Snooze

Everyone has a dream.

But sometimes there’s a gap between where we are and where we want to be. True, there are some people who can bridge that gap easily, on their own, but all of us need a little help at some point. A little boost. An accountability partner. A Snooze Squad.

In each episode, the Snooze Squad will strategize an action plan for people to face their fears. Guests will transform their own perception of their potential and walk away a few inches closer to who they want to become.

Snooze is a show about things people put off, how they conquer them, but most importantly, how they conquer themselves.

This new podcast from LAist Studios will inspire you to ask yourself what you have been pressing snooze on, and inspire you to become the protagonist of your own life.

Support for this podcast is made possible by Gordon and Dona Crawford, who believe that quality journalism makes Los Angeles a better place to live.

This program is made possible in part by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, a private corporation funded by the American people.

The Imitation of Christ with Fr. Joe Roesch

Jesus said, "Whoever wishes to come after Me, must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow Me" (Matthew 16:24). This is what Christians have been trying to do for centuries: to become like Christ. The old expression was "imitating Christ"; now we say, "following Christ," walking in His footsteps, to become like Him. Join Fr. Joe Roesch, MIC, as he reads the spiritual classic, "The Imitation of Christ," from beginning to end. It was written in the 1400s, yet sounds like it was written yesterday. Translated into languages all over the world, it is said to be the most well-read book in the world next to the Bible. "The Imitation of Christ" was read and beloved by many of the saints, and offers great spiritual advice for every age. Father Roesch is reading the translation by Aloysius Croft and Harold Bolton, available in a PDF download from CatholicPlanet.com. Support our Ministries here. Read More

Mythillogical

Mythillogical is the podcast where two enthusiasts of mythology, history and folklore try and make sense of the wide variety of fantastic tales told by cultures around the world. We discuss why the same idea can show up in the mythology of cultures on opposite sides of the world, what real events can inspire superstition and folklore, how stories can completely change over time, and where possible try to figure out what could have inspired people to dream up dragons, demons, gods and monsters. May contain wild speculation, terrible puns, and if we're lucky, actual facts. Read More

American Viscountess

When I married into the British Aristocracy it was the start of a wonderfully exciting journey, if a little daunting. I became a Viscountess – and for an American girl from a small town outside Chicago, it was quite a shock. I live with my husband, Luke – heir to the Earl of Sandwich- and our family at Mapperton House in Dorset.  Mapperton is a glorious sandstone house house dating originally from the 1540’s. It is known as Britain’s Finest Manor House and is filled with wonderful treasures collected by Luke’s ancestors.  Living in a place like this is a joy and but also a challenge and every day we’re aware that we are preserving a very special part of Britain’s heritage.  Mapperton has opened up an extraordinary new world for me and I can’t wait to share it with you all – so if you love castles and manors and stately homes as much as I do, please join me as I head off to some of the Britains most spectacular historic homes …On these trips, I’ll be meeting other owners who live and manage these large houses and estates as well as some of the fantastic people who work there too. With them I’ll be exploring the history, the landscapes, the innovations of generations past and present.  I’ll be sure to roll up my sleeves and help with a few jobs along the way.So please join this American Viscountess as I journey into the countryside in search of some of Britain’s Finest Historic Houses.

The Plutarch Podcast

Tom Cox from grammaticus.co explores Plutarch’s Parallel Lives to introduce you to antiquity, encourage you in your education, or refresh your perspective on people and politics by stepping outside the news cycle. Biography invigorates the study of history by bringing it to life. Plutarch was the first master of this form, examining in a person the relationship between fortune, virtue, and excellence. Whether you just want to study antiquity from your armchair, sit at the feet of the greatest teachers of the West, or expand your own classical education, Plutarch’s Parallel Lives and the podcast are here to serve. Plutarch wrote almost 50 lives exploring the greatest leaders of the Greek and Roman world before Christ. His lives have been foundational to education for centuries, but they are often wrapped in the obscurity of older translations or bog the reader down with specific political and social terms from Athens or Rome. Let Tom translate the jargon and enliven the journey by outlining and explaining each essay encouraging you to dive in and learn from the teacher himself, or guide your students through his essays. Whether you learn or teach in a classroom or at home, join Plutarch—and Tom—in examining what it means to live well, by considering those who have lived before us. Read More
