A Few Screws Loose: The Podcast

Dan and Paul are both men of color who suffer from, and openly talk about their mental illnesses. The goal of this podcast is to help further destigmatize mental illness in minority communities where we’re traditionally taught to suffer in silence. Show notes

In this episode of "A Few Screws Loose" Dan and P From Charlotte talk about their first visits to psychiatrists, which medications we were prescribed, and how we reacted to these medications. P also explains some of the differences between psychologists, psychiatrists, and counselors/social workers. Dan shares how he was prescribed Seroquel for insomnia and why that was an irresponsible choice of medication by his doctor. He also details his worst panic attack to date. P talks about how he was prescribed numerous medications at their max dosages to be taken simultaneously. This cocktail of medication caused P to get alarmingly worse, even causing him to self-harm with no prior history of self-harm. Some of these medications should never be prescribed together. Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) Mar 30, 2019
    Show notes

Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) affects more than 10 million people in the United States alone and can be linked to other psychiatric disorders such as anxiety disorders, OCD, anorexia and bulimia to name a few. The perceived flaws are often obsessed over even if no one else notices them and can lead to societal withdrawal, multiple cosmetic surgeries, or attempts to disguise it. Dan and Paul go over the definition and symptoms of BDD and the different ways it affects people. We also share issues we've had with body image at different points in our lives and how we can relate to people with BDD and how they feel. We discuss social media's impact on people's mental health and BDD specifically. We also talk about people who appear to be appropriating mental illnesses to gain likes, retweets, and sympathy. We're definitely not professionals and can't diagnose anyone but some of the things we see on social media don't add up. (2:40) Body Dysmorphic Disorder. (8:33) Can we relate to BDD? Unnatural Habitats. Mar 14, 2019
    Show notes

Dan and P reflect on their childhoods and how growing up in the DC area during the peak of the crack epidemic may have contributed to our mental health issues. Both Dan and P were born into poverty and raised in high crime neighborhoods. P grew up in a project house that consisted of 10+ people and he thought everyone had random apartment inspections up until he was a teenager. He shares what it was like growing up as a bi-racial kid in a blended family. After Dan's mother left his abusive father her and Dan ended up living in a homeless shelter for women and children. After getting on a government assistance program Dan's mother and another family from the homeless shelter moved into a roach and rat infested apartment in one of the worst areas of the city. Dan shares his history with dropping out of school, becoming an alcoholic as a teenager, and eventually being sent to the juvenile detention center. (2:07) Introduction. (3:23) Dan's Early Memories. Recklessness. Feb 28, 2019
    Show notes

In episode 9 of A Few Screws Loose Dan and Paul have a discussion about reckless behavior. We quickly go over some of the mental illnesses that are associated with reckless behavior, before landing on Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). BPD consists of numerous symptoms that can easily be misdiagnosed as other mental illnesses. We go over some of the symptoms and how closely we can relate to these symptoms. It's kind of scary how many of these symptoms a "normal" person would be able to identify with, which is why self-diagnosis and online tests are not recommended. We also take a trip down memory lane about strange and reckless things we've done in the past and how moving away from our hometown essentially saved both of our lives. (2:17) Causes of reckless behavior. (4:01) Borderline Personality Disorder (18:25) Sleep Paralysis and F*** That Lady! (29:01) Our experiences throwing caution to the wind. (1:01:35) In Closing. Sexual Abuse Feb 01, 2019
    Show notes

Does being mentally ill absolve you of your actions? This week Dan and Paul talk about sexual abuse, who it affects, and how it affects victims. We discuss sexual predators and the victims that they prey on, sexual predators in the workplace, and how in our community people tend to blame everyone but the actual predator (especially in the case of celebrities). We're definitely not experts in sexual abuse but we do intimately know people who've been victims of these heinous crimes. If you or someone you know is a victim of sexual assault, don't hesitate to call the National Sexual Assault Hotline at 1.800.656.HOPE (4673) or visit RAINN.ORG for more information. Dan shares how he was an alcoholic from the age of 13 until about 18 sharing some drunk stories that we can now look back at with our brand of twisted humor. LGBTQ+ Mental Health (w/ Jayden Hollywood) Jan 01, 2019
    Show notes

Happy 2019 Everyone!!! This week we wanted to talk to Jayden Hollywood (@TheGreatJayden) of the Unapologetik Podcast (@UnapologetikPod) about mental health in the LGBT community. Unfortunately Paul had technical difficulties with his internet that prevented him from being a part of the conversation. Paul and Dan share how they grew up in toxic communities and how minorities are generally more homophobic than other communities. Dan and Jayden chop it up about trauma, suicide, drug use, and the stigmas that still surround the LGBTQ community in 2019. Jayden shares his very personal struggles with coming out to his family and how he's managed to live a balanced, conflict-free life as an adult. He's definitely an inspiration to us all. Feel free to reach out to any of us to continue this conversation. (2:30) Growing up in a toxic environment. (26:35) Podcast Recommendation: The Awakened Soul. (27:19) Mr. Jayden Hollywood. We're Misanthropists, Not Antisocial. Dec 01, 2018
    Show notes

In episode 3 we unpack a lot! Paul explains how people routinely misuse the term antisocial, which is actually a form of sociopathy closely related to psychopathy. We don't necessarily identify as full-blown recluses, but both do share symptoms of mild agoraphobia and identify as misanthropists. We look at how social media has the potential create narcissists, sociopaths, and proper antisocial people. We discuss some of the places we feel comfortable going as well as places we don't feel comfortable or flat out refuse to go. We share our limited daily social interactions and try to explain why we don't go anywhere or interact with people. Afro Becky stops by to explain what Dan looks like in social situations from an observers point of view. Also be sure to hang around for the bonus material at the end!
