    Show notes

High functioning anxiety and perfectionism can often look like… Being well put together, being high achieving, being reliable, helpful, successful, organized, and the list goes on! But what’s actually going on on the inside can look much more like… Lots of overthinking, feeling anxious, needing to feel in control, having an immense fear of failure, not being able to say no, and not being able to relax without feeling a whole ton of guilt.

In this episode, I chat with Dr. Carolyn Rubenstein, who is a licensed psychologist and someone who has a wealth of knowledge when it comes to high functioning anxiety and perfectionism. Her knowledge comes from her own personal experience, and also from her experiences in working with clients who struggle with high-functioning anxiety, perfectionism, and burnout.

She joins me to further dive into this topic, and she shares some more helpful tips and tools to help you create new and healthy habits to experience less anxiety and more peace. And her tips are so practical and actionable!

021: Trauma Healing (and Not All Anxiety is Trauma) With Dr. Megan Johnson May 09, 2022
    Show notes

Trauma can feel like having frequent obsessive thoughts about the traumatic events, having dreams, nightmares, or flashbacks about the traumatic event, experiencing a sudden shift in your world view, believing that most things are bad and most people have bad intentions, avoiding all reminders of your trauma, including people, places, smells, and similar circumstances, shutting down when things feel stressful because life feels too overwhelming most of the time, and difficulty having functional relationships because of the ever-present sense of a lack of safety with others.

It can also feel like experiencing depression and anxiety, racing and unwelcome thoughts, foggy thoughts or frequent dissociation, upset stomach, sweaty palms or underarms, unexplained physical symptoms, or getting easily sidetracked with reminders of your trauma.

Dr. Megan Johnson is a clinical psychologist who helps individuals heal from trauma and live a calm and connected life. At the core of the work she does, she helps people break free from their trauma and feel safe in their mind and in their body. In this episode, Megan dives into what trauma is and what it can look like, how not all anxiety is trauma, she helps to define anxiety versus trauma, what trauma healing looks like, the role of self-care, and the different treatments for trauma.

020: How to Keep Moving Forward on Your Anxiety Recovery Journey May 02, 2022
    Show notes

When you’re struggling with the same things day in and day out, it can be incredibly hard to find the motivation to continue to choose to put in the work and heal. I know, because there were so many days when I felt like no matter what I did, I continued to face the anxious thoughts, the symptoms, panic, and fears. And some days, it honestly made me want to just call it quits. And when I’d have good days, or even weeks, or incredible wins, it often felt like a tease because the tough moments continued to come.

There were so many points during my recovery that I remember thinking… How did I get here? I’ve wasted so much of my life and my time. What am I doing wrong? What am I missing? Am I ever going to live the life that I’ve been working towards? And at times, I was so convinced that I needed to do something drastic in order to recover because I felt like everything I had been doing clearly wasn’t working or enough.

In this episode, I'm sharing 4 powerful steps that you can take to help keep you moving forward on your recovery journey.

019: Understanding OCD (and the Overlap Between OCD & Anxiety Disorders) With Lauren Rosen Apr 25, 2022
    Show notes

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a diagnosis that is often incredibly misunderstood. And a big part of that is due to how OCD is spoken about. It’s a term that is often thrown around in relation to talking about cleanliness or tidiness, but OCD is a disorder that causes significant distress or impairment in the life of someone who is struggling with it.

I sat down with Lauren Rosen, a licensed marriage and family therapist, whose focus is treating OCD, anxiety disorders, and eating disorders, because she has a wealth of knowledge surrounding OCD and evidence-based treatment of OCD. And Lauren used to struggle with OCD herself. In our conversation, Lauren dives into what OCD is, the overlap between OCD and anxiety disorders, her personal experience with OCD, and she shares lots of helpful tips, tools, and insights for healing.

    You may thoughts like...

I don’t want to get out of bed. I’m already tired/anxious.

I have so much to do today! How the heck am I going to get any of it done feeling this way?

    I already feel anxious!

A panic attack already? How is this even possible?

If any of these thoughts resonate with you, this episode will be hugely helpful to you!

017: Amy's Journey With Little t Trauma & Anxiety With Amy Tran Apr 11, 2022
    Show notes

Trauma is a word that gets thrown around a lot in the mental health space, and I really want to create some clarity surrounding trauma and what it actually is, what it can look like, and also share some helpful tips on how to navigate healing from trauma. There are all different types of trauma. And little t trauma is often something that you don’t hear much about. So I invited Amy Tran on A Healthy Push podcast to talk about little t trauma to help bring some awareness to a topic that is lacking some much needed attention.

Amy Tran has a master’s degree in clinical psychology and she is currently training to become a psychologist, and a lot of Amy’s focus is on working with children and adolescents. Amy and I connected on Instagram a while back and I have been so inspired by her work and what she shares. She shares lots of helpful tips, tools, and practices on many different mental health topics, and what I love about Amy is that she often gets really real and really honest about her own mental health. And in this conversation, we dive into Amy’s personal experience with trauma, and she also shares lots of helpful information and tools relating to healing from trauma.

016: Being Diagnosed With Panic Disorder & Agoraphobia Isn't a Life Sentence Apr 04, 2022
    Show notes

Even though it was well over a decade ago, I still remember the day that I was diagnosed with severe panic disorder and agoraphobia. And even though I already knew what I was struggling with before being formally diagnosed by my therapist, seeing my diagnoses written on paper made me feel incredibly hopeless and scared. Like somehow being diagnosed changed something, even though it had changed nothing.

After being diagnosed, I immediately began to think things like… Is this something that I’ll struggle with for the rest of my life? Can I overcome it? What if medication doesn’t work? What if things get worse? What if I can’t continue to work or go to school?

In this episode, I want to share with you what panic disorder and agoraphobia actually looks like. And I also want to give you so much hope for what your life can look like. Because the truth is that you are the author of the stories that you create, and you can start creating the life you want and deserve to live by changing the stories you're telling yourself.
