'THE TIES OF LOVE WHICH BIND US TOGETHER' - A sermon by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar Apr 09, 2017
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, April 9, 2017, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION On Sunday, on the eve of determining the next steps towards All Souls' future, it was important for us to first join in worship. It was a time to remember how important this congregation is to each of us and to our community. After the abrupt resignation of Unitarian Universalist Association President, Peter Morales, it's more important than ever to focus on the future of Unitarian Universalism in the 21st century and our future in Tulsa. The potential is great, the stakes are high and the emotions are mixed. One thing that unites us, even in times of difference, is the call of our free faith. Let's gather together to support each other. Let's meet and connect with others who attend a different service. Let's listen to each of our choirs sing. Let us strengthen the ties of love which bind us together, giving dignity, meaning, worth and joy to all our days. 'NAVIGATING OUR SPIRITUAL JOURNEY' - A sermon by Bishop Carlton D. Pearson Mar 19, 2017
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, March 19, 2017, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Bishop Carlton D. Pearson, Affiliate Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION Religious authority and Spiritual authority are often assumed to have the same meaning, but they differ. Religious authority is a human construct and has its place and purpose. Spiritual authority is the result of transcendence, elevated consciousness, and respect for levels of mystical growth and discernment. Some say we are not human beings looking for spiritual experiences but are Spirits having an Earthly encounter. Navigating the journey can be supported by religious guidance. We call this guidance ministry. 'PLANTING A TREE AT THE END OF THE WORLD' - A sermon by Joseph Boyd Mar 19, 2017
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, March 19, 2017, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Joseph Boyd, Intern Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION A man asked Martin Luther, the Protestant reformer: "What would you do if you knew the end of the world would come tomorrow?" Luther replied: "I would plant a tree." We're all faced with the reality of endings. We can imagine the ending of our planet due to environmental devastation. Many are wondering if we are facing the end of our democratic experiment in America. Endings are personal too. We may be facing the end of a relationship, or the end of a loved one's life, or even the end of our own. Luther's paradoxical response of planting a tree may be able to open our understanding of what kind of attitude we need to cultivate in our reality of endings. 'CHANGING LIVES IN GUATEMALA AND AT HOME' - A sermon by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar Feb 19, 2017
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, February 19, 2017, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION Since the unexpected death of our daughter Sienna, we have learned that when a child precedes her parents in death, it reverses the usual dynamic of legacy. Instead of the parents' legacy being in the child's hands, the child's legacy is in the parents' hands. The Sienna Project is how we continue our daughter's legacy. The Sienna Project is a non-profit which has now built eight schools in remote villages in Guatemala. Earlier this month, myself and sixteen All Souls members, were transformed by our experience building a new school in a small Mayan village. To see how Sienna's short life will continually impact generations of children through education is a blessing beyond words. The Sienna Project is also changing our lives. Those who have participated in this year's and past projects, have been transformed by the experience. It reminds me about the meaning and potential this life holds, even after death. We would like to share with you how the experience we had impacts the way we see our world and our place in it. 'OXYGEN OF THE SOUL' - A sermon by Bishop Carlton D. Pearson Feb 12, 2017
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, February 12, 2017, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Bishop Carlton D. Pearson, Affiliate Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION "America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves." —Abraham Lincoln Freedom is our power, our right to act, to speak, and to think as we want without hindrance or restraint. Freedom is an inside reality. Freedom is consciousness. Moshe Dayan calls freedom the "oxygen of the soul." Freedom isn't a gift as much as a choice. It is a decision one must make in order to experience both its outward and inward manifestation. Galatians 5:1 "Stand fast therefore in the freedom wherewith Christ (consciousness) has made you free and be not again entangle with a yoke of (religious) bondage..." "Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed." —Martin Luther King, Jr. SUBSCRIBE TO AUDIO PODCAST: http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/all-souls-unitarian-church/id193096943 WATCH THIS SERMON ON YOUTUBE: https://youtu.be/q69iD_V4UTw SUBSCRIBE TO OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=allsoulsunitarian GIVE A DONATION TO HELP US SPREAD THIS LOVE BEYOND BELIEF: http://www.allsoulschurch.org/GIVE or text LOVEBB to 73256 LET'S CONNECT: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/allsoulstulsa Twitter: https://twitter.com/AllSoulsTulsa All Souls Church Website: http://www.allsoulschurch.org

'LIFE, LIBERTY & LEGACY' - A sermon by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar Feb 12, 2017
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, February 12, 2017, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION "The God who gave us life, gave us liberty at the same time." —Thomas Jefferson Jefferson was an American Revolutionary and someone who penned the Declaration of Independence. But, how did he square this sentiment with being a slave owner? The reality is, most of us are more complex than our reputations allow. A faithful patriot can be an unfaithful spouse. Someone with a successful career can fail as a parent. Everyone has weaknesses but must we judge others by their worst mistakes? Can we honor parts of someone when they lack integrity in other areas? How do we measure the value of a life? Perhaps we reflect on the words from Jesus, "He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone."
