We Need a Spectacular Intervention Jan 19, 2020
    Show notes

"...It's those women [in Nazi Germany] who stood outside of Rosenstrasse in the cold, demanding to be reunited with their husbands. It's their husbands, defying the orders that they must ignore their wives. It's the soldiers putting down their guns and saying, 'I'm not firing on a bunch of unarmed women!' That's the power we have -- to confront the demands of an unjust society. To cause a scene that renders us awake to the political realities of our time. And to wield our collective power wisely together to jam the wheels of injustice. That's a spectacular intervention -- and a spectacular intervention is what we need. So let's get up and get going!"

Sermon by Andre Henry at All Saints Church, Pasadena, on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Sunday, January 19, 2020. Readings: Exodus 3:7-12 and Luke 6:27-36.

The Circle of Love to Which Everyone Belongs Jan 14, 2020

"In the delusion of separateness, everything divides into opposition and binaries. Baptism is a sacrament that wakes us up to the reality that God is for everyone everywhere. We can no longer separate or exclude anybody or anything from grace. Especially under the guise of religion."

We Are Wounders. We Are Healers. Jan 05, 2020
    Show notes

"We can be healed. Each of us and all of us. And … we can only be healed together. For it is the love of God poured into and through us in community that is the ultimate power, the power that can heal every wound, the power that can make each of us and all of us whole. It is the love of God poured into and through us in community that is the power that is never used to dominate or manipulate but always used with to rejuvenate and regenerate."

Sermon by Mike Kinman at All Saints Church, Pasadena, on Healing Sunday, January 5, 2020. Readings: Psalm 72:1-7, 10-14 and Matthew 2:1-12.

A Child Arrived Just the Other Day. He Came to the World...in the Usual Way. Dec 22, 2019
    Show notes

"It's time for a new narrative that recognizes that God loves us, that God dwells with us and in us not in spite of our humanity but because of it. That it is what we see as the most ordinary about ourselves that is the most extraordinary, the most sacred. A new narrative that says that Mary is worthy of being revered because she was a woman who lived a hard life with grace and power and raised a child under the most perilous of circumstances … and that, praise God, in that she is not unique among women but in the blessed company of so many women throughout time into today. A new narrative that says what Jesus said by sitting down to eat with the most scandalous people of his day. That it is when the world most shames us that God is loving us the hardest and holding us the tightest. That it is each of us just as we are, that God loves so passionately that God cannot bear to be separated from us, from you. That none of us are disposable – and it's time we stopped treating each other and ourselves like we are. It's time for a new narrative."

Sermon by Mike Kinman at All Saints Church, Pasadena, on Sunday, December 22, 2019. Readings: Isaiah 7:10-16 and Matthew 1:18-25.

Dear Mama, Thank You Dec 15, 2019
    Show notes

"Afeni and I bonded over birthing sons who had been gossiped about, misunderstood, and had experienced violent deaths as young adult men. Now, as mothers we did not parent in any Polyanna-ish way. Both of us had deliberately prepared our children for the pushback from those representing the Empire. For instance, I disclosed to Jesus when he was very young about how me and his father had to escape to Egypt because Empire would have killed him otherwise. Afeni shared with me that she instructed Tupac about how Empire infiltrated and eventually destroyed the efforts of the Black Panther Party. She educated him well about the consequences of being a freedom fighter that she knew all too well. Following her successful defense and acquittal, Afeni had experienced unrelenting retaliation. Empire terrorized every one of her post-incarceration employers to frighten them enough to lay Afeni off. Her inability to have places to use her bright, capable and resourceful mind really sent her and her family into such a whirlwind of challenges. I can't imagine how hard it must have been for her to look her son in the eyes, the very son who was in her womb when she was in prison, and tell him that she didn't have enough food for him and his sister, or to say we have to move another time and we have no place to go. Words can't describe how hard it must've been for her."

