    Zero Disturbance

Listen to the conversations therapists and clients should be having — but often aren’t.

Zero Disturbance is a podcast about what makes therapy truly work.

For therapists, we explore clinical reasoning, case conceptualization, EMDR, and intensive therapy design — so you can think more clearly and work more efficiently.

For clients, we pull back the curtain on the therapy process — helping you understand what effective treatment looks like, what good collaboration feels like, and how to participate actively in your own healing.

Because therapy works best when both people in the room understand the map.

    Inside each episode, you’ll hear:
    • How strong clinical thinking shapes outcomes
    • Why therapy sometimes stalls — and how to fix it
    • How intensives and brain-based therapy (EMDR, Brainspotting) can accelerate progress
    • What client-therapist collaboration should actually look like

Ep 56: Rewriting and Replacing Adaptations [Rebranding Trauma Therapy Series] Aug 01, 2023
    Show notes

Adaptations are all things we created in response to something we learned in life, often during a traumatic experience. Whether that experience happened in childhood or as adults, we learned how to cope and feel safe. And those adaptations perform a positive function, whether they’re healthy or not.

The important thing to remember is that adaptations can and should change over time, especially if they’ve become problematic, like disordered eating, alcohol abuse, compulsive shopping, gambling addictions, and self-harm, among other things.

You have the power to make these changes and to become the master of your own destiny.

In this week’s video, I’m showing you how to approach them with compassion, understanding, and an eagerness to grow beyond them. By embracing productive, safe conversations and powerful modalities like EMDR, Brainspotting, or Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART), you'll unlock the keys to transformation.

Adaptations from our childhood were written by kids whose brains weren’t fully developed yet. So it makes sense that we can approach this with a sense of understanding and compassion rather than judgment.

Let’s notice the consequences of our adaptations and get creative about how we can replace them with something that serves you today.

The first step is EMDR, Brainspotting, or Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) and a place where you can have productive, safe conversations about what’s happening inside the choices we’ve made.

Listen in and be sure to watch the whole series on rebranding trauma therapy.

When something traumatic happens to us, it can be healing to have a therapist listen to and/or validate our horrible experience, especially if no one else has before. However, rehashing details of traumatic events can be retraumatizing. Brain-based therapies like EMDR teach us that we don't have to talk about the trauma or the details if we don't want because the real healing doesn't focus on the traumatic event itself.

Ep 55: We’re Always Ready for Trauma Therapy [Rebranding Trauma Therapy Series] Jul 29, 2023
    Show notes

While every therapist has their own methods and systems for working with clients, one of the most harmful things they can say to a client is, “You’re not ready for trauma therapy.” Especially when there’s no explanation or plan for getting the client “ready.”

Every client is ready for trauma therapy because, if you’re following along with this series, we’re rebranding the practice itself.

The role of therapists is to support clients in identifying their adaptations to trauma and learning or relearning skills to allow them to move forward. To do this, clients need the right team, the right tools, and the right skills.

In this week’s video, I’m sharing what clients need for success and a framework for therapists as they support their clients in EMDR and brain-based modality therapy. It’s vital that every client has access to the therapy they need and that no one is ever turned away from services.

This is part three in a series about rebranding trauma therapy. You can watch or listen to the whole series here.

Ep 54: Refocusing Trauma Therapy [Rebranding Trauma Therapy Series] Jul 26, 2023
    Show notes

Talking about details of trauma doesn’t feel good for the therapy client, which is why it’s so important that we create a reframe not only around therapy in general, but especially in brain-based modalities like Brainspotting and EMDR in particular.

Not convinced that we should stop talking about “trauma therapy”? This week, I’m sharing three truths around why in an effort to convince you of another perspective.

Therapists are taught to think and work in black and white, that therapy is done in a very specific way with the same benchmarks for clients along the way. But life and interacting with humans doesn’t work that way. There are often extenuating circumstances, like COVID in 2020, that impact us all and don’t give people the opportunity to feel safe in any environment.

