What do we love most about our weekly ‘Podfluencer’ feature? It’s the fact that our featured podfluencers come from all walks of life. And this week, we bring you a voice that many morning New York City commuters will recognize. It’s none other than Wayne Cabot, the ‘longest-tenured anchor’ at the iconic news radio station, 880 WCBS-AM, in New York City.
And he’s teamed up with a vibrant co-host from the other end of the Radio spectrum, Patty Steele, who is a part of the powerful WCBS-FM radio show, Scott Shannon in the Morning.
Together, they’ve launched “News on the Rocks”, a creative & entertaining take on relevant news…the kind of compelling conversations you’d have with your friends over cocktails…and yes, maybe even shots!
Who Is Wayne Cabot?
Wayne is a ‘Jersey guy’, who’s been an avid listener of ‘news radio’ since the age of 13. But his big break came on his 18th birthday, where he served a short stint at WPST and then quickly transitioned to an AM station in Princeton, WHWH.
Rather than go through his impressive & extensive ‘radio bio’, which you can read here, let’s look at his 17 year run at WCBS-AM. His bio at CBS New York.com states:
Auditioning for a job at the venerable KYW — and told there were no openings — Wayne turned on his way out the door and groveled to the manager that he’d be willing to travel to New York if there were openings at the Westinghouse station there. The manager smiled and said he’d pass that along. Wayne got a message three days later to call Steve Swenson at 1010 WINS. Today Swenson is in charge of all the CBS stations in DC, and that manager from Philly, Scott Herman, is in charge of CBS stations in New York and across the country.
After a year at WINS and decades at WCBS, Wayne is genuinely humbled to work among the industry’s best, both on the air and behind the scenes. Wayne is most proud of his involvement and the company’s generous support of such community giants as WHY Hunger, Special Olympics New Jersey, the Matheny Medical and Educational Center, and countless other charities. And he is grateful to WCBS News Director
Tim Scheld for embracing the heart and spirit that makes WCBS part of the local community fabric. To that end, the fact that Tim and Wayne are fellow Deadheads is no surprise.
After anchoring PM drive for 17 years, Wayne got the call to mornings, 5-10 am, and traded his martini shaker for an alarm clock.

The Interview
Who has had the biggest influence on your podcasting career and why?
Actually it’s someone who does not do a podcast. Howard Stern has been a radio companion since his first day on WNBC, which was my first day of college: August 28, 1982. He knows how to keep it real, keep it moving, and never be boring.
If there’s someone, past or present, that you’d love to have an opportunity to go to dinner with, who would that be and why?
Abraham Lincoln. Is there a better American?
What is it, about your audience, that continues to surprise you?
That they actually keep coming back for more of our alcohol-infused banter. Patty and I have fun entertaining each other every week, and I guess it resonates
In one word, how would your best friends describe you? Why do you think that is?
Tall. I’m 6’7” – oh, you mean personality? Well I know I can be a snarky dick, but I’m working on it.
If you had one day, completely free, away from work, no watch on, and could do whatever the hell you wanted, what would it be and why?
I would host a massive, high-school era keg party around the pool and invite everyone who’s cool, or who I’m guilted into.
Editorial Note: We will be featuring his co-host, Patty Steele, in the future…as a PODFLUENCER too! Stay tuned!
