BH S08.E19: Crimes & Misdemeanors Apr 23, 2018

Show notes

As if there weren't already enough reasons to be appalled by both the American health care system and the American carceral state: "Crimes And Misdemeanors" introduces us to Andrew, a recently released convict (as a teenager, he killed his mother's abusive boyfriend, only for her to testify against him) who can only be treated at the Clinic Clinic and thus has no choice but to have Kelly Taylor inviting herself into his personal affairs. Specifically: when Dr. Jeff tells her Andrew's back story -- literally; the reason he's come to the Clinic Clinic is back pain from a beating he took from fellow inmates -- Kelly decides to involve Brandon, recommending that he write a piece about Andrew for the Beat so that someone will understand his plight and offer him a job. Will Brandon impress Andrew with his journalistic activism or piss him off with his ineptitude? (You can probably make an educated guess.) Brandon also gets embroiled in Steve's efforts to hook them up with a cute Peach Pit patron and her girlfriend, because Steve is always horny and rarely observant. Meanwhile, the David/Donna/Noah/Val love quadrangle finds a new way to annoy us, as Donna's grandmother faces a health crisis and uses everyone's visits to her sick bed to advocate for Donna and David to get back together. We remind Grandma that no, actually, David should die alone in our latest episode of Again With This!

BH S08.E18: Rebound Apr 16, 2018

Show notes

The premise of our latest A-plot seems to be that Kelly, Brandon, and Steve are having trouble getting through their current romantic woes because they just can't get any perspective on them. Never-before-seen characters to the rescue! At the clinic, Jeff -- and, for some reason, Kelly -- treat Ellen, a teenager who's gotten chlamydia whilst cheating on her boyfriend. Hearing Jeff lecture Ellen about how important trust is in the course of telling her why she needs to tell her boyfriend about her STI convinces Kelly that she should trust Jeff enough to tell him how Brandon broke her trust. (And honestly, if things progress between Jeff and Kelly at all, Val really deserves a thank-you muffin basket for pushing them together with all her self-interested meddling.) Steve's been bumming everyone out at the Beat office to such an extent that Brandon decides Steve should be the Beat's newest unqualified writer: he urges Steve to use his KEG connection to a guy named Harry to get to Harry's fiancée, Christy, who works for the Dodgers and could maybe hook Steve up to interview Mike Piazza. Little does Steve know he's bringing his heartbreak story into Christy's life just in time for her to be experiencing extreme cold feet. Can Steve and Brandon put Harry and Christy back together -- and maybe learn some lessons about their own recent relationship problems in the process? Elsewhere, David is still hanging out/blurring journalistic ethics lines with Jasper's Law; things get more complicated when the band's original keyboard player gets into a car accident driving drunk and decides to sue Noah for overserving him, forcing David to decide which of them he hates less, and what advantages he'll be giving up if he sides against the guy in the band that just bought his stupid song. Donna's latest stupid fashion project gets underway with a photo shoot starring a bratty child model and her overly indulgent momager, putting Donna in the position of being extremely holier-than-thou. Will this be the one time St. Donna doesn't triumph? You probably know the answer, but we're still getting into it in our latest Again With This podcast!

BH S08.E17: The Elephant’s Father Apr 09, 2018

Show notes

Kelly having FINALLY been forced to confront the extremely obvious truth about Brandon and Emma's "affair" and dumped him hard, the parting of Mr. and Mrs. The Gang has ripple effects on their friends (and poor Janet, who probably thought she'd accepted a job at a professional workplace where people keep their personal shit at home instead of screaming at photocopiers). Val, improbably assigned to atone for her bookmaking by doing community service at the Clinic Clinic, immediately starts seizing every available opportunity to keep Brandon and Kelly apart -- and with a new, young doctor having just started his rotation, opportunities are all around her. Donna, reeling from this latest evidence that love isn't real, vents to Noah and discovers his attitude toward Brandon's infidelity is that she should just get over it. But Steve doesn't have much time to devote to the breakup of his best friend and his first love because he's got his own problems -- or, rather, Carly does: her dad has had a heart attack, followed by quadruple bypass surgery, and she feels she needs to go back home to Montana to take care of him. Newly minted music critic David decides he's done criticizing, and gives himself the assignment of embedding with a local band called Jasper's Law and doing a story on their rise to prominence -- and why not, since he's equally qualified to do music journalism as he was to do music criticism. We discuss it all in our latest Again With This podcast!

