    Adult Onset Horsemanship

An informal and candid podcast discussing real world horsemanship with respected and experienced experts. Daniel is a guy who is good with horses. He has a background in cutting where he was predominantly involved in developing aged event horses and started over 1000 head of colts, many of whom went on to win lots of cash. A very bad horse wreck at a horse show, involving his niece, prompted him to begin working with people and showing them a no BS version of how to not get killed by their horses. He’s since worked with thousands more horses and people from varying disciplines and breeds including many last chance problem horses. In addition to his general horsemanship knowledge he is an internationally known expert on bits and how and why they function. He has a well rounded knowledge base of horsemanship and is working hard at his communication skills with his own species. His wife is a firm believer that he really likes the sound of his own voice and that is the real reason he’s started this podcast. http://dauphinhorsemanship.com/

AOH Ep. 29 Dr. Sheryl King PhD. Retired Prof Emeritus Southern Illinois University May 01, 2023
    Show notes

Let us know how we're doing. Please understand that we can't reply or see your info.

In this episode, we chat with Dr. Sheryl King PhD. Dr. King founded the Equine Program at Southern Illinois University and is now a wonderful speaker and advocate for the Horse World. She served decades on the Illinois Equine Council and shares my love of myth busting. We talk about a lot of different topics from colic to nutrition, to the digestive system in general. We get into research projects she was involved in and women in the STEM fields. Her PhD is actually in reproduction and we get more into "the kinky horse sex stuff" as she puts it in part 2.
I met Dr. King at the Best Horse Practices Summit and really enjoyed her presentation and our candid talks. She's a tremendous resource of knowledge and a free thinker to boot. I also personally enjoy her sense of humor. I hope y'all enjoy this first part of our discussion. As a result of this talk, she started a facebook page to post her memes and horse information on. Let us know how we're doing. Please understand that we can't reply or see your info.

I first ran across Montana Rancher on Youtube and immediately liked his delivery and subject matter. Trinity is an agricultural advocate who talks the realities of life in Montana and the horse and cow interests of a cowboy in that area. He has a deep understanding of the ranching and outfitting communities in that world, and a realistic perspective on the more modern world's encroachment.
We talk horses and cows, but also wolves, Yellowstone, the environment and environmental realities, and much more.

It was a pleasure as always to get to chat with Nahshon Cook. He's from urban Denver, Co and came across dressage in the way that suites him best, uniquely his own. Nahson is one of a kind and hard not to like. He's intelligent, philosophical, and insightful. It is on my bucket list to watch Blazing Saddles with him.
This chat ranges from rehabilitations and problemed horses to diversity within the horse industry as a whole. We talk about the different schools of dressage (Nahshon is originally from the French School) and some of his favorite old masters, and our thoughts on the times and different styles of horses of the day influencing the way the masters taught.
    He is the author of:

West Taylor is a very interesting and entertaining guy to talk with. He and his wife own the Wild West Mustang Ranch in Utah. He has been working with mustangs almost exclusively for about 15 years and has been heavily influenced by Dr. Steve Peters' teachings on the equine nervous systems and neuroscience.
West makes his primary purpose getting as many dopamine releases as possible. We have a very candid and fun conversation and I think you'd be hard pressed not to find West engaging. He will very soon be doing a virtual seminar with Dr. Steve Peters, and just recently gave a TEDx talk in Utah. You can find West through his social media links below

It's my privilege to talk with the incomparable Jec Ballou, whose motto is "fitness is the focus". Jec is the author of multiple books, including "101 Dressage Exercises for Horse and Rider", which is endorsed by the US Dressage Federation as a critical for everyone to own book.
Few people have the understanding of equine fitness, biomechanics, and rehabilitation that Jec possesses and I learned a lot through the course of this interview. She has several very highly reviewed books to her credit and offers online courses, clinics, and customized programs. She is also the host of the Best Horse Practices Podcast. Our guest this time should need no introduction. Jim Masterson has devised the Masterson Method and founded The Masterson Method, Integrated Equine Performance Bodywork. He's been all over the world teaching people how to help their horses release tension and it was my pleasure to watch him do his thing at The Best Horse Practices Summit this past October. Jim's also quick witted and funny and is the most humble person he knows. We had a great time and I find his approach very effective, easy to learn, and thought provoking. Please enjoy our chat.

Let us know how we're doing. Please understand that we can't reply or see your info.

This time we talk to Josh Nichol of Josh Nichol Relational Horsemanship. Josh and I will both be presenters at the Best Horse Practices Summit in October, so I thought it'd be nice to chat with him prior.
Much of Josh’s life has been spent developing his understanding and knowledge of horsemanship. Under the guidance of world-class mentors, Josh quickly learned his life’s calling: continually seeking and developing better methods of creating long-lasting relationships with one of God’s most fascinating and beautiful creatures. Driven by a passion for connecting with, and understanding the needs of horses, Josh has created a transformative approach to horsemanship: Relational Horsemanship.
Relational Horsemanship is built on a foundation of forming a deep connection with our horses by striving to understand their needs and empowering them to perform at peak capacity rather than dominating them. Refined over two decades of experience working with clients from across Canada and across multiple disciplines, Josh’s method has rapidly gained an international following among horse owners and equine professionals alike.

In this episode we talk with someone from the dark side. She feeds treats! Adele Shaw is an internationally recognized mentor and trainer focused on creating a positive relationship between horse and human through science-based training and care practices. Adele is a Certified Horse Behaviour Consultant with the IAABC and an endorsed trainer with the World Bitless Association. She trains utilizing choice and control, positive reinforcement, behavioral science, the humane hierarchy, LIMA, and so much more with horses. I really enjoyed our chat. We discuss all aspects of Operant Conditioning and the pros and cons as we see them. This is a very candid conversation and I sure got a lot off of my chest. It is cordial as well and it will be evident that while we have some differing views, we actually agree on way more than we disagree. Enjoy!

    Episode 19 March Q&A with Daniel Mar 14, 2022
    Show notes

Let us know how we're doing. Please understand that we can't reply or see your info.

We start this one off by discussing some things to keep in mind when choosing a riding instructor or a boarding facility.
Racing often gets a bad reputation, but is it all bad? Daniel talks about the importance in the Equine Industry that Racing has and how it actually does benefit all horse owners.
Most clinicians have colt starting videos out there. Why? Do those of us who start colts for a living think everyone is well qualified to start their own after watching a video or two? No, but those videos do provide necessary information that all horse owners/riders should know.
Next we progress into talking about some of my favorite warm up exercises, and things to consider prior to the intense parts of a ride.
Someone asked me a couple of bit questions and I go way deep into nervous and foamy mouths. Why do horses sometimes get a foamy mouth and what does it mean? What can you do to help a horse that seems agitated by the bit? We'll discuss at length.
Continuing with the bit theme, we then move on to progressing a horse from a snaffle into a shanked bit, even if they are older. There is a method to the madness and this is an area that Daniel really enjoys discussing.
Lastly, we get into an OTTB who is being transitioned into and English horse. He rides around nice and relaxed on a loose rein, but when the reins are taken up, he takes off. What's the deal and how do you fix something like that? Find out.
If you aren't aware, Daniel is internationally known for his deep understanding of bits and the anatomy affected by bits. He has an encyclopedic video on the subject for sale. We'll be rebranding and retitling the video in the near future and the remaining copies with the old title are on sale. Enter coupon code "rebranding" for 30% off of the very best source of information on bits available.

Here's a link to a video on our Youtube channel that we promised to provide that might help with that transition of going from two hands to one.
