Ep. 835: Journey to 100 Live in Denver - Dylan Bowman + Jason Hardrath Jun 02, 2022
    Show notes

When a life-altering car accident upended Jason Hardrath's world, doctors said he'd never run again. Seven years later he has the most FKTs (Fastest Known Times) of anyone on earth. Now, he's on a journey to be the first person ever to set 100 FKT records.

When Jason was approaching his goal of 100 FKTs, he wanted to do something special for the last one. What sort of adventure would be worthy of number 100? After pouring over different options for routes and peaks he came across a challenge he couldn't resist, Washington's Bulger List, the highest 100 peaks in the state, a lifetime challenge for most that attempt it but Jason, being a teacher, only had 50 days in the summer to complete it.

Athletic Brewing was able to partner with the amazing folks at WZRD Media to film Jason’s adventure through the new documentary, Journey to 100. You can watch the film on YouTube and OutsideTV here.

Ep. 834: Walking from Morocco Back Home to England - James Scanlan May 31, 2022
    Show notes

In 2018, James Scanlan was living in Egypt but had grown tired of the Cairo dust. He looked west along the lines of latitude until he found Agadir in Morocco, packed a bag, took a plane and set off to walk back to his family home in Taunton, England.

He’s recently written a book about the first leg—A Moroccan Journey: Agadir to Tangier on Foot—a heady mix of blankly staring from café terraces and experiencing the warmth and hospitality of strangers as he tramped over 1,000 kilometers along the Atlantic coast of Morocco to Tangier.

Ep. 833: Retracing the Lewis & Clark Expedition Along the Missouri River in a Dugout Canoe - Revisited - Thomas Elpel May 26, 2022
    Show notes

    Originally aired - December 16, 2019

Thomas recently became an empty nester and decided a grand adventure was what he needed. He got together with Churchill Clark, the great-great-great-great grandson of Captain William Clark of the Lewis and Clark Expedition to build a dugout canoe named Bella from a 20 foot Douglas Fir.

He traced his path along the Missouri River all the way to the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, a 5-month expedition along the same route Lewis and Clark took when returning to the East Coast.

This epic tale includes everything from puppies, bow fishing, and flooded rivers, to quaint towns, and peaceful moments of solitude.

A book about the experience will be released in March of 2020. You can preorder it here:

Ep. 832: Kayaking the Mississippi River in Search of Plastic - Christian Shaw May 24, 2022
    Show notes

Christian is a waterman, adventurer, and storyteller discovering a path to make an impact in the world at the intersection of passion and purpose. Shaw is a teacher by nature and is passionate about sharing his skills and knowledge while inspiring others to join the movement for a healthier planet through his non-profit, Plastic Tides.

After realizing the devastating impact that plastic “nurdles” can have on a river system and the a proposed plastic manufacturing facility being built on the banks of the Mississippi River, Christian decided to travel to Louisiana to spend 10 days paddling 150 miles on the Mississippi from the proposed site of Formosa Plastics in St. James Parish to the mouth of the river to replicate the path these plastic nurdles would take.

The journey was documented and shared in real time through our social media channels which allowed them to foster support for #StopFormosaPlastics.

Ep. 829: From Collapsed Spine to Accomplished Climber - Revisited - Astrid Southam May 12, 2022
    Show notes

    Origianlly aired March 18, 2019

Adventure (ad·ven·ture): an unusual and exciting, typically hazardous, experience or activity.

That basically sums up life itself. The most unexpected, seemingly unfair, and hazardous things happen to us at every turn. We want adventure, but don't always love when it shows up. A life-altering injury is, by the definition above, an adventure. Well, it's not always exciting, but you get the picture.

To go from a collapsed spine at the age of 19 to being on a sponsored climbing expedition to the Ivory Coast is not an overnight journey, nor is it pleasant, but it is adventure. Astrid's story is one of hope, patience, and sheer grit to rise from what many would call a crippling situation (literally) to seeing the beauty in what happens to all of us at some point and accepting it as what life is all about.

Adventure doesn't always lead us down a peaceful path but teaches us to find peace no matter what path we're on.