Sermon by Brinell Anderson at All Saints Church, Pasadena, on Joy Sunday, December 11, 2019. Readings: Canticle 15, Tupac Shakur's "When Ure Hero Falls: 4 My Hero (My Mother), and Matthew 11:2-11.

Metanoia: Change Your Direction Dec 08, 2019
    Show notes

"The original word for repent is the Greek word 'metanoia' which literally means to 'change your mind, to change direction' … and this word has nothing to do with guilt or shame. So, John the Baptist calls his audience to a thorough change of heart and mind. Repentance in this context literally means 'turning around,' 'moving in an opposite direction.' Repentance for John is an action and it is not meant to be about feeling shame or feeling bad. It is instead about thinking differently and therefore acting differently."

Sermon by Alfredo Feregrino at All Saints Church, Pasadena, on Sunday, December 8, 2019. Readings: Isaiah 11:1-10, and Matthew 3:1-12.

Holy Blackness: the Matrix of Creation Dec 01, 2019
    Show notes

"Jesus showed us by how he lived and died and lived again on the other side of death that nothing is too big, too much, too hard for God, that human dignity and flourishing are God's dream for us no matter under what oppressive systems we find ourselves. The Jesus who allied himself with the poor and disenfranchised by becoming poor and disenfranchised will not abandon us to a world that does not love us, fears us and seeks to harm us. Rather Jesus stands with us as we remake the world that is our heritage, our sacred trust, as we rediscover its poetry and the poetry inside of each of us."

Sermon by Wil Gafney at All Saints Church, Pasadena, on Sunday, December 1, 2019. Readings: Genesis 1:1-5, Psalm 8, Romans 8:18-25, and Matthew 24:32-44.

We Are Artists of the Impossible Nov 24, 2019
    Show notes

"The world is crying out for a different way. And here we are as All Saints Church committed to walk with a revolutionary Jesus. I wish I could stand here and tell you exactly what that looks like for us. I wish I had a five-point plan with metrics for success and funders in place. But revolutions of love don't begin that way. Here's how they do begin: They begin by us first imagining … just imagining … that the way things are isn't the way things have to be. That in the words of Andre Henry, "It doesn't have to be this way." That we might be a womb where the dreams of a new world can be conceived."

Sermon by Mike Kinman at All Saints Church, Pasadena, on All Saints Sunday, November 24, 2019. Readings: Jeremiah 23:1-6 and Luke 23:1-12.

Living in Jesus' Name Nov 17, 2019
    Show notes

"We are called into action in anticipation of this kingdom to come. So what are we called to do in Jesus' name? What are we called to do to protect our transgender siblings? Will you stop to ask the trans woman being harassed by the police if she needs any help? Will you make sure the trans youth experiencing homelessness in your community will have somewhere to eat a meal once this week? Will you accompany a trans person to immigration court to provide support and care? There is so much that we can do. Sometimes it can feel a little bit overwhelming. But as our Jewish siblings say, 'Do not be daunted by the enormity of the world's suffering. You are not obliged to complete the work, but neither are you free to desist from it.'"

Sermon by Austen Hartke at All Saints Church, Pasadena, on Sunday, November 17, 2019. Readings: Isaiah 65:17-25 and Luke 21:5-19.

The Invitation to Freedom in Our Lives Nov 10, 2019
    Show notes

"People started coming together and there was a lot of dancing going on. And my memory is that I didn't dance, that I totally sat it out. I don't know if you have memories like that -- chances where you had that space for freedom and you chose to sit it out. And I don't even know why. I took a couple videos and sometimes I think maybe if I was freer I would dance. Maybe if some of the stuff hadn't happened to me in my life as a kid I would dance. Maybe if I felt better in my body I would dance. Maybe if I didn't feel so conspicuous I would dance. Maybe if I was a better person I would dance. I don't know what it is that keeps you out of that space, but it doesn't serve any purpose."

Sermon by Becca Stevens at All Saints Church, Pasadena, on Sunday, November 10, 2019. Readings: Job 19:23-27a and Luke 20:27, 34-38.
