    Adult Onset Horsemanship

An informal and candid podcast discussing real world horsemanship with respected and experienced experts. Daniel is a guy who is good with horses. He has a background in cutting where he was predominantly involved in developing aged event horses and started over 1000 head of colts, many of whom went on to win lots of cash. A very bad horse wreck at a horse show, involving his niece, prompted him to begin working with people and showing them a no BS version of how to not get killed by their horses. He’s since worked with thousands more horses and people from varying disciplines and breeds including many last chance problem horses. In addition to his general horsemanship knowledge he is an internationally known expert on bits and how and why they function. He has a well rounded knowledge base of horsemanship and is working hard at his communication skills with his own species. His wife is a firm believer that he really likes the sound of his own voice and that is the real reason he’s started this podcast. http://dauphinhorsemanship.com/

Adult Onset Horsemanship Ep. 18 Wilson Capron Custom Bit and Spur Maker Feb 23, 2022
    Show notes

Let us know how we're doing. Please understand that we can't reply or see your info.

Wilson Capron has been on my radar as a custom bit maker for years now. His stuff truly takes function and blends into it artistry and craftsmanship that is second to none. I really admire his eye for balance and style. He's also pretty good at explaining and showing how he goes about what he does.
When I finished up the video on bits and bitting, I reached out to him to see if he wouldn't mind giving it a look. We hit it off on that phone call and I think you'll enjoy the type of banter that he and I have in this interview.
If you ever use a bit or a spur, or have any interest in cool tack, you really need to listen to this one. Wilson is also a member of the Traditional Cowboy Arts Association and shows his work for the TCAA and at other venues as well.

It was my pleasure to chat with one of my favorite people in the horse world in this episode of Adult Onset Horsemanship Podcast. Dr. Joe Gotti spent his career as a Prof. of Animal Science at Stephen F. Austin State University. He founded their Equine Sciences program, as well as the Intercollegiate Equestrian Team and the Intercollegiate Stockhorse Team. Dr. Gotti is one of those rare individuals that is responsible for molding the future generations of the Equine Industry. He's also quite the character, as you'll see. Listen in as we discuss what decades of learning about horses has produced.

Adult Onset Horsemanship Ep. 16 Feb. Q & A on Science, Research, and Debunking Realities Feb 08, 2022
    Show notes

Let us know how we're doing. Please understand that we can't reply or see your info.

For our Feb Q & A, Daniel answers a couple of questions from our Facebook Group, "Bits, Spurs, and Good Sense". We talk about the hackamore vs the snaffle and refute a couple of criticisms about Dr. Robert M. Miller's Foal Imprinting ideas with the importance of context. Daniel answers another question about a book on the horse's brain which leads us down a rabbit hole. He gets deep into what Science and the Scientific Method is. He talks about some personal experiences he's had with the people behind the research and how their experiences, or lack of experiences can affect the outcomes. He gets neck deep into Associative Learning Theory and it's children, Classical and Operant Conditioning. He'll talk about some real world examples of each and the practical side of things. He'll pay special attention to positive reinforcement also.
In the final segment, he talks about what debunking a long standing scientific theory really would entail and if that standard really is met when people like to say things have been debunked. He finishes by giving some tips on these scientific studies and looking up the research for yourself. He'll tell you some places to find this type of research, how to critically analyze it when you find it, and some common flaws to look for that may nullify what you're reading and waste your time. If you're interested in the science of behavioral conditioning, this one's for you.

Adult Onset Horsemanship Ep. 15 Bruce Sandifer Californio Traditionalist Jan 24, 2022
    Show notes

Let us know how we're doing. Please understand that we can't reply or see your info.

Bruce Sandifer is one of the most knowledgeable guys going teaching the ways of the Californio Traditions and about making Traditional Bridlehorses. He's also a realist and we have a very candid conversation about ideals vs realities. I learned a lot from him and find this approach to be a very attractive one, with a resulting bridlehorse that is as much a work of art as a trained animal. If you're the least bit interested in the why's and how's of jaquima to freno, you really need to give this one a listen.
Bruce is also a founder of the International Association for the Preservation of Early Californio Bridlehorses and Stockmanship. This group exists to preserve and protect an essential and threatened part of both California and western United States history: the method of horsemanship and stockmanship developed by the early Californios.
Bruce gives workshops and lessons and his homebase is Santa Barbara, California. You can find him via these links:

Adult Onset Horsemanship Ep. 14 Dr. Robert M. Miller DVM Jan 17, 2022
    Show notes

Let us know how we're doing. Please understand that we can't reply or see your info.

