Platform tennis, or paddle tennis as it also called, has attracted an estimate 10,000 players in the Chicago area over the past several years. Played primarily by adults outside in cold weather months (October through March), it has been known to cause a variety of injuries, including Achilles and ACL tears, shoulder labral injuries, tennis elbow?and even retinal tears.?Dr. Julia Bruene of Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush treats patients with some of these injuries and?discusses?them with Dr. Brian Cole.?Kashul.?Dr. Bruene and Dr. Cole are?joined by the American Platform Tennis Association’s John Noble.

On any given day, Meg would be out the door before the sun rose, ready to coach for USA Cycling or teach a yoga class. As an endurance athlete and mother to a busy toddler, her health is crucial to her lifestyle.?Though she endured knee pain for several years, a fall off of her mountain bike was the catalyst to a visit with an orthopedic surgeon.
?After my knee scope, it was clear there was a bigger issue,? Meg said. ?I basically had no cartilage left on my knee.?

The use of allografts, or donated human tissue, to heal the human body from trauma and disease goes back more than 100 years. ?The first known case is from 1878 where Dr. Macewen, age 32, had a 3-year-old boy with a bone infection. ?Dr. Macewen removed the boy?s infected humerus shaft, but with no bone regrowth, his limb was useless and his parents requested amputation. ?Instead, Dr. Macewen performed a bone transplant, whereby two-thirds of the humerus shaft was restored. ?Life-enhancing transplants using allografts still take place today, but have progressed through the availability of more sophisticated biologic solutions provided by such companies as AlloSource?.

Knee injuries are back in the news. With recent injuries to high profile players, water cooler chat is shifting from ACL injuries to meniscal injuries. If you want to be the resident sports medicine expert in the office, keep reading for a brief overview of meniscal tears and what they mean for athletes.
When people talk about meniscus injuries, they are typically referring to either the medial or lateral meniscus of the knee. These structures are a special type of cartilage in the knee that serve three very important functions.
3 Functions of the Meniscus
1. The first function is as a shock absorber.
The material that makes up the meniscus is called fibrocartilaginous tissue, which is a lot like a dense rubber. Since the meniscus is located between the femur (thigh bone) and tibia (shin bone), it is in the perfect place to keep the shock from athletic movements from causing damage.
2. The second function of the meniscus is to provide a smooth surface for the femur and tibia to move on.
The rubbery, fibrocartilaginous tissue is smooth and reduces friction between the bones that for the knee joint. This not only makes makes movement fluid, but prevents damage to the bones of the knee.
3. Finally, the meniscus helps provide stability to the knee.
The shape of the meniscus creates a sort of C-shaped cup on each side of the tibia, for the end of the femur to sit in, helping to keep everything where it should be.
Knee meniscal injuries typically happen in one of two ways ? an injury event to the knee or degeneration. An injury during activity usually happens with bending and twisting of the knee, like an awkward squat. Degenerative meniscal injuries happen as we age. Over time, the meniscus loses its rubbery properties and can become easier to tear.
There are a few options to treat a torn meniscus.
1. If the meniscus is torn in an area that has a good blood supply, a surgeon may opt to repair the tear. This will help to maintain the overall health of the knee, but comes with a longer recovery time as the meniscus can be slow to heal.
2. If the tear is in a location with poor blood supply, the chances of a repair being successful are slim. In this case, most surgeons will perform a meniscectomy, which simply means removing the torn portion and smoothing out the remaining meniscus. Although you are losing some of the natural anatomy of your knee, you will regain function and have a shorter recovery time than a repair.
3. If you are less active, some surgeons may opt to try injections,?physical therapy, or a combination of both to help avoid surgery.? This plan can help alleviate the discomfort of a torn meniscus and let one get back to their typical routine.

