    Adult Onset Horsemanship

An informal and candid podcast discussing real world horsemanship with respected and experienced experts. Daniel is a guy who is good with horses. He has a background in cutting where he was predominantly involved in developing aged event horses and started over 1000 head of colts, many of whom went on to win lots of cash. A very bad horse wreck at a horse show, involving his niece, prompted him to begin working with people and showing them a no BS version of how to not get killed by their horses. He’s since worked with thousands more horses and people from varying disciplines and breeds including many last chance problem horses. In addition to his general horsemanship knowledge he is an internationally known expert on bits and how and why they function. He has a well rounded knowledge base of horsemanship and is working hard at his communication skills with his own species. His wife is a firm believer that he really likes the sound of his own voice and that is the real reason he’s started this podcast. http://dauphinhorsemanship.com/

Let us know how we're doing. Please understand that we can't reply or see your info.

This week I interview the man who first had me as a guest on his podcast and helped catalyze this whole podcasting journey for me, John Harrer. John has lived most of his life in Bakersfield, Ca, and has been actively chronicling horse events and his own horsemanship journey since 2012. He's had the unique opportunity to ride with and talk with some of the biggest names in the industry and has even been a Mustang Makeover Competitor. John is easy to listen to and has quite a few interesting stories to share. He even took the liberty to use his great technological experience to make an intro and outro for AOH and I'm truly grateful to him. Enjoy our conversation. Adult Onset Horsemanship Ep. 7 Geoff Tucker D.V.M. Nov 22, 2021
    Show notes

Let us know how we're doing. Please understand that we can't reply or see your info.

Dr. Geoff Tucker is an Equine Veterinarian who has specialized in Equine Dentistry since the mid 90's and has just recently passed his 75,000th dental exam. He gives us some insight into what he's learned about the inside of a horse's mouth and best way to care for it. He has a special way of doing his work, using sedation only about 3% of the time and no speculum. To be honest though, most of this podcast episode focuses on nutrition in horses. He discusses how things actually function within the equine gut. The microbiome is a big part of this talk, as is how the various things we feed actually affect the horse once digested. While this conversation is entertaining, I think the information provided within is a MUST LISTEN for any conscientious horse owner. Neither Dr. Tucker nor I are sponsored by any companies, nor do we have any financial gain to be made by what we say. We're simply interested in getting high quality information out there so that horse enthusiasts can make more informed decisions, to be better advocates for the horse. Doc T has a website called https://www.thehorsesadvocate.com/ where subscribers can learn from and interact with him. Additionally, Doc T has an equine dentistry school found here, https://horsemanshipdentistryschool.com
He also has a facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/TheHorsesAdvocate
Dr. Tucker is a true wealth of information and a true advocate for the horse. We hope you enjoy this conversation.

In this episode, Daniel talks with Gerry Cox. Gerry and his wife Kathleen own and operate Mountain House Stables. You've very likely seen one of their coffee mugs floating around. Gerry has lead a very interesting life. As a young man he helped with the Alaskan Pipeline and was an Ice Road Trucker, while living in a small cabin in the mountains. Gerry moved to Washington, with his wife Kathleen, and they founded Mountain House Stables. This wonderful wife of his has allowed this man to have not one, but two places with a roping arena in the front yard. Anyway, Gerry has worked with mustangs, both as a two time top 3 winner of the Extreme Mustang Makeover, and as a consultant for the Border Patrol Project Noble Mustang. A clinician himself, Gerry is always learning and setting his own ego aside. As a part of that, he regularly has other clinicians out to his place to do clinics for him and his customers. These friends of his include Craig Cameron, Jim Anderson, Dan James, and others. Gerry gives a pretty cool interview with several humorous tangents and lots of lessons learned. We hope you enjoy! You can find Gerry at the following links. He's very easy to talk with and happy to help anyone:

Let us know how we're doing. Please understand that we can't reply or see your info.

In this episode of AOH, we interview Mrs. Claire Dupuis of Meaux, France. Claire has had an interesting life from being a Ring Sport Dog Breeder (Malinois) to a photographer, horse trainer, and saddle fitter and reseller. I've known Claire for about 7 years when I began coaching her from across the pond on a horse she was having trouble with. I thought that her perspective is pretty unique and interesting and she'd make a great interview. Claire didn't disappoint.

For this episode of AOH Daniel takes a few questions from his facebook group, Bits, Spurs, and Good Sense. He spends about 20 minutes on each one, going in depth on his thoughts on each topic. Question 1 is about chain mouth bits and gag bits. Question 2 is about the leadership approach and the need for dominating the horse. Question 3 is about contact and connection via the reins. We finish by talking about cold-backed horses and those that randomly buck. Hope you enjoy!

Adult Onset Horsemanship Ep. 3 Jay Finn Oct 25, 2021

Let us know how we're doing. Please understand that we can't reply or see your info.

For episode 3, my guest is Jay Finn of Abita Springs, La. Jay and his fiance, Willow, run Finn Sport and Performance Horses. Jay specializes in Reining and Reined Cowhorse training. He started early, so at his young, tender age of 30, he's already had success in the show pen. Jay worked for Josh Lyons for a year, and has done a bunch of clinics with and without Josh too. Additionally, Jay is a farrier, and I pick his brain on some of the noteworthy things that his unique perspective of training and shoeing provides. I've known Jay for about 10 years and he's a really nice guy with a great outlook and a bright future in the industry. You can learn more about, or contact Jay Finn at his website and Facebook pages:

Adult Onset Horsemanship Ep. 2 Heather Northcutt Oct 18, 2021
    Show notes

Let us know how we're doing. Please understand that we can't reply or see your info.

In this episode Daniel interviews a former apprentice, Heather Northcutt. Heather has a degree in Equine Science from William Woods University and even taught there for a few years after graduation. She has experience with many breeds and disciplines, has won a World Championship in Jr. Ranch Trail, has been a ring steward at the biggest of shows, and also judges many of them. I've often said that some of the best and worst people in the world are in the horse business and I definitely count Heather as one of the best.
Join us as we talk about the good old days and share several humorous and embarrassing stories, as well as talk about the things Heather has learned as a Judge and Ring Steward over the last 13 years. She and her husband Ty also own Southern Influence Kennels, where they breed and train top quality bird dogs. Toward the end of the interview, Ty joins us and tells a very funny story about a Spanish fighting bull that got in with their cows a few years back. We get into dogs and cats somewhat as well. You can find Heather and Ty via their website: https://southerninfluencekennels.com/
During this interview, I also discuss a true event from my own past that became a short story. The link to that short story is: https://www.dauphinhorsemanship.com/angel-short-story-entertaining-and-vastly-true/

Adult Onset Horsemanship Ep. 1 My wife interviews me Oct 02, 2021
    Show notes

Let us know how we're doing. Please understand that we can't reply or see your info.

For our initial offering, we thought that a more personal touch was needed. My wife will be conducting the interview this time and I'll be the subject. We discuss our life. We laugh. We flirt. We talk about some of our personal horses and just our life in general. It is our intention to have interesting discussions with interesting people about horses. It is also our goal, however, that these be easy going, informal, and candid discussions with lots of humor.
I know the audio quality is poor for this one and we'll certainly be working on that aspect as we have new episodes.
