061. CC2: House of Sky and Breath: Initial Reactions Feb 28, 2022

Show notes

ACOFAE Podcast presents: Crescent City: House of Sky and Breath

Well. That was unexpected. And exhausting.

There is so much to say that Laura Marie and Jessica Marie cannot possibly say it all in one episode, so no speculation about where the plot could go and why just yet (otherwise we'd be here for hours.) Laura Marie and Jessica Marie are discussing what's on page and there is a lot. New characters, storylines, confirmations, reveals, and a major major shift in focus from HOEAB that leaves the hosts a bit miffed are all on the table. Opinions may differ, but we can all agree on one thing: we'd pay a lot to be blindfolded by ******. [redacted]

Have you missed hearing Jessica Marie squeak with delight over a book? Are you looking for a retelling that has CW drama as well as smarts? Well the wait is over with Electric Idol! 059. Crescent City: What we know so far: Hunt "Kite Man" Athalar. Feb 14, 2022

Show notes

ACOFAE Podcast presents: Crescent City: House of Earth and Blood (Part II)

Light it up Danika! Light it up! Light it up! Light it up!

Have you forgotten everything about Crescent City (House of Earth and Blood) except the pain and intense ugly crying? Worry not because Laura Marie and Jessica Marie have nailed down the (probably not all of them, the book is thicc) details and are ready to discuss why a DC villain is the only way that Hunt can be seen from now on. No really. There are also discussions about friendships, Easter eggs, and general gushing about Bryce. This was recorded BEFORE the leak was released. So no worries about any sort of spoilers. It's all very interesting.

058. A Psalm of Storms and Silence: “You deserve to be as angry as you need." Feb 07, 2022

Show notes

ACOFAE Podcast presents: A Psalm of Storms and Silence

You will not be able to stop thinking about this book.

Gather round as Karina, Malik, Hanan, and Farid's story continues and concludes in ways that are as unexpected as they are powerful. Hanan is "alive" and Farid will do anything to keep it that way, even letting the world burn. This is a story that is about more than magic, adventure, friendship and sisterhood. It's about surviving trauma and breaking free of the past. Ancient cities are discovered, magic is unleashed, and deep and concerning issues are touched on and dealt with respect and sensitivity. Is the epilogue satisfying? Laura Marie and Jessica Marie say yes, what do you say?

TW / CW: Refugee experiences, human trafficiking, police brutality, emotional & physical child abuse, sexual assault, grooming, anxiety, panic attack, self-harm & self-harm ideation, grief & loss depiction (theme), loss of parents, death of a sister recounted, hostage situation, kidnapping & attempted kidnapping, murder & attempted murder

057. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind: "Who you are now is based on the worst moments of your life also." Jan 31, 2022

Show notes

ACOFAE Podcast presents: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

"Everyone needs a little sunshine..."
A movie that can be taken a lot of different ways, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind is a favorite re-watch for Laura Marie and a new watch for Jessica Marie, because really what were we all doing in 2004 anyway? Perfect for the Valentine's Day season and perfect any other time as well, Eternal Sunshine makes you think, makes you feel, makes you want to remember and maybe just maybe makes you want to try again. It is about fate? Is it a happy ending? It is incredibly sad? Who can say?

"Blessed are the forgetful, for they get the better even of their blunders."

056. A Touch of Darkness AND Neon Gods: "Once I eliminated that, I went 'Oh! this is a really good meaty story' " Jan 17, 2022

Show notes

ACOFAE Podcast presents: A Touch of Darkness and Neon Gods

You know how you can have different versions of the same thing, and both of those versions are pretty good, and you enjoy them separately, but you absolutely prefer one over the other? This is the situation Laura Marie and Jessica Marie find themselves in as they compare and contrast (no competition here!) AToD and Neon Gods. Laura Marie prefers Neon Gods and Jessica Marie prefers AToD and the reasons are probably what you would and would not expect. Aggressive fingering, shivering, yeahhhhhs, and the recommendation to maybe read this one in print, Laura Marie and Jessica Marie are trash for Hades and Persephone and always will be.

Show notes

ACOFAE Podcast presents: A Song of Wraiths and Ruin

A book that doesn't seem to get the attention it deserves, A Song of Wraiths and Ruin is a story that you have and haven't heard before in the absolute best way.
The Solstasia Festival happens only once every 50 years and Princess Karina is in the center of it all. A beautiful exploration of grief and duty, love and ambition, the gods are real and active in Ziran and Malik can see them all. The book begins with the author listing the content and trigger warnings, in the print AND audio versions, and conversations are had and questions are raised. Join Laura Marie and Jessica Marie as they forever chant the praises of strong female characters AND delight in Malik being a different kind of male MC.

Show notes

ACOFAE Podcast presents: We Free the Stars

Back to Arawiya, back to Zafira, back to Nasir, and back to the story that is so much more than a love story. The women are shining as they explore grief, love, forgiveness, and they never shy away from a fight. Nasir’s poetry drives We Free the Stars to its conclusion that had Laura Marie and Jessica Marie shaking their heads a bit while the Jawarat makes a good point: no one talks about the heroes missing the villains.

TW / CW: general discussions surrounding grief and trauma