She is the first woman to ever be granted a University Endowed Chair position at Colorado State University. She is the Director of the Laboratory of Comparative Musculoskeletal Oncology and Traumatology and has been actively involved in limb preservation research, regenerative medicine, tissue engineering and sarcoma research for the last eighteen years.
She has been an invited speaker at various venues for in translational research, both nationally and internationally. Noah spent much of the summer working out in Santa Barbara, California, at P3 The Peak Performance Project, an athletic training facility that, at least in part, is known for helping athletes get back on track after various injuries. Alongside his trusted friend and trainer Alex Perris, Noah spent much of the offseason in Santa Barbara trying to get his body back in order. The difference in his game early in training camp has been noticeable to teammates.

Michael was a middle infielder and pitcher at Normal West High School when they won back-to-back Big 12 conference championships in 2009 and 2010. He earned All-Conference recognition in both 2009 and 2010. He was selected to the Illinois Coaches Association All-Star games in 2010 and was a member of the Big 12 All-Academic team in 2010.?Michael played two years of college baseball at Heartland Community College and made consecutive trips to the NJCAA World Series in Enid, OK in 2011 and 2012. The 2011 team was the first Heartland team to advance to the World Series.
Michael ?MC? Collins was 22 years old.?As a graduate of Illinois State University with a degree in Exercise Science, he was just two days away from coaching first base on opening day of his second season as an assistant coach with his Dad at University High School.
On March 28th Michael enjoyed a formal sorority dance at ISU and an evening out with several friends. They did the right thing, calling a designated driver for a ride home and using their seatbelts. Unfortunately across town, a 37 year old mom, already on probation for her 4th felony, made a much different decision. She got behind the wheel of her 2014 Camaro with a blood alcohol level more than twice the legal limit for driving, and with no regard for human life, hurtled the car down a high-traffic street at speeds exceeding 130 mile per hour leading to a?horrific crash.
In life there are givers and there are takers. Michael was a giver. He signed up to be an organ donor not because his parents or anyone told him to, but because it was simply the right thing to do. He even restored sight to a blind woman in New York. He is our hero.

In our journey to get healthy, the majority of us have probably tried multiple types of exercises in an attempt to find some that not only work, but are sustainable.? Andrea Rosmann?graduated from Northwestern University in 2010 with her Doctorate of Physical Therapy. Michael was a middle infielder and pitcher at Normal West High School when they won back-to-back Big 12 conference championships in 2009 and 2010. He earned All-Conference recognition in both 2009 and 2010. He was selected to the Illinois Coaches Association All-Star games in 2010 and was a member of the Big 12 All-Academic team in 2010.?Michael played two years of college baseball at Heartland Community College and made consecutive trips to the NJCAA World Series in Enid, OK in 2011 and 2012. The 2011 team was the first Heartland team to advance to the World Series.
Michael ?MC? Collins was 22 years old.?As a graduate of Illinois State University with a degree in Exercise Science, he was just two days away from coaching first base on opening day of his second season as an assistant coach with his Dad at University High School.
On March 28th Michael enjoyed a formal sorority dance at ISU and an evening out with several friends. They did the right thing, calling a designated driver for a ride home and using their seatbelts. Unfortunately across town, a 37 year old mom, already on probation for her 4th felony, made a much different decision. She got behind the wheel of her 2014 Camaro with a blood alcohol level more than twice the legal limit for driving, and with no regard for human life, hurtled the car down a high-traffic street at speeds exceeding 130 mile per hour leading to a?horrific crash.
In life there are givers and there are takers. Michael was a giver. He signed up to be an organ donor not because his parents or anyone told him to, but because it was simply the right thing to do. He gave even in his death. His organ and tissue donation through the Gift of Hope have had a positive impact on hundreds of lives. His liver, pancreas and kidneys live on. He even restored sight to a blind woman in New York. He is our hero.

