【聊了什么 The What】
“Born for the Spotlight” is a Taiwanese drama series that deeply explores female friendships, workplace relationships, and the realities of the entertainment industry. Through the perspectives of actresses at different age stages, the series reflects the changes and challenges of Taiwan's entertainment industry in a meta way.
This isn't just a simple "palace drama," but a workplace drama that closely mirrors reality. The emotional and interpersonal relationship development of several middle-aged and even elderly female characters in the show demonstrates the possibilities for growth at different stages of life. The relationship between Xue Yazhi and Zhou Fan breaks viewers' stereotypes about characters and actresses, and also portrays the coexistence of jealousy and love between women with great subtlety.
We discussed how Taiwanese media from different periods—from Chiung Yao dramas to idol dramas to modern Taiwanese series—have shaped our understanding of love and life. "The Actress," as a new generation of Taiwanese drama, not only tells the story of the entertainment industry but also reflects changing societal expectations of women, becoming a mirror for Taiwan's cultural industry to see itself.

In early 2024, Japanese journalist Shiori Ito released her documentary "Black Box Diaries," which uses intimate cinematography and candid storytelling to chronicle her long journey: from experiencing sexual assault in 2015, to publicly reporting it in 2017, and her subsequent efforts to reform Japan's sexual violence laws in the following years. The documentary is not just a personal record, but also a deep analysis of gender issues in Japanese society - showing the police's perfunctory handling of her case, the media's indifferent response, public stigmatization of victims, and Ito's immense courage in speaking up for herself and other silent survivors.
The episode features discussions between Xiaolan and guests about the complex realities presented in the documentary: how a female journalist must balance professional journalism while being forced to turn her traumatic experience into part of public discourse; why young women are so notably absent from public discussions of gender issues in a democratic society like Japan; and how feminist movements across East Asia navigate breakthroughs within their respective political and cultural contexts. From law enforcement to the judicial system, from traditional media to new media platforms, from individual resistance to collective action - how can we break through the limitations of our time to pursue systemic change?

Sean Baker's latest film "Anora" follows a Brooklyn sex worker who steps into a modern-day Cinderella story, only to find herself enduring the most exhausting few days of her life. In 2024, both we and Anora know full well that the classic "Pretty Woman" narrative is a sexist and tiresome trope. But Baker manages to tell a nuanced, relatable story through Anora. The specificity of it — Southern Brooklyn's landscapes, her immigrant background, and the genuine innocence and naivety of youth — allows this story to warm the heart of even the most cynical among us. In the end, the proverbial pumpkin carriage isn't an invitation to cross class lines, but a journey of self-realization.

“Culinary Class Wars,” Netflix’s latest hit cooking show, masterfully stages a compelling clash between 80 “black spoons” chefs against 20 industry-acknowledged “white spoons”, and offers a fascinating snapshot of Korea’s latest culinary landscape. In this episode, our hosts and our guest Prof. Eileen Chow dived into a conversation about competitive reality TV, food, culture, and identity. How does a cooking show manage to channel a level of intensity that rivals “Squid Games” but sadly without a single squid dish in sight? Why does the Korean perception of authentic Chinese cuisine what we consider old-school glazy Jiangzhe classics? Can the Michelin standards, rooted deeply in the European culinary tradition, truly serve as a universal measure of culinary excellence? Tune in to find out.

Has time been accelerating this year???
Under the conspiracy of time's rapid passage, four of us gathered as usual to record our fall vibes check. By the time we finished editing and about to drop this episode, well, it was already early November…
October, November, and holiday-packed December always feel like the fastest-passing weekend of a week. We look forward to them, yet they also declare the undeniable fact that time flows at an unforgiving speed. Next year's concert schedules are already out, the fashion world has begun announcing trends for spring and summer—these images, messages, numbers, ephemeral headlines, and colors interweaved throughout our social media and emails create a sense of temporal displacement: when is this?
As with all our vibe checks, we kept this episode 100% unscripted, speaking freely of our stream of consciousness. We have been "avoidant" of this election (as we all live in the US), we discussed some books we've read, and as usual, this episode is packed with various random stuff uttered from our mouths.
Happy November, everyone!