One of the great things about starting this podcast, besides the sponsors, is that it causes me to reach out to people that I never would have engaged otherwise. Dr. Miller is a pioneer. He had a successful career as a mixed practice veterinarian. He very generously tells us the story of his life, including meeting his wife and the fortuitous trip that lead them to the place they'd set up their lives. We talked about the origination of his Foal Imprint Training and how he goes about it. He also talks about a few things that people tend to get wrong about imprinting.
Within the equine community, Dr. Miller is a well known cartoonist/humorist also. A prolific author, he's written a couple of dozen books, ranging from collections of his drawings to non-fiction on imprint training and equine behavior. He has toured the world speaking and teaching about horses, mules, and horsemanship. He's also the co-founder of the concept and clinics behind Light Hands Horsemanship.
On a personal note Dr. Miller is an incredibly generous and humble man. I was blown away by how approachable he is and how generous he was with his time. At nearly 95 years young, I was worried that he might tire and was very conscious of how much of their time I was getting. He's as lucid as you or I and sharper than most by a ways. Our conversation lasted over 3 hours in total, though the latter half was more personal in nature and off the record. I would certainly be wrong if I were to talk solely about Dr. Miller and not mention his lovely young wife, Mrs. Deb. She sat beside him the whole time and added in her own recollections throughout. Though we were conversing via computer, I felt like I was right there in their kitchen having coffee and biscuits and a candid chat about their lives, and they had no idea how legendary a figure he is. You can find Dr. Miller's books at his website:

Adult Onset Horsemanship Ep. 13 Amy Skinner Jan 10, 2022
    Show notes

Let us know how we're doing. Please understand that we can't reply or see your info.

In this episode we talk with Amy Skinner. Amy strives to blend horsemanship and classical dressage for a relaxed partnership based in feel. She has a background in Classical Dressage, having spent formative years with Theresa Doherty and now bills herself as a Postural Rehabilitator. She still works with lots of dressage horses, but she's also studied horsemanship principles under Brent Graef and you'll know she understands feel by the frustration that oozes from her voice when talking about those horses needing rehabilitation because of those riders without feel.
Amy offers lessons, both on and off-site. She does clinics, consults, rehab work, colt starting, and problem solving. She is an avid writer and offers many great thoughts and reflections via her facebook posts, and she's also written two books, available on her website.
She's a free-thinking young lady who has the best interests of the horse as her main goal. She's also got a great sense of humor and an interesting take on many subjects. This was a fun one.

For this episode, Daniel delves into several interesting topics. He discusses his views on Nurture vs Nature and some of the interesting genetics that he's encountered. He offers some tips on setting goals and resolutions and better habits to advance your horsemanship in the new year. Then, we get into a horse's intuition and discuss what straightness is and isn't. He discusses different rein types and sidepulls vs riding in a halter or a hackamore. Lastly, he gives some tips for novices facing frustration and pecking order disputes with their pony, and then finishes up with teaching your horse a cue to relax when riding. This one's packed with good info and tips to help your horsemanship grow in a practical way.

In this episode of AOH, we turn the tables and interview another interviewer. Maddy Butcher has been a journalist for most of her career, writing for such news outlets as the Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post. In 2008 she became a bit more horse-centric and began the newsletter, The Nicker News. She's since founded Cayuse Communications, the Best Horse Practices Summit and Best Horse Practices Podcast, and written 3 books: A Rider's Reader, Horse Head, and Beasts of Being. She's not only had the opportunity to pick the brains of some of the industry's most influential people, but she's legitimately one of them herself.

Let us know how we're doing. Please understand that we can't reply or see your info.

I'm ecstatic to have Chris Gregory, CJF, FWCF, ASF, for this episode. Chris is possibly the only person in the world to have the highest certifications of 3 major internationally recognized farrier associations. He is the founder of the Heartland Horseshoeing School, author of Gregory's Textbook of Farriery, and has been one of the most sought after international farrier clinicians for a long time. In truth, I'll start the podcast listing his resume, titles, and accomplishments and it takes me about a minute to list off all of them. If you are curious about the hoof care of your horse at all, you really need to listen to one of the world's most recognized experts on the subject.

    Adult Onset Horsemanship Ep. 9 December Q & A Dec 06, 2021
    Show notes

Let us know how we're doing. Please understand that we can't reply or see your info.

As this is the first episode released in December, it's a Q & A, as will be our pattern.
Daniel takes these questions from his facebook group, Bits, Spurs, and Good Sense. We'd love to have you if you'd like to join.
    https://www.facebook.com/groups/795178083941287
The topics covered in this episode are:

    • the differences between horses, mules, and donkeys
    • riding etiquette in large groups, trail rides, and warm up arenas
    • bringing a horse back from a long layoff
    • laying a horse down
    • dealing with a horse that has an imperfect past, or holes in its foundation

My family and I hope each of you has a Merry Christmas (or whichever Holiday you celebrate) and a Blessed New Year! If you are still gift shopping for a horse lover, we'd like to recommend our video on bits and bitting, "More Than a Bit... o' Information." I truly believe that it's the very best source of information on bits and how they are best used available today. Use the offer code, "King of Kings" for 20% off your order.