He served his residency and internship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and his fellowship in hand and microvascular surgery at renowned Indiana Hand Center. The Washington?Wizards guard John Wall underwent multiple examinations that revealed five non-displaced fractures in his left wrist and hand.
Wall initially felt as if he had fractured his wrist — which he said he broke in high school — when he came crashing down hard late in the second quarter of Game 1. He remained in the game and said X-rays after the game revealed no breaks. Wall also said he got two opinions on his injury and was told it was just a bad sprain.?His left hand swelled up considerably after Game 1 and he was unable to get the swelling to go down significantly.

Knee injuries are back in the news. With recent injuries to high profile players, water cooler chat is shifting from ACL injuries to meniscal injuries. If you want to be the resident sports medicine expert in the office, keep reading for a brief overview of meniscal tears and what they mean for athletes.
When people talk about meniscus injuries, they are typically referring to either the medial or lateral meniscus of the knee. These structures are a special type of cartilage in the knee that serve three very important functions.
3 Functions of the Meniscus
1. The first function is as a shock absorber.
The material that makes up the meniscus is called fibrocartilaginous tissue, which is a lot like a dense rubber. Since the meniscus is located between the femur (thigh bone) and tibia (shin bone), it is in the perfect place to keep the shock from athletic movements from causing damage.
2. The second function of the meniscus is to provide a smooth surface for the femur and tibia to move on.
The rubbery, fibrocartilaginous tissue is smooth and reduces friction between the bones that for the knee joint. This not only makes makes movement fluid, but prevents damage to the bones of the knee.
3. Finally, the meniscus helps provide stability to the knee.
The shape of the meniscus creates a sort of C-shaped cup on each side of the tibia, for the end of the femur to sit in, helping to keep everything where it should be.
Knee meniscal injuries typically happen in one of two ways ? an injury event to the knee or degeneration. An injury during activity usually happens with bending and twisting of the knee, like an awkward squat. Degenerative meniscal injuries happen as we age. Over time, the meniscus loses its rubbery properties and can become easier to tear.
There are a few options to treat a torn meniscus.
1. If the meniscus is torn in an area that has a good blood supply, a surgeon may opt to repair the tear. This will help to maintain the overall health of the knee, but comes with a longer recovery time as the meniscus can be slow to heal.
2. If the tear is in a location with poor blood supply, the chances of a repair being successful are slim. In this case, most surgeons will perform a meniscectomy, which simply means removing the torn portion and smoothing out the remaining meniscus. Although you are losing some of the natural anatomy of your knee, you will regain function and have a shorter recovery time than a repair.
3. If you are less active, some surgeons may opt to try injections, physical therapy, or a combination of both to help avoid surgery.? This plan can help alleviate the discomfort of a torn meniscus and let one get back to their typical routine.