This is why therapists need to focus on the adaptations possible during the therapeutic process.

In this week’s video, I’m sharing why we need to look for a Plan B, what scary movies can teach us about trauma responses, and how planning a vacation illustrates the expansive possibilities around safety and adaptations.

This is part two in a series about rebranding trauma therapy. You can watch or listen to the whole series here.

Ep 53: Trauma Therapy’s Branding Crisis [Rebranding Trauma Therapy Series] Jul 25, 2023
    Show notes

Would you rather watch the episode? Head over to our YouTube channel and be sure to subscribe.

After a hiatus from the podcast, I’m back. I’m listening to my heart and what I truly believe others need so that therapy can positively impact as many people as possible. So I’m here, talking to those who are curious about how to make their therapeutic experience smarter and more customized for them. Everyone should get out of therapy exactly what they need.

And that means I’m still talking to therapists too, because I believe there’s a different language we need to use when talking about any kind of therapy. Language that opens doors instead of limits clients in what they’re working on. I’ll still talk a lot about EMDR because that’s what I specialize in, but I’ll also address other types of therapy and how to make it more accessible to clients.

To start, let's talk about the way we talk about trauma therapy. It matters, especially for the person seeking therapy. If we focus solely on trauma, therapists limit their potential to support their clients because “trauma therapy” doesn’t sound very inviting to most people. Instead, we should focus therapy on exploring the decisions and adaptations people have made as a result of their difficult experiences, their trauma. This broader approach invites empowerment and a more fulfilling therapeutic journey.

It’s so important that we change the way we think and talk about therapy because methods like EMDR can impact so much more than trauma responses themselves. We're talking about changing the way we learn. By diving into the adaptations we've developed to cope with the past, we can reshape our responses and create positive changes. EMDR isn't just about acquiring knowledge; it transforms how our brain and body learn and respond.

So, let's rethink trauma therapy together. By embracing the empowering potential of EMDR, therapists empower clients to actively participate in their healing. It's about going beyond trauma, focusing on personal growth, adaptive responses, and creating a life that truly reflects our values and aspirations.

Keep listening because I have so much more to share on this topic.

When something traumatic happens to us, it can be healing to have a therapist listen to and/or validate our horrible experience, especially if no one else has before. However, rehashing the details of that traumatic event can be retraumatizing. Brain-based therapies like EMDR teach us that we don't have to talk about the trauma or the details if we don't want because the real healing doesn't focus on the traumatic event itself.

Ep 52: Understanding Attachment with Dr. Mara Tesler-Stein Jul 28, 2022
    Show notes

In our field, we hear and use the word attachment so often. And, in the community of trauma-informed clinicians, I'd always felt like we had a deep understanding of what this word means.

But when I sat down with Dr. Mara Tesler-Stein for the second time on The Zero Disturbance Podcast, we got to unpack the lack of understanding that lies within this concept for our clients... and possibly even for the folks in our clinical communities.

A lot of research in the perinatal field suggests that we jump to a "disturbed attachment" diagnosis with our NICU babies. However, Mara helps redirect us to what she sees as the real key to fostering secure attachment for parents and children.

And the answer is not so reliant on the NICU experience that the research suggests. In fact, it's actually quite simple.

If parents of NICU babies are able to respond with attunement, responsiveness, and sensitivity, then secure attachment will find its way. And yes, that means that parents need to put in their own work, spending time reflecting on their own attachment behaviors and styles, but when that work is navigated, they're able to give their babies the secure attachment they so lovingly want to offer.

And that's the magic in the trauma-informed therapy we offer our adult clients.

This interview was a powerful reminder of how the narratives we create about parents or kids are sometimes an interpretation (or misinterpretation) of behaviors and urges. As we explored attachment and parenting throughout the lifespan, even touching on complex diagnoses such as neurodivergence, the vulnerable child, and RAD, Mara brought me "back to home base" in the NICU.

