENANTAL DISAGREEMENT' - A sermon by Bishop Carlton D. Pearson Nov 27, 2016
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, November 27, 2016, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Bishop Carlton D. Pearson, Affiliate Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION My favorite scriptural covenant is recorded as something Jesus said in the Gospel of Luke 10:27, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind"; and "Love your neighbor as yourself" which suggests both vertical and horizontal covenant. Our history with indigenous people on this continent is the story of repeatedly broken covenants. How does our covenant with God impact and influence our agreements with each other? 'ONE HUMAN FAMILY' - A sermon by Rev. Barbara Prose Nov 13, 2016
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, November 13, 2016, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Executive Director of Ministry. SERMON DESCRIPTION What now? With 50% of the people celebrating and eager, and another 50% of the people grieving or protesting, how do we find our own center? Jesus called his disciples and followers to create family with people who were drastically different than themselves. We who feel his call and the legacy of that call to expand the covenant of our country and constitution to include ALL people, know we must face the future and each other with love and trust, instead of fear and suspicion. This is our practice, this is an arduous path of the heart - to love beyond belief. We need each other to survive. 'WHO'S YOUR NEIGHBOR AND WHAT DOES LOVE REQUIRE OF US?' - A sermon by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar Nov 13, 2016
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, November 13, 2016, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION When my plane touched down in the United States on Wednesday night, it was a different country from the one I left. I was in Frankfurt, Germany for the European Unitarian Universalist conference as the keynote speaker. After a presidential election like we have had, relationships are often frayed and strained and sometimes broken. How we respond when it's over makes a huge impact. One of the strengths of our democracy has been our ability to maintain our divergent positions while also coming back together as one nation after a hard fought campaign. After this election season, trust in our system of government has been broken for many reasons for many people. In Germany, they have been dividing over the issue of taking in over one million Syrian refugees. My talk was titled, Who's Your Neighbor and What Does Love Require of Us? It was a tremendous experience and lead to fascinating conversations. This same topic can be applied to our current situation in the United States. 'THE MYSTERY OF COVENANTAL DISAGREEMENT' - A sermon by Bishop Carlton D. Pearson Nov 06, 2016
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, November 6, 2016, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Bishop Carlton D. Pearson, Affiliate Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION Covenant is about agreement and agreement inevitably involves negotiation and even concession. You can actually agree to disagree and still be in covenant, or enjoy commitment and comradery. We don't have to go along to get along. We can mind many of the same things without necessarily having the same mind about everything. And such is the life and light of covenant community or covenant living! My favorite scriptural covenant is recorded as something Jesus said in the gospel of Luke 10:27 "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind;" and "Love your neighbor as yourself" which suggests both vertical and horizontal covenant.