“Black Myth: Wukong” is China's first so-called "AAA" blockbuster video game, and CyberPink gals are here to talk about it. We haven't discussed gaming before, as none of our hosts (other than Yifang) are avid gamers, but we couldn't pass up the opportunity to join the discourse around this cross-cultural phenomenon that's the game of the summer (or dare we say, year).
To fully understand the hype around "Black Myth: Wukong," all participants in this episode played the game. Especially Xiaolan who decided to jump right into the Wukong universe, as a new gamer. Along with our two guests who are both gaming industry professionals and passionate gamers, we discuss the psychological journey of female gamers as they engage with the game. Is "Black Myth: Wukong" considered a Soulslike game, and if so, how do Soulslike games allow us to perceive our agency while we're engrossed in the game's narrative?
While many view the commercially successful "Black Myth: Wukong" as a pinnacle of Chinese cultural export in recent years, news about misogynistic comments from the development team surfaced. What does this mean for the persistent misogyny in the gaming industry as a whole? We talk about Gamergate 1.0 and 2.0, what it means to be a woman and a gamer, and the gaming community at large. Tune in for a riveting discussion on "Black Myth: Wukong" and more!

In this episode, we discuss the recently released film "Dìdi" (meaning "little brother" in Chinese). This coming-of-age story explores the growing pains of its 13-year-old protagonist the summer before starting high school in Fremont, California. The film marks the directorial debut of Taiwanese-American filmmaker Sean Wang and draws heavily from his own experience. The narrative centers on Chris, a 13-year-old Taiwanese-American boy, during a transformative two-month summer vacation in 2008. Throughout this brief period, Chris navigates his first love, family conflicts, identity confusion, and discovers his passion for videography and skateboarding. Starting with the film's title "Didi," we share our thoughts on this nostalgic youth drama. The subtle themes of gender and the boy's growth in the early digital age resonate with our own experiences as old millennials. The story's portrayal of gender bias within East Asian families and the protagonist's online coming-of-age journey mirror aspects of our own upbringings.

As a pop culture podcast, we can’t not talk about one of the biggest cultural moments in hip hop (and beyond): the infamous rap battle between Drake and Kendrick Lamar. But for us here at Cyberpink, dissecting this rap beef goes further than just chronologically listing out who dropped what song when, or the cultural significance of “Not Like Us.” When we first experienced racialization as young immigrants, Kendrick’s profound lyrics were part of the canonical texts we read to understand race and identity in the U.S. Kendrick vs. Drake goes beyond two rappers showing off their creative chops -- it started a whole conversation around how we should consume and evaluate hip hop culture. As insults were traded and the battle escalated, accusations of domestic violence and pedophilia became lyrical weapons casually thrown around; no women or child was spared as partners, sons, daughters, and parents got dragged into the mix. Are these unverified accusations meant to protect real women, or are the two rap stars using each other’s fragile ego and fear of losing fame or wealth for their own gain. What are they gaining -- clout or their name in history as the winner? And at what cost -- women who get caught in the crossfire and further extending hip-hop’s inherent misogynistic tendencies? Is this whole showdown an indication that those with resources are indifferent to women's plight? It’s our job as culture consumers to ask these tough questions. Tune in for our discussion.

【聊了什么The What】
"Minor Feelings" is a book by Korean-American poet and writer Cathy Park Hong that explores the fluid identity, emotions, and experiences of Asian Americans through memoir, cultural criticism, and historical review. As an "East Asian daughter" and a "minority writer," Hong keenly perceives a range of everyday feelings of shame, anger, and self-doubt. In the highly racialized society of America, Asians are often cast as the "model minority," with their diligence and success used as tools to uphold the status quo of mainstream society. However, when they experience racial discrimination, this narrative often stifles Asian Americans' expressions. These "minor feelings" that arise from marginalization conflict with the mainstream American narratives about race and, like the Asian American community, are often overlooked or misunderstood in the black-and-white racial discourse.
Recently translated into Chinese and published in China, we took this opportunity to invite our good friend, Duke University professor Eileen Chow, to discuss racial consciousness, the model minority myth, and the impact of historical events on personal and collective identity.
We also shared our own immigration experiences and how these subtle feelings arise in our everyday situations.
