079. A Forbidden Fate: Spoiler-Free with the author herself, Kaven! Jul 25, 2022

Show notes

ACOFAE Podcast Presents: A Forbidden Fate: Spoiler-Free with the author herself, Kaven!

This episode is SPOILER-FREE and focuses on Kaven Hirning's new book A Forbidden Fate. This episode was originally 3 HOURS LONG. This episode has about 1.5 hours of HOSAB discussion that was cut. ALL THAT TO SAY: ACOFAE welcomes back Kaven as she discusses her new book A Forbidden Fate. Described as a love letter to her fans, AFF is a delightful frolic through the woods with friends that started as a standalone and ended as a trilogy. Kaven shares her inspiration that led to the plot, tidbits about publishing, the writing process, and little teasers about book 2. The episode may seem a bit chaotic (is anyone surprised? The three of us are back together), but you should hear the rough cut. Chrissy wake up!

078. Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Movie: "He's a blood sucking fiend from beyond the grave!" Jul 18, 2022

Show notes

ACOFAE Podcast Presents: Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Movie: "He's a blood sucking fiend from beyond the grave!"

"All I want to do is graduate from high school, go to Europe, marry Christian Slater, and die."
Buffy Summers has a plan. It includes the school dance and cheer practice and definitely like for sure totally does NOT include vampires, Luke Perry, and a guy named Merrick. Welcome to 1992's Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Leggings have shorts over them, a yellow leather jacket is the rage, and the vampires are actually hilarious (looking at you Paul). The cast is immaculate (really Google it) and the stories of what was going behind the scenes make this classic both entertaining and thought provoking as well as FUN. This movie is fun. The vampires float. And have giant ears. Fun.
"Does the word DUH! mean anything to you?"- Buffy Summers.

076. Shadowhunter Academy: Back with old friends, plus Daddy Will Herondale. Jul 04, 2022

Show notes

ACOFAE Podcast Presents: Shadowhunter Academy: Back with old friends, plus Daddy Will Herondale.

"If the author writes it you should read it" is one of many sayings here at ACOFAE. Applying that to Shadowhunters might seem like a tall order but the payoff is worth it: Welcome to Shadowhunter Academy. Join Simon as he tries to figure out who he is, who he was, and who he will be as he takes classes to become a Shadowhunter and get his memories back, or die. Along the way, lectures are given by characters we know and love that give important context to the events of The Mortal Instruments and beyond. Remember when Jessica Marie didn't like Simon?! Remember that?! 10+ books later and Simon is the MC and we love him for it.
Editor's note: the audio is not excellent. The issue has been fixed.

075. A Touch of Ruin/A Game of Retribution: Miscommunication at its finest? Jun 27, 2022

Show notes

ACOFAE Podcast Presents: A Touch of Ruin/A Game of Retribution: Miscommunication at its finest?

Hades is a busy man. He's either drinking, not communicating with Persephone, trying to manage the underworld/various clubs/torturing people/not sleeping/plotting, or brooding. Usually all of those things at once. Hades is in charge in A Game of Retribution and wastes no time showing the reader exactly what is going on. While Persephone deals with being in the public eye, Hades has his own issues that will determine their future together. AGoR weaves in A Touch of Ruin almost perfectly so that dialogue and scenes are given a new breath of life as we see things from Hades perspective. Plots, plots, and PLOT are the name of the game while retribution is the goal.

074. The Jasmine Throne: Boss B*tch Bhumika does the damn thing. Jun 20, 2022

Show notes

ACOFAE Podcast Presents: The Jasmine Throne: Boss B*tch Bhumika does the damn thing.

If you were fascinated to see the human breast might, kind of, sort of look like a flower, then you will LOVE this book. Really. That is the vibe.

The Emperor is new and fervently religious. The Princess is rebellious and loves her country. Men are in power. Men make decisions. Men have decided the Princess is to be exiled. Men cannot tame the power of the land and its people, even though they are trying. Princess Malini is out of options and her new maidservant, Priya, is a breath of new life. Politics are front and central here as the story of a conquered people, religion, and the unexpected loyalty of the land move in tandem with Emperor Chandra's horrific plans: Purify the women. Burn the women. How about they rise up instead?!

073. Wicked Beauty: “Use your words. Be explicit." Jun 13, 2022

Show notes

ACOFAE Podcast Presents: Wicked Beauty: “Use your words. Be explicit."

Are you ready to jump back into the Dark Olympus series? Are you ready to love Helen? Do you love logical conflicted men? What about men that are doers and not thinkers? Perfect. Achilles and Patroclus are working as a team to win the title of Ares for Achilles but Helen isn't a prize to be won, and soon everyone will know it. Helen, with battles public and private, is determined to win Ares and take charge of her life. But a chance meeting, forced proximity, and the "we can protect you better" trope all come to play in this steamy reimagining. Very steamy. Lots of showering and sheet changing. Laura Marie and Jessica Marie are tired just thinking about it.

ACOFAE Podcast presents: Strictly Ballroom

"The Beginning is the End is the Beginning." - Smashing Pumpkins.

ACOFAE has saved the first film in the Red Curtain Trilogy for the last: Strictly Ballroom. Have you seen this absolute gem of a film? Probably not. Most people haven't. But that is why ACOFAE is here! Do you love Baz? Dancing? Color? Drama? The 90's? No really, the 90's. In Australia. Now add in stage makeup and costumes, a Dirty Dancing appreciation montage, AND a dramatic final dance number. It's a classic for every single right reason. See where it all began and see where the ideas for Moulin Rouge! and Romeo + Juliet were just starting to form. It's magnificent. "Listen to the rhythm, don't be scared!"
