'A HOUSE DIVIDED' - A sermon by Rev. Barbara Prose Oct 02, 2016
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, October 2, 2016, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Executive Director of Ministry. SERMON DESCRIPTION There is no better way to conquer an enemy than to divide them—thus the expression, "divide and conquer." For hundreds of years, religion has used the threat of being divided in the afterlife—go to heaven or go to hell—as a way of dividing and disempowering people. Temptation to defend ourselves, when we talk about issues of oppression, divides families and friendships. This defensiveness and division is a threat to our families, our future, and our freedom. Let's talk about the connections between oppressions so we can, as Rev. Dr. Barber says, build a "fusion coalition of people committed to reconstructing America itself." The most important word in our constitution and in our work for justice, is "we." 'WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU GET' - A sermon by Bishop Carlton D. Pearson Sep 25, 2016
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, September 25, 2016, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Bishop Carlton D. Pearson, Affiliate Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION Vision is the ability to think about and plan the future with imagination and creative wisdom. Visions and images of the future are like magnets. They literally pull you towards them. There is a metaphysical aspect to vision which suggests the imagination precedes action. In other words, before you attempt to make something right, you must first see it right. What you see is what you ultimately will get! 'HOPE, RAGE, & RESILIENCE' - A sermon by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar Sep 25, 2016
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, September 25, 2016, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION The laws changed with the Civil Rights movement, but laws alone do not change attitudes, social structures, and economic conditions that have existed for centuries... After centuries of cultural, institutional, economic, and social racism, a culture and a society does not just change a law or do any one thing, and all of a sudden, everyone's actions and attitudes change. Racial bias is baked into the foundations of this culture from the very beginning. It's ingrained in our collective psyche. 'VISION OF IMPERFECTION' - A reflection by Rev. Barbara Prose Sep 18, 2016
    Show notes

The reflection was delivered on Sunday, September 18, 2016, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, at the Humanist Service by Rev. Barbara Prose, Executive Director of Ministry. REFLECTION DESCRIPTION When we cling to an idealized image of love, our marriages fail. When we stay attached to our parents' projection of who we are supposed to be, we pass up on opportunities to fulfill our own unique destiny. When we dream about the congress and the country we wish existed, we can become cynical or disengaged. How would your life change if you stopped dreaming? If you let go of your habit of wishful thinking and embraced your life just as it is? This Sunday we will explore how our visions and dreams prevent us from living and loving ourselves and each other right now. 'SAVING MALCHUS' - A sermon by Dr. Willie J. Parker Sep 18, 2016
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, September 18, 2016, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Dr. Willie J. Parker, Guest Speaker. SERMON DESCRIPTION Malchus, the servant of the Jewish high priest whose ear Peter cut off with the sword when Jesus was taken at the Garden of Gethsemane, was healed at the same time that Jesus forbade his followers to engage in assault for his protection. On the big issues of the day militancy is escalating on both sides of truth. In his last public miracle, Jesus heals the injured ear, a critical portal for truth and dialogue, and more importantly, he commands his follower to put away weapons of offense. I will explore how in the quest for truth, each of us are both Malchus and Peter, making it in all of our best interest to heed Jesus' command to put away the sword. *Dr. Willie J. Parker is a reproductive justice advocate and abortion care provider. His work includes a focus on violence against women, sexual assault prevention, and reproductive health rights through advocacy, provision of contraceptive and abortion services, and men's reproductive health. '9/11 LESSONS & LANGUISHES IN TRUST' - A sermon by Bishop Carlton D. Pearson Sep 11, 2016
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, September 11, 2016, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Bishop Carlton D. Pearson, Affiliate Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION For many people there were two different responses to the tragedy of 9/11. Both had to do with trust. One was "Can we ever trust our nation to protect us from a reoccurrence of 9/11?" The other, "Do we need protection from a government who allowed or who aligned itself to this tragedy?" What dominates your consciousness, fear or faith? Tricks or trust? You decide! 'LOVING OUT LOUD' - A sermon by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar Sep 11, 2016
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, September 11, 2016, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION We say that "Love is the spirit of our church" and we aim to "love beyond belief." It's important to consider how we make our love visible, how we make our love audible, and how it is felt. This year, at All Souls, we will choose love over fear as we will learn to "Love Out Loud." Next Sunday we will commemorate the 15th anniversary of the 911 attacks on our nation in 2001. Our adult choirs will join together for special performances where our love will be heard in harmony and I will share my vision of how we will "Love Out Loud" together. 'SHEEP GO TO HEAVEN, GOATS GO TO HELL' - A sermon by Steven Williams Sep 04, 2016
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, September 4, 2016, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Steven Williams, Student Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION There's a passage in Matthew 5 that starts, "When the Son of Man comes... All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats." Instead of taking a literal approach to this statement, I think it represents what kind of behavior God wants from people, and what the world would look like in the best case scenario, where we act in our common interest — or the worst case scenario, where we act in our self-interest. When we act like goats, which are hierarchical, everyone-for-oneself creatures, then the world suffers. But, when we act in the interest of all humanity, we allow for eternal life. 'ACTS OF PUBLIC LOVE' - A sermon by Rev. Barbara Prose Sep 04, 2016
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, September 4, 2016, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Executive Director of Ministry. SERMON DESCRIPTION Will you choose love or fear? At a recent Justice Council meeting, representatives from each of our justice teams checked in. As members immersed in protecting Tulsa's natural resources and meeting the needs of Tulsa's children and teachers, new voters, inmates, and immigrants described their projects, I realized that during this election season, we can choose the path of public love, over that of public hate and fear. So, on this Labor Day Sunday, I hope you will join me and learn about the labor of these All Souls leaders. They'll be here too, to meet and talk with you!