BH S08.E16: Illegal Tender Apr 02, 2018

Show notes

After Emma lets it be known that she has tape-recorded evidence implicating Brandon in...her pants, Brandon finds himself in a quandary about how to proceed. Will he follow his own counsel and confess everything to Kelly in a sincere and searching WordPerfect doc? Will he heed Steve's advice not to say anything? Will he fail to correct Kelly's misapprehension of a phone call she overhears between Steve and Emma that convinces her the philanderer is actually Steve? If your answer to all of the above is "Brandon will definitely do the shittiest thing he can," you have obviously been watching along with us for lo these seven and a half seasons. David quickly learns that there's a downside to the life of a critic: answering for your challenging opinions to the artists whose careers you might hurt. But since David is actually the frustrated artist, maybe he and stage-frightened Jamie will be able to make beautiful music together -- at least until Val gets the club shut down for using it as her bookmaking HQ. Carly and Donna bring Zack for a fun outing at 8000 Sunset that quickly turns terrifying when the two adult women Zack has trusted to care for him can't resist the charms of a clown. We discuss all the terrible choices of "Illegal Tender" in the latest Again With This podcast!

BH S08.E15: Ready Or Not Mar 26, 2018

Show notes

After the Christmas party massacre, Kelly continues dealing with Dr. Monahan's retaliation against her -- which is lucky for Brandon, because now that he's finally had sex with Emma, she's decided it's her turn to get up his ass, constantly dropping obvious references to their illicit coitus which Brandon makes all the more obvious by tensing up about them. How far is Emma willing to go to get Brandon away from Kelly? Further than anyone else who's ever boned him could possibly imagine. The Val/David/Donna/Noah love quadrangle continues to irritate everyone in it (plus the rest of us), and relations between Noah and Val aren't likely to get any friendlier once Nat's old frenemy Duke returns with a new face and a new plan to make money off the After Dark's Sports Night. Finally, production costs have apparently required downsizing to the tune of Carly's house, so Carly and Zack move into the good old beach apartment, where Zack gets right to work improving upon Donna's fashion designs. We take you through in our latest Again With This podcast!

BH S08.E14: Santa Knows Mar 19, 2018

Show notes

Marvel at the fidelity of Brandon Walsh: it's taken him two and a half episodes of flirting with Emma to lower his defenses...and pants: yes, Emma finally succeeds in seducing Brandon -- although, really, is "succeed" the right word here? Brandon is consumed with guilt, but Kelly still has no idea, perhaps because Kelly's still dealing with Dr. Monahan and his roving Monahands. With Kelly's time at the Clinic Clinic winding down and her attempt to address Dr. Monahan directly regarding his harassment, she tries to raise the matter with a superior at the Foundation Foundation; will right win out over rape culture? The answer won't surprise you. David continues intervening with his work colleague Ben, trying to reunite him with his estranged parents for the holidays and even listening well enough to Ben to figure out when he's making shit up to try to be noble (and escape David's attempts to fix his life). Donna -- truly Santa's brightest and orangest little elf -- does her best to get Noah into the Christmas spirit, as do Steve and Carly for Zack when one of his crappy friends tells him there's no Santa. Get out the stockings you probably just put back into storage and join us for our Again With This podcast on "Santa Knows"!

BH S08.E13: Comic Relief Mar 12, 2018

Show notes

Kelly has so much going on, you guys! She's still 50% of the workforce at the Clinic Clinic, still fending off advances and innuendoes from Dr. Creep -- and now, on top of all that, she's also coming out of retirement to model for Donna! She's just so busy that she doesn't notice how much Brandon and Emma are flirting with each other, and how little they're bothering to hide it! Oh well. One of Val's new initiatives for the club turns out to be a comedy night, and apparently the venue has such a bad reputation that even in one of the country's comedy capitals, the talent is so thin that Noah and Val have to recruit Steve to perform. Speaking of performing: Val's putting in a bravura turn as someone who wants to bone David, achieving the desired result of making Donna and Noah jealous. When not helping Val slam her bed frame into the wall, David starts his shameful car wash job, simultaneously starting his career as a homeless gay kid's guardian angel. We discuss it all in the latest Again With This podcast!

BH S08.E12: Friends in Deed Mar 05, 2018

Show notes

David having stomped out of the club in a fit of pique and left Noah to deal with it, Noah gives himself a one-night trial run and decides that he sucks and hates it and that despite his differences with Val, he should take her up on her offer to return as manager. This complicates things for him and Donna, since Donna's not trying to get into another relationship with someone Val will be constantly needling her about -- though she's also sick of David's trifling ass freeloading all over her apartment eating her food and screwing up his new job at Khaki Nation. Brandon and Kelly are busy working on their relationships with new people: Kelly with Dr. Monahan at the Clinic Clinic, who's maybe not quite the saint she thought when he first met him; and Brandon with Emma Bennett, a hot new freelancer he's trying to recruit for the Beat. With Steve's paternity drama behind him, he can resume trying to have sex with Carly, though the demands on Carly's time are about to increase, meaning her availability for nooners may soon decrease dramatically. We discuss it all on our latest Again With This podcast!