Sheila Denman,?MA, MS, PT, CEIS,?Senior Vice President of ATI Worksite Solutions talks about how athletic trainers and physical therapists are engaging in the industrial setting;?helping to maintain a healthy workforce and try to prevent injuries before they start with?education, training, early intervention and prevention and improved performance; bridging the gap between management and employees.
Sheila is a graduate of Ball State with an MA in Exercise Physiology and graduate of the University of Indianapolis with an MS in Physical Therapy.?Since 1992, Sheila has specialized in all elements of industrial injury prevention and treatment of Worker?s Compensation clientele. She is responsible for consulting, training and instructional materials design services in ergonomics intended to enhance the systems that make up the work environment.
Primary focus: Ergonomic systems and work processes, injury prevention/intervention management strategies, physical abilities testing, safe worker behavior and return to work. Over the past decade, Sheila has developed and implemented fully integrated ergonomics and injury intervention programs utilized by Indiana and national companies to protect/educate their employees and reduce the cost of Worker?s Compensation by taking ownership of their risk program. Oklahoma City Thunder forward Kevin Durant underwent successful bone graft surgery for the fifth metatarsal of his right foot, Thunder Executive Vice President and General Manager Sam Presti announced.
Dr. Cole and Steve talk about a Jones Fracture and how the bone graft procedure is used to aid in healing.
What is a Fifth Metatarsal Fracture? Fractures (breaks) are common in the fifth metatarsal ? the long bone on the outside of the foot that connects to the little toe.
Diagnosis Anyone who has symptoms of a fifth metatarsal fracture should see a foot and ankle surgeon as soon as possible for proper diagnosis and treatment. To arrive at a diagnosis, the surgeon will ask how the injury occurred or when the pain started. The foot will be examined, with the doctor gently pressing on different areas of the foot to determine where there is pain.?The surgeon will also order x-rays. Because a Jones fracture sometimes does not show up on initial x-rays, additional imaging studies may be needed.
When is Surgery Needed? If the injury involves a displaced bone, multiple breaks, or has failed to adequately heal, surgery may be required. The foot and ankle surgeon will determine the type of procedure that is best suited to the individual patient.
Steve and Dr. Cole talk about the definition, causes and treatment of the hyperextended knee.
What is Hyperextension?
A hyperextended knee injury occurs when the knee extends past a normal range of motion in the straight position. Essentially, the knee bends back on itself. Hyperextension can range from a mild injury, which is sore but heals in two to four weeks, to a severe injury requiring surgery and extensive knee pain medicines.
Immediate Symptoms
You will experience several symptoms right away if you hyperextend your knee and will recognize the need for knee pain help. You might hear or feel a pop, and it might feel as if your knee has been thrown out of line. You will experience pain at the back and sides of your knee, and swelling within the first few hours of the injury. Most significantly, you will be unable to continue playing, running, etc., on your knee. The knee may become unstable, but instability is not always readily noticed because of the swelling. You might be able to walk on it, but it will be painful.
When to Seek Care for a Hyperextended Knee
If you have been injured enough that your knee is swelling, feels unstable or there is impaired motion or pain, you should seek knee pain treatment and be evaluated by your health care provider as soon as possible. Do not try and diagnose or treat knee injuries on your own. The knee is a complex joint and can have many different injuries. Proper treatment of those injuries is imperative for full recovery.

-Aside from the obvious weight gain and heart disease issues, why should we try to eliminate sugar from our diets and how does your 14 day program help?
Not all carbs and sugars are metabolized the same way in the body. Excess sugar consumption causes insulin resistance which causes inflammation in your body. When advising clients, I recommend reducing?all refined sugar, especially high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), from their diet. Try stevia, rapadura, sucanat, maple syrup, organic local honey, molasses, and dates, all of which contain more nutrients and are less processed.
Fructose metabolism within the liver has been shown to generate??harmful compounds and may cause free radical damage, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, insulin resistance and hypertension. Products that contain HFCS are sodas,?breakfast cereals, fruit juice blends, fruit flavored yogurts, salad dressings, breads-even the whole wheat options, candy, nutrition energy bars, meal supplements and agave nectar. Aim for less than 25 grams of HFCS per day to avoid risks for diabetes and obesity.
The fructose in fruit has fiber and does not always correlate to a high glycemic load. Glycemic load defines the quality of the carbohydrate and has a stronger correlation in people with heart disease and diabetes.?Berries have the lowest amount of sugar and fructose and the highest amount of phytonutrients.?I recommend obtaining sugar from natural sources such as fruit because you have the added benefit of fiber to slow absorption.
FYI..?Sugar comes in many varieties and is processed in a variety of ways. From an environmental standpoint, the majority of sugarcane is not organically grown, and many sugar plantations use insecticides, pesticides and crop burning as standard practices which can negatively impact soil, air, water, and the health of the workers.
-How can an elimination diet or the 14 Day?Transformation change how we eat for life?
Often people are unaware if they have a food sensitivity which is very different from a food allergy. Full blown Allergies cause immediate symptoms and are very different. The most common food allergies in people are eggs, wheat, peanuts, soy, milk shellfish and fish.