Join us as we learn how to trust and listen to parents, help them create healthy narratives, and teach them what secure attachment actually looks like!

You won't want to miss the clinical gold nuggets sprinkled throughout a beautiful conversation about the capacity to bond, attach, attune, and heal.

Ep 51: Transformed with Wendy Jones Jul 25, 2022
    Show notes

Supporting families, even under the best circumstances, can be challenging. So what happens when we need to support families when the world is not set up for their kids to succeed... or even survive?

I had the opportunity to sit down with author Wendy Jones to discuss what it means to show up not only as a therapist for our young, trans clients but also what it means to show up for their parents.

Not unlike any other new or different experience, folks benefit from getting support from those who have a similar thing happening in their life. And that's exactly what Wendy has set out to do with her new book, Transformed.

In our conversation, we dive into our shared experience as moms to trans kids. We share stories about what our kids said and did that helped guide us in understanding their truth. For us, it looked similar; for other parents to gender non-conforming kids, it can look different. But one thing remains true; the value in following our kids' lead, in each singular moment, as they show up in front of us.

And, for a therapist, or any other adult in a trans kid's life, it's the same strategy.

Did you know that 41% of gender non-conforming individuals will attempt to take their own lives? That's 10 times higher than their cis-counterparts. And, trust me, I know that's a harrowing statistic, but there is good news.

Wendy helps us understand the power we hold as therapists and how gender affirming adults are a key piece in the preservation of young, trans lives. Studies show that with at least one supportive adult, suicide rates decrease.

    How powerful is that?

With research like this growing rapidly, it's clear that it's time for clinicians to get trained in how to offer gender-affirming care for trans and gender non-conforming clients.

Y'all, Wendy and I get vulnerable in our conversation. We talk about how we tried, and sometimes failed, at finding resources, how we grieved the loss of the futures we had visualized for our kids, and how we navigated losing friends and family members who just couldn't get on board.

I'm feeling empowered to share this with you and my hope is that you'll listen, learn and grow with us.

Gender non-conforming kids are a gift to the world and if as therapists, parents, and adults we can begin to educate ourselves on how to affirm their identities, we're one step closer to understanding the beauty that lies within their lived experience.

Listen to our podcast episode today because, if you haven't already seen a trans client, it's going to happen sooner than you realize. And being prepared is going to be the difference in saving someone's life.

Learn more about today’s spotlight guest:

As a gender therapist and mom to a transgender child, Wendy felt there was a strong need in the world to support parents of trans kids.

She knew that her own journey was challenging at first, and finding support wasn't always an easy thing. As she had been working with transgender people and their parents over the past five years, Wendy came to find that the parents were oftentimes scared and felt alone in the process of accepting their child's gender identity.

Due to the time constraints of therapy, she wanted to find a way to reach more parents with her own hard-earned strength and wisdom. Writing seemed to be just the right medium to accomplish this goal. Books were one of the main ways that her family got the necessary knowledge to start their gender journey eight years ago. However, there weren't many books out there that offered both lived/personal and clinical experiences.

Wendy hopes that her book can reach parents around the world that are in need of education, support, and encouragement. Her overreaching goal is to help trans kids by helping their parents and to be a strong positive force in today's gender revolution.

    Get Wendy's book here.

Ep 50: Shared Decision Making in Trauma-informed Therapy Jul 19, 2022
    Show notes

Anyone else feeling irritated by how clinicians love to tell each other what is right or wrong? Ever notice how scripts often don’t thoroughly address client preferences or the process of client engagement? Where is the role of autonomy for the client?

To remedy our irritation, today we zoom out and get curious about how we make clinical choices, and how we engage with our clients about making those clinical choices.

For EMDR clinicians, this can be tricky. Questions may already be coming up for you like: How do we make a shared decision with our clients when we have a protocol, step-by-step process, and/or script that we are to follow to do it right and be effective?

