'CANNOT REST' - A Charge to the Congregation by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar Mar 24, 2019
    Show notes

The Charge to the Congregation was delivered on the occasion of the Installation of Rev. Barbara Prose as Associate Minister on Sunday, March 24, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. DESCRIPTION All Souls Unitarian Church called its first minister, Rev. Dr. James Kennedy, after the charter for 'All Souls Liberal Church' was signed on March 28, 1921. It was thought at the time that the word Liberal would be more widely accepted than Unitarian. Ninety-eight years later, the historic and largest Unitarian church, will officially install The Reverend Barbara Prose as minister of the current congregation. Everyone is invited to celebrate 98 years of liberal ministers in Tulsa, including Alfred von Stilli, Robert Sonen, John B. Wolf, and others on Heritage Sunday in one special service for all at 10:30 a.m. CST. If you can't join us in person, please join us via live stream at allsoulschurch.org/live. Rev. Barbara Prose was hired by All Souls Senior Minister Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar in 2011. In 2014, she became the Executive Director of Ministry. Her leadership has included the development of 24/7 pastoral care for members, SpiritSong hospice choir, numerous justice initiatives including New Sanctuary Network Tulsa, and the continued development of the organization. All of our choirs will share their gifts of song during the service. Rev. Cathey Edwards, Senior Minister of Hope Unitarian Church, and Rabbi Marc Fitzerman, B'nai Emunah Synogogue, will join Rev. Lavanhar and Rev. Gerald Davis during the service and installation of Rev. Barbara Prose. 'ARE YOU A FEMINIST?' - A sermon by Rev. Barbara Prose (Contemporary Service) Mar 17, 2019

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, March 17, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Executive Director of Ministry. DESCRIPTION We learned last week that Jesus was a feminist. But what about you? If not, what would you have to let go of in order to become one? Bell Hooks said, "Feminist knowledge is for everybody. If women and men want to know love, we have to yearn for feminism. For without feminist thinking and practice we lack the foundation to create loving bonds. There can be no love when there is domination." *Watch TED Talk by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie referenced to in the sermon: bit.ly/ted-feminism SUBSCRIBE TO AUDIO PODCAST: http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/all-souls-unitarian-church/id193096943 WATCH THIS SERMON ON YOUTUBE: https://youtu.be/cqjCMuBSw60 SUBSCRIBE TO OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=allsoulsunitarian GIVE A DONATION TO HELP US SPREAD THIS LOVE BEYOND BELIEF: http://www.allsoulschurch.org/GIVE or text LOVEBB to 73256 LET'S CONNECT: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/allsoulstulsa Twitter: https://twitter.com/AllSoulsTulsa All Souls Church Website: http://www.allsoulschurch.org

'THE POWER OF NO' - A message by Em Kianka (Humanist Service) Mar 17, 2019
    Show notes

The message was delivered on Sunday, March 17, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Em Kianka, Intern Minister, at the Humanist Service. DESCRIPTION "No" is an incredibly life-giving full-stop sentence. It creates boundaries and space for life and growth and it can also be a protest against unjust realities and the spark of movements for liberation: it makes us free. In this larger culture of ours, however, it often feels like "yes" is preferable to "no"--that "no" is negative and limiting while "yes" is affirming and positive. How do we destigmatize "no", stop sending the ubiquitous message to say "yes", and what stories and examples are available to us as a spiritual community? *Music: Kara Staiger, soloist SUBSCRIBE TO AUDIO PODCAST: http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/all-souls-unitarian-church/id193096943 SUBSCRIBE TO OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=allsoulsunitarian GIVE A DONATION TO HELP US SPREAD THIS LOVE BEYOND BELIEF: http://www.allsoulschurch.org/GIVE or text LOVEBB to 73256 LET'S CONNECT: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/allsoulstulsa Twitter: https://twitter.com/AllSoulsTulsa All Souls Church Website: http://www.allsoulschurch.org

'JESUS WAS A FEMINIST... AND SO AM I!' - A sermon by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar (Contemporary Service) Mar 10, 2019
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, March 10, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. DESCRIPTION Just because the dominant factions of Christianity today perpetuate women's submission and oppression does not mean it was the vision Jesus held out for the world. In fact, Jesus was way ahead of his time regarding women's empowerment and liberation. Honestly, so was Muhammad at the founding of Islam. Why is it that these traditions have more often become tools of misogyny rather than forces for continued liberation? More importantly, what can we all do in these times to create a new way of gender equity and wholeness? I have some ideas and hope you will join me. 'MAKING SPACE' - A sermon by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar (Humanist Service) Mar 03, 2019
    Show notes

The message was delivered on Sunday, March 3, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister, at the Humanist Service. DESCRIPTION The show, Tidying Up with Marie Kondo, is an example of the trend sweeping the nation, tidying up and organizing our homes. Marie Kondo is the new guru of de-cluttering one's life. She asks, "Does it spark joy?" and says that if it doesn't, let it go! We begin March with our monthly theme of Letting Go. I have been inspired by this de-cluttering movement and will share about how we can de-clutter our spirit. We will also honor Women's History month in our services. 'LET GO AND LET GOD' - A sermon by Carlton D. Pearson (Contemporary Service) Mar 03, 2019
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, March 3, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Carlton D. Pearson, Affiliate Minister. DESCRIPTION Human nature tends to have a "hang or hold on" mentality, as if something is always being forcibly, or even subtly taken away. We naturally tend to fight to avoid being victimized and vandalized by life. Thus the idea of letting go, releasing, or relinquishing seems foreign and a kind of malady, weakness or liability. When in reality, letting go can be the most powerful asset of your soul. Letting go can lead to an expanded self, releasing you to your most liberated and engaged personal existence. Letting go can sometimes mean letting God to artfully and graciously bridge your humanity to your divinity in the most sublime way. Join us all month while we work and walk through the process an progress of letting go! *Music: Cynthia Simmons, vocals, and Barron Ryan, piano SUBSCRIBE TO AUDIO PODCAST: http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/all-souls-unitarian-church/id193096943 WATCH THIS SERMON ON YOUTUBE: https://youtu.be/fTXeisIyZK8 SUBSCRIBE TO OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=allsoulsunitarian GIVE A DONATION TO HELP US SPREAD THIS LOVE BEYOND BELIEF: http://www.allsoulschurch.org/GIVE or text LOVEBB to 73256 LET'S CONNECT: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/allsoulstulsa Twitter: https://twitter.com/AllSoulsTulsa All Souls Church Website: http://www.allsoulschurch.org
