'BREAKING THROUGH' - A message by Rev. Barbara Prose & Rev. Gerald L. Davis (Humanist Service) Jun 09, 2019
    Show notes

The message was delivered on Sunday, June 9, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Executive Director of Ministry, and Rev. Gerald L. Davis, Affiliate Minister, at the Humanist Service. DESCRIPTION Rev. Gerald Davis has been learning to maneuver with a walking stick for the visually impaired. Learning to walk with this type of aid is a high risk and greatly rewarding skill. In the spirit of our Trading Places series, I stepped into Rev. Davis's shoes. Working and walking along side Rev. Davis this month, I've experienced what breaking through feels like. Breaking through is taking risks, relying on physical and spiritual senses we've ignored, and learning to trust ourselves in new ways. If you are feeling stuck in any part of your life, this Trading Places Sunday is for you. Rev. Davis and I will share why we believe that there is no challenge you can't face. *Music: Rick Fortner, piano, Matt Edwards, percussion, Josh Massad, percussion, Zachary Avery, singing bowls SUBSCRIBE TO AUDIO PODCAST: http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/all-souls-unitarian-church/id193096943 SUBSCRIBE TO OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=allsoulsunitarian GIVE A DONATION TO HELP US SPREAD THIS LOVE BEYOND BELIEF: http://www.allsoulschurch.org/GIVE or text LOVEBB to 73256 LET'S CONNECT: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/allsoulstulsa Twitter: https://twitter.com/AllSoulsTulsa All Souls Church Website: http://www.allsoulschurch.org

'AN AMERICAN LEGACY' - A message by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar & Hank Fincken (Humanist Service) Jun 02, 2019
    Show notes

The message was delivered on Sunday, June 2, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister, and Hank Fincken, Actor, at the Humanist Service. DESCRIPTION In both services this Sunday, performer Hank Finken will bring to life the historic figure of Francisco Pizarro González in an unforgettable way. We will share commentary and discussion based on his epic and brutal story. Born in Spain, Francisco was poor, illegitimate, and had few prospects for success. Yet, he died in the Americas with power, status and wealth. His change of circumstances came at the cost of the destruction of the Incan Empire and many lives. To those who criticized him he would say, "I am told that God sits on a throne made of gold. Then I honor him in imitation. If you disagree, then abandon your life of soft pleasure and commit to the god of your choosing. I chose mine and he has given me a continent, riches and a name that will be remembered for all history." His is a story of overcoming, of success and failure, of war and deceit, of conquest and conversion. Be careful of the goals you set or the "God" you choose to believe in. Francisco's appearance is courtesy of Tulsa Chautauqua. Special thanks to the Tulsa Historical Society & Museum for hosting Tulsa Chautauqua on the theme From Pizarro to Picasso: Hispanic Legacy in America Today, June 4 through 8. 'LEAPING TOWARDS TRUTH' - A message by Em Kianka (Humanist Service) May 26, 2019
    Show notes

The message was delivered on Sunday, May 26, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Em Kianka, Intern Minister, at the Humanist Service. DESCRIPTION There are so many different reasons why it can be so hard to trust ourselves and to take leaps of faith—leaving behind perfectionism, "what if's," fears, and anxieties—towards accepting who we are and ultimately to our freedom. No matter how comfortable we are or become with ourselves, we never quite evolve past the leap it takes to trust that small but true inner voice that speaks to who we are and listen to the call of our heart. So, how do we leap? What does it mean to recognize, listen, and honor our own inner voice of truth? *Music: Kara Staiger, soloist, Rick Fortner, piano SUBSCRIBE TO AUDIO PODCAST: http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/all-souls-unitarian-church/id193096943 SUBSCRIBE TO OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=allsoulsunitarian GIVE A DONATION TO HELP US SPREAD THIS LOVE BEYOND BELIEF: http://www.allsoulschurch.org/GIVE or text LOVEBB to 73256 LET'S CONNECT: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/allsoulstulsa Twitter: https://twitter.com/AllSoulsTulsa All Souls Church Website: http://www.allsoulschurch.org

'LIVE YOUR TRUTH' - A sermon by Carlton D. Pearson (Contemporary Service) May 19, 2019
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, May 19, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Carlton D. Pearson, Affiliate Minister. DESCRIPTION As we celebrate graduates this Sunday, there is something to be said about living our truth, post-graduation. High school grads will step into the world as their true selves, finding their way. Older grads will embark on their genuine paths. I charge our grads and community to stay fluid and flexible us room to grow and learn. Staying fluid and flexible enables us to influence and even change truth as we know it, experience it and perceive it. That's what fascinates me most about the concept to truth. It's malleable to our own understanding and relationship with it. 'POLARIZED PERSPECTIVES' - A message by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar (Humanist Service) May 19, 2019
    Show notes

The message was delivered on Sunday, May 19, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister, at the Humanist Service. DESCRIPTION Something I read in the New York Times struck me as a truth we are facing today. "...toxic anonymity of virtual interaction through social media, ...we have the ingredients for a culture polarized by the perception that we are good and virtuous, while they are inhuman and evil." Media culture today allows people to live in "thought silos" where their ideas are rarely challenged. Relationships between people with different opinions are becoming more rare and more difficult. As we say "Congratulations!" to our graduates, I ask myself if we've prepared them to be disrupters of this new paradigm? Have we taught them to listen and engage across social, political, and cultural differences? Let's talk about what role religious liberals can play in promoting freedom and open discourse. This is not a simple subject, but it may be central to the future of our democracy and our search for the truth. The images we have for the divine have a significant impact on how we see the world. This Mother's Day, I want to consider sacred images of Mother and see how they can influence our ideas of the Ultimate and of ourselves. Bring a fresh flower to celebrate the mothers in your life in our Flower Communion.