Herein lies the balancing act between positive health outcomes and patient autonomy. How and when do we make clinical choices with our clients? How do we follow the script or protocol, and stay client-centered? What’s important to the client? How do we triage what is clinically relevant? The questions are important, and the answers feel challenging.

Good news: physicians have been researching this for decades. And it’s time for us to catch up with the rest of the healthcare literature. Today, as we talk about shared decision making, we realize that we cannot say we are trauma-informed if we are not client-centered. I said what I said.

You deserve to have richer conversations with your clients, in consultation, and even in Facebook groups. As we dive into models of shared decision making, get clarity on which shared decision making model you’re using when you make clinical choices. By identifying your orientation along the shared decision making spectrum, you'll get to have more productive conversations with your colleagues and clients.

And you can finally understand how to make EMDR a client-centered therapy. Perhaps you were also clinically trained in a paternalistic model of shared decision making. I was, and boy did it mess me up. The paternalistic model tells us the rules about EMDR, like talking during Phase 4, what target to start from, and what form of BLS to use.

Let’s get curious about how to translate the gold of EMDR into the deliberative model of shared decision making so we can serve more clients effectively. What does EMDR in the deliberative model look like? Listen in to find out!

    Show notes

I had the opportunity to sit down with not one but two folks in the trauma-informed therapy and coaching communities. And not only was our conversation aligned around our similar value systems, it was yet another example of how innovative thinking offers clinicians the chance to go beyond the traditional images of what we see as therapy.

George Tabb and Noshima Darden-Tabb are a dynamic, married duo who run their own EMDR and Brainspotting private practice and coaching business. They help us understand what it means to work in your zone of genius when it comes to partnership in business, how to identify and use different clinical modalities, and what it takes to be a transformational clinician and trainer.

I was amazed to learn about what these folks have offered their communities and how their business is thriving because of it.

Take some time to listen to George and Noshima as they share anecdotes about their partnership in life, in their business, and their role in their community.

    Ep 48: EMDRIA's Innovation Journey Jul 12, 2022
    Show notes

Whether we like it or not, the past two years have challenged us to design more innovative ways to run our practices and deliver mental health services. Perhaps you've been curious how EMDRIA has had to roll with the punches, too.

I got to sit down with former EMDRIA President, current EMDRIA Board Member, and EMDR Trainer, Carol Miles, to get the inside scoop.

Listen as Carol shares insight about EMDRIA's standardization process for virtual trainings since the start of the pandemic, details about how The Council of Scholars impacts the curriculum used for EMDRIA basic trainings, and EMDRIA's articulation of community values in response to cultural and social climates.

Following in the likeness of Francine Shapiro, EMDRIA strives to be a place where innovation is welcomed, not only in the name of research, but also in the name of serving the populations that need psychotherapy the most.

If we want to keep serving our clients, our community, and ourselves, we need to be building practices that function based on what's happening now, not what was happening then.

You won't want to miss our latest podcast episode to get the inside scoop on EMDRIA's journey with innovation.

Ep 47: Dissociation is a Superpower: Reducing Stigma with Dr. Jamie Marich Jul 05, 2022
    Show notes

I sat down with the one and only Dr. Jamie Marich and had the opportunity to hear from a clinician whose transparency about their own identity is the very thing that makes them a great trainer, therapist, and overall human being.

In our conversation, we talk about how the messaging and training many therapists receive about dissociation creates an unfounded fear and misunderstanding about clients with dissociative minds.

Jamie's ability to take a critical look at the therapy community's fears while sharing her own lived experience as a person with a dissociative mind, is the key in helping us understand that our community is better off with a modified approach to dissociation.

We examine the value of disclosure and advocacy as an effort to decrease the stigma around this identity so that therapists may actually serve their dissociative clients.

It's time that the trauma-informed community understand the identities of the folks who seek out our help in a way that goes beyond protocol. And our hope is that instead of seeing the dissociative mind as something to be feared, we'll all begin to see it as a super power instead.
